Wowwsers. Talk about going back in time. Born 1976 here, Wainuiomata Lower hutt, Olly olsen was who I ran home to watch after school, play school I also remember. Was an awesome time growing up back then. Cars were cars and people actually spoke to each other. Mail had not gone e-mail then, so letters in the post were the norm. Rubbish men runners, milk men, pocket money was 50 cents, so imagine having a dollar note or a 2 dollar note back then fuuuuuuuuuuu lol best days man. Now it's like this: 🙄🤦♂️

Great lineup! Not a series, but who else remembers The Monster's Christmas (1981)? For years I had fragments and images stuck in my memory but no idea what it was. I finally stumbled upon it quite by accident on the NZ On Screen site, where you can watch the whole thing.

Great channel, just wondering if there was a school holiday movie daily on tv 2 during the 80s? Pretty sure there was, if so I was wondering if there’s a library or scans of tv guides that had a list of those films?

Children's TV in this country really went down the gurgler from the 1990's onwards. It finally died in this country at the end of 1995, when Jason Gunn's show was cancelled. A lot of this was the broadcasting reforms, with TVNZ required to be fully commercial, and NZ On Air funding NZ content. We wouldnt get all these unique NZ shows under the current system.

the goodnight kiwi ending on tv back in the day sparked a bit of a debate as to how did the cat push the button on the elevator to make it go up and the other thing was that the cat sometimes laid down or was sitting upright

I can remember a show called The Mad Dog Gang (written by Ian Mune I think), but that might have been late 1970s. Used to love watching W3 and It's Academic. Was also a fan of Super Sale (hosted by Bob Parker), Mastermind and University Challenge. Enjoy quiz shows to this day. In its later years, It's Academic was hosted by John Hayden (who occasionally read the news). Lockwood Smith went on to a political career with the National Party. He was also Speaker of the House under the last National Government. (He's now retired.) I can't remember that Sea Urchins show at all. It would have been right up my alley too. Was it it on TV2? I tended to watch TV1 more. I can remember watching things like CHiPs, Chopper Squad and The Famous Five in the early '80s, and I think they were all on One. Wonder if Sea Urchins was on at the same time as The Famous Five? It looks like the sort of show that would have screened at around 4 or 5 in the afternoon, which was the time slot for The Famous Five. From the mid-80s though, I do remember Terry and the Gunrunners, The Kids from O.W.L. and After School. Some scenes from Terry and the Gunrunners were filmed at Musick Point in Auckland, which I recognised because I'd been there a few months earlier while on holiday with my parents. The scenes with Rob Muldoon were filmed in the Musick Memorial Radio Station building there (or at least, it was used for external shots).

I’d forgotten all about Kids From OWL! I also always thought it was Chit Chat, not Chic Chat. Surprised it only ran for 3 years, I remember it quite well. We were spoiled for what were dubbed “kidult” shows in the ‘80s, it’s a shame we don’t seem to have anything like that anymore.

Hi, hoping you or others on your channel can help me. There was a New Zealand or Australian childrens show on in the uk in the mornings sometime between 1987-1990 and i loved it but cannot find it and can’t remember the name. A bit like The Henderson Kids but what i can remember is that it was a group of young kids being looked after during the day by a young teenage girl l, set in a coastal area, and they would stumble across people upto no good etc. not much to go on but i do remember the brunette older girl with a slightly chubby face standing in the doorway of a house with a white door in the opening credits (at least thats what I remember from 30+ years ago). Hoping that someone here will recognise the show from that vague description! Any help would be very much appreciated.

Love that last bit with the Kiwi bird and the pussy cat telling everyone to switch off the teev and call it a night. I moved to NZ in 1992 when that still existed, and coming from the USA it was like stepping back in time about 30 years to a more innocent era. If you wanted to stay up later and watch anything you used a VCR with pre-recorded or rented movies, and there was only crappy slow dial-up internet with limited content. NZ only had three TV channels back then, and the 3rd one had only recently arrived and you had to install a special antenna on your house to receive it. That was in central Auckland, but if you lived out in the sticks, which was anywhere else except Wellington or Christchurch, hmmm... that's why God invented sheep. ;-)
