Some Dark Shadows (original series) fans were furious at this film, thinking it was nothing but a parody. I grew up watching the original show and was a hooked, massive fan. I never missed an episode, bought the paperbacks, the comic books, etc. I watched the '91 prime-time revival (but wasn't impressed with it, although I appreciated it more later). I loved this movie - it paid great homage to the original soap opera.

Agreed, I thought it paid homage too the original. And threw in some humor too boot. I was 9 or 10 years old when the series first aired. Barnabas scared the crap out of me. But I kept watching it when my parents asked, "If it scares you why watch it?" I replied, "Idk, because it's there." lol. Eventually, I could identify with Barnabas. He was looking for acceptance, because he was different. And I was something of a nerd back then. lol

Burton and Depp did look into using Seaview Terrace (the Carey Mansion), the house used for the exteriors of Collinwood in Newport, RI for the original show, as well as Newport for the town of Collinsport, but because of getting around limitations, it was cost-prohibitive. It was cheaper just to build all the sets in England.
