Guide To Mahabalipuram. This is one of the oldest places in India. The UNESCO monuments at Mahabalipuram are as old as the 7th Century built by the Pallava rulers. The monolithic structures, hidden mysteries, ancient temples and pristine beaches makes this place a must visit!
With over 30,000 ancient temples situated here, Tamil Nadu is called the Land of Temples. Marco Polo, the famous Venetian explorer said that Mahabalipuram is home to 7 Pagodas of which 6 are submerged in the sea. But the majestic Shore Temple is the only one that has gone down in history! It even withstood the series of treacherous tsunamis, leaving as it as the seventh Pagoda standing tall. Overlooking the Bay of Bengal this temple has now been crowned as a popular UNESCO World Heritage Site. The structural temple was built at the time of Pallava dynasty and it is one of the oldest rock-cut temples and shrines of the world.It is an hour away from Chennai and is also known as Mamallapuram or Mahabs by the locals.
