Can you please describe exactly what kind of pads and mark what you used for? I work too with granite but i have problems whit the factory shine polish. So i will apreciate if you du a video with the brand of those pads.especialy for the Black.

Great video, 1 tip I can offer is to just spin the disk before applying it to the stone in case there is a bit of grit on it. This way it will fly off and not do away with all the hard effort.

Watching this actually gives me hope that I can fix our granite. We went with Antique Labrador which is similar in darkness to this piece you are repairing. We have softened water and the areas most concerned of is around kitchen sink. Even though we wipe it down I feel there is always soft water residue to dry and seems to be harsh for any surface and has become so dull that it almost lost all of its shine. I hope it is fixable and that it doesn't just crumble. We have never used a sealer but I was never convinced that sealer actually does anything considering that I just don't believe that sealer would even hold up after wiping a surface down after every use. Anyways, I don't recall you mentioning a sealant. If I am able to restore this like new, especially these extremely affected areas, I just might begin using a sealer

Yes - if you check out our newer unboxing and top polish videos featuring our new kit you will see a white and red china marker are included as well as the presto white out pen. It's a mater of personal preference. BUT....test it on a sample of the stone first to make sure it doesn't stain before working on a customer counter.

I had a dull area on my new counter and I had the granite company come "fix" it. However, it ended up being hazy and cloudy after he was done and didn't match the rest of the counter when natural light reflected it. Does this mean he didnt take all steps you did in bringing the area back to match the rest of the color shine? I am skeptical to have him come fix it again as I don't want it to be worse. I can send a picture if I am able too for advice.

There can be several reasons for not achieving a full polish. Plus, every stone is different and reacts uniquely to different techniques and products. Blacks can be very hard to deal with. If you email me at [e-mail] I can tell you who I would ask before proceeding further.

I found out the hard way that Scotch-Brite pads actually scratch granite. They dulled the surface where I scrubbed (though it seems you can scrub gently without damage). I'd love to restore the finish but I don't have an angle grinder, which is odd since I have every tool imaginable. It would be nice if I could polish it though.

The good news - it can probably be repaired. It's much easier to repair true natural granite compared to man-made stone like quartz. I would recommend a trained refurbishment professional. Contact us at [e-mail] and we may be able to point you in the right direction.

I like to use turbo pads to start off my edge polishing.. should I get rigid or floating turbos for edge polishing I plan on gettin the sl3 adaptor and all the backers.. just deciding wether to go with floating or rigid

Hi Roger, Sounds great! Let us know which distributor you end up getting our products through. ([e-mail]) For edge polishing we definitely recommend starting with the floating pads. We recommend getting a 3” Center Hub Hook & Loop (AKA VELCRO) Backer for each floating turbo you use on a project. We do hear of fabricators that tear off the floating pads directly from the backer but over time Hook & loop wears out. Plus it’s much faster and more accurate twisting the backers on and off the adapter. The floating pads are a bit more forgiving and designed to "float" so that you don't gouge the surface of your material accidentally. You mentioned getting all of our backers, are you also considering the foam backers? You might also want to look into our new Redeemer Resin Pads (currently in the 1,000, 2,000 & 3,000 Grit) that we just released with our new kit. They fit perfectly on the “4” Hook & Loop Backer” & “True 4” Hook & Loop Backer” depending on if you are doing corners or angles. I just got granite tops, darker colors, brown/black. the installers wiped a sealer on them with a cloth and never buffed off. now they are hazy especially when viewed on an angle. some articles say not to seal darker colors, others say to seal all colors. any suggestions?

Yes it would be easier because you don't have to remove as much stone to eliminate the scratch. I don't know much about car polish but I doubt it will cut stone. Do these products and process work the same on quartz and marble?

A similar process will work on marble but you need a different polishing paste at the end. Quartz (engineered stone) is a completely different animal and there are people and companies that specialize in quartz repair and quarts repair products.

I have uba tuba. Got scratched so I used pads 50 up to 3000 grit then mb20 with synthetic hogs hair. It's not nearly as mirror gloss as the factory finish...slightly milky. Do I need to resin epoxy? If so, what product? Thank you!

I need a sander/polisher tool that isn't so long, because I need to repair and polish the inside of a basalt [more dense than granite] kitchen sink. The tool you use in the demo is approx 18" long. I need one that is closer to only 12" long (or even an orbital or pillar type) -- but one that can still use the pads and SL3 attachment. Any suggestions?

Your video definitely helped me. My basalt stone kitchen sink was cut by the quarry with the wrong size drain hole (bathroom size instead of kitchen-sized for strainers). I've done some sculpting, but never cut a 3.5" hole through 2.5" of basalt [more dense than granite]. Plus, I had to cut a shallow rim at a 4" diameter circle around the 3.5" hole [in which the strainer's rim would rest]. After all that, I needed to sand and polish the results and the sink basin out from the cut hole. Your technique helped me do that successfully. Thank you.

You put a lot of torque on that machine at the higher grits is that for creating more friction to get a polish on the stone and get out fine scratches?

With the the resin pads used in this demo the friction creates heat which helps the final shine "pop" out. It's called a "wet-to-dry" technique and works well with the resin pads shown.

Thanks for awesome video and instructions! I have a black countertop, which looks exactly like this one in your video. Not sure what material it is, but I think it's granite. I followed the steps with variable speed Porter Cable orbital sander and diamond wet polishing pads from Amazon (they had good reviews). I used 50, 100, 400, 800, 1200, 3000 grits and finished with hogs hair pad and mb20. Unfortunately the surface still looks grayish dull. It looks glossy/shiny only when wet. I also tried to redo a small area all over again with 50 - 3000 grit pads and spent extra time with 1200 and 3000 grit applying even more water. Then, polished with hogs hair+mb20. The stone got looking better when dry, but still far from how it should look. I don't know what to do and I feel like I ruined the stone.

Vlad, I've heard about using an orbital sander but have never tried it and I don't have any experience with the Amazon kits. We have tried many different diamond polishing pads and they are definitely not created equal. That is why we give specific recommendations in our videos and manufacture/assemble our own products and kits. Our experience is mostly with natural stone and some black stones can be very, very tricky. You need to identify the material, if it is a natural stone it can probably be fixed but I would contact a professional in your area. Find one that comes highly recommended for repair and refurbishment. I don't know where you are located but I know really good people in the Phoenix, AZ area and Palm Spring, CA that specialize in repair. You can email me at [e-mail]

I know this is an old comment but it may be of some help, to someone, somewhere, some day! Now, let it be said, there's a very good reason that stonemasonry is a skilled trade though beware, because it's a trade with many disciplines, so two people with equal time in the industry, may have two completely different skill sets. As for the OP's lack of shine problem, if it's definitely a black granite, take galaxy for an example, then it may be that the stone isn't getting any heat into it at the end of the pad cycle from #400 onwards. I know that sounds counterintuitive to the process and I won't lie, in some cases it absolutely is! It's quite difficult to succinctly describe the process, the reasoning behind it and the selection of tools used but that's where experience shines...no pun intended! A brand new #600 diamond pad will perform differently to a well used one as the stone flashes from wet to dry. By all means, have a crack at DIY should you choose but beware, more often than not, you're more likely to make thing's worse than better. You win some, you loose some, and sometimes the fix is more expensive than starting fresh. Call the experts. Now, there's a time and place where I'd strongly suggest that you proceed cautiously with anyone that promises the world and guarantees a factory finish when they give the diagnosis. Problem is, there's every possibility that it's true in some cases. When you know, you know, but when you know, you're generally not the one looking for someone else to do the job, and there lies the problem. Too many people talk shit in all walks of life and it leaves a wake of disappointment. Be realistic with your expectations and do your best to judge who's being honest in regards with their price. If you have two quotes of the same or similar price, don't be swayed against the guy/girl who takes the time to explain the situation, what's required and why it may not be perfect but it'll definitely be an improvement, over the one who's in the door and back out with a quote in your hand, all before you had time to take a breath. I can guarantee you that I can take a marble island bench top with 30 years of wear and tear and have it like 'factory new' at the end of the day, no scratches or etches, stains totally removed where possible or at worse drastically reduced, edge work chip free, high gloss polished finish and sealed. The guy who says the same but it's only an hour's work, has a radically different idea of the description 'factory new'. A chemical clean and quick marble polish powder finish is far removed from taking the top all the way back to a #50 pad and going from there.

Oh, I forgot to add.....ALWAYS USE A VARIABLE SPEED POLISHER. An orbital sander will no doubt do something. That something isn't anything that's appealing to the eye and installed as a centrepiece anywhere in the world though.

Hi jo jo, We highly recommend getting a nice hardwood cutting board at least the size of your largest knife. Not only will it keep your knifes sharper longer it will protect your counter top. Regarding the repair of your stone counter. The tools and techniques used in this video are intended for a professional to repair granite or natural stone. Similar techniques can be used for man made surfaces but I would suggest reaching out to a local professional or James Lang at Quartz Renew has some great videos. You could do this on a floor, but if you need to cover a large surface it would be much more efficient to have a floor polishing machine. It works the same way but with polishing pads covering a larger surface and it can be weighted to provide its own pressure.

What model of Makita grinder are you using?

The Polisher used in the video is a Makita 9227C. It is variable speed 600 - 3000 rpm. This is an older model but still available to buy.

@@dimafanas, We've never used that polisher with our SL3® Quick Change system and soon to be released "NSI Polish Kit" but after looking up the Milwaukee specs believe it should work. the 2738-20 has a variable RPM load and a 5/8" x 11" thread, which is really all you'd need for our system. Because it is battery powered you might have to swap out batteries more frequent than normal. Best of luck!

You are not using enough water. The pads you are using is capable of extremely deep gloss and reflection. But you are using so little water that your pads are almost dry buffing the surface. If you flood the entire granite with water, there will be more cushion for the pads to operate. Many people use very little water to avoid splashes, but you will never get good results. If you want to know how much water to use, just know that the professional masonry shops use a special type of rotary polisher that has a hose built into the unit to continuously provide water to the polishing pads. This allows the mason to work the pads at a much higher speed while achieving a much more refined finish. It is messy, but you get the job done a lot quicker and a lot nicer. This video is demonstrating a technique called "wet-to-dry" which works very well on granite, with the exact Alpha polishing pads shown. This technique can be used to accomplished repairs in your kitchen with relatively little mess. We have another video where we demonstrate the technique you are describing (kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHPRoHyJZ9Crba8&feature=emb_logo). In this second video we use a center water feed pneumatic polisher with full water and full RPM in our shop. The Redeemer resin pads used are completely different than those utilized in the first video and are part of our new Top Polishing Kit. Remember, every stone is different, every polishing pad is different and different techniques are required to achieve exceptional results.

Good day Nour! We are actually showing a different technique were speed isn't the best variable. Over the course of 20 years, Kris has done this a few different ways and we've come to the conclusion that with our pads, the MB-20 compound and low RPM's wet fabrication is the easiest way to remove a scratch and buff the surface so that ALL skill levels can get similar results. Soooooo many variables, each stone is different and all products do not work the same. Some polishing pads required pressure with a wet-to-dry technique as shown in this video and some pad require minimum pressure and continuous water supply as shown in our newer videos. The blacks can be very hard to achieve the final shine. My best advice is to contact a professional refurbishment expert. If you send us an email at [e-mail] I can tell you a possible place to start. Otherwise start with a scrap of the same stone and practice different techniques until you get it right.

Should there still be a slight "haze" to the stone before the hogs hair and mb compound is applied? I keep buffing it with a 3000 grit and I just can't get it to look like a high gloss, there is still a little haziness to the granite, however, I have not ordered a hogs hair pad yet.

Hi Jerry! Check out the video at 25:11 time stamp, you will see the surface dry a little and a haze appears just slightly, right as Kris cleans it before moving to the hogs hair pad. Different types of granite as well as different colors will show different level of haze. Hi Clint! A very similar process would apply to marble, however you will not want to use the MB-20 polishing compound as that is specifically for Granite & Quartzite. We recommend consulting with your local hard surface and stone shop to get the right Marble Polishing Compound (MPC) for your project. Easystonecare.com is an awesome resource for that and also carries all of our products. Give them a call and you won't be disappointed. You can achieve the shine but depending on the amount of material that needs to be ground away it could be near impossible to keep the surface flat with only resin pads. A wavy surface will be noticeable in the reflection. You should check out our newer top polishing video also.

Thank you for the well explained video! But would it be possible to follow the videos instruction on my marble table which is completely white? I think that touching the surface with my bare hands is the only way to judge the polishing, but not during the process when you want to even the area out with 1000 grit (clouding process at 16:00).

I would not use the wet-to-dry technique on marble. The method outlined in our newest top polishing video featuring our new kit would work much better.
