Saw this on Varusteleka website...came here to see what it is like. Thanks mate for this review....my current civilian hiking-style pack has served me well for past 11 years travelling the world, particularly in West Africa. But it is very close to kaput now...zips breaking, tears here and there and trim coming off in bits. Its time....

One of the things i really love about your videos Lars is they challenge me to view and think about the world not just in 'a' different perspective, but from a multiple of perspectives. Hence it's always very refreshing watching your videos. Always look forward to the Survival Russia notification popping up in my inbox! I'm always guaranteed to learn something!

As a Canadian, I envy Europeans their ability to access military surplus from so many nations. My military makes some good stuff, but we're a small military and not much surplus hits the market. The US surplus is fairly accessible but can be pricey-- it's usually cheaper to buy from the US and have it shipped across the border (even with the exchange rate and customs fees).

I see some features on that Belgian pack that are completely unique (like the waist belt buckle), and others that are reminiscent of other military packs. Side utility pouches that zip off and can be zipped together to form a smaller day pack=British Army bergen. Quick release shoulder straps with a forked tension buckle in a metal loop, with a snap strap covering the buckle=U.S. Army ALICE pack. Zipper on the bottom to access gear from the opposite end=U.S. Army MOLLE pack [although that feature on the MOLLE may have come from this pack; I can't remember if the old CFP90 mountain ruck had a bottom zipper or not]. All that said, this looks like a very solid pack at a bargain price.

I like the Belgian Jigsaw pattern quite a bit for here in Alaska and multi-terrain... very effective in much of the vegetation Moose like to frequent like willow, alder, birch, spruce... beaver dams, swamps/ponds, and boreal mix of deciduous and evergreens into wetland or river environments... also works well in sub-alpine to alpine and tundra as colors of Fall can become quite similar. I use larger packs routinely on my solo hunts... especially after outfitting everyone else's fishing and hunting trips all season long professionally; I often hunt the fringes of later seasons and more demanding conditions to harsher weather extremes. the Big pack can handle the rugged stuff with utility room -- be more dependable, comfortable, and desirable for the added stresses of tougher, longer use -- with a much greater capacity to take on gear and game animals when you are running into late 3-season and running into 4-season. Same with spring hunts in snow where most would call it winter particularly in the high country. Looks like a great pack!!! I look forward to your longer term use and review.

So now we know the TRUTH! The Pink Troll is really Lars' Bodyguard who covers his back from Enemy Gang Members! And since she got taller, he needed a Bigger Ruck! I betcha she'll be manning a Rear Facing PKM in the Luaz when it's done! So nobody better mess with the Survival Russia Homestead! : )

I did a long hike in Belgium with a former Belgian special ops guy who owned this pack. He's been in Rwanda and so on with it, back in the day they would do 40km hikes with his budies carrying over 40kg of equipement on their free time. In some missions they would have to carry this much if not heavier loads and he said he would be fairly comfortable, that's how well built this rucksack is. At first I thought the camo looked stupid and all, but the more we hiked through the woodland, the more I grew convinced this rucksack is genius. Btw it's a 130L rucksack with the side pouches, probable 100-110 without them. Back in France, I decided I would purchase a military surplus F2 from a former soldier; got it for super cheap and I absolutely love it. Truth be told the Belgian army one is equally good if not superior in terms of features, although the F2 is easier to come by and generally cheaper. Also, I don't like camo when it comes to packs but I tend to prefer the camo from the F2. I heard the F1 is better but that's a story for another day. All in all, yeah, top of the shelf quality rucksack. It's the military version of the Bergan Teesar I believe, and so is the F2, and that thing is like 200€ shipping not included if purchased new. Some websites sell the Belgian army rucksack at about 60 bucks; it's a great deal really, considering how recent they are, they rarely are in bad condition, just very dirty.

Nice pack, looks similar to the Berghaus Atlas with Cyclops ll carrying system although is not exactly the same. This kind of packs are common in Britsh as well as German armed forces. The hip belt fastener is called 'Berg buckle' by the way and Britsh backpack manufacturers e.g. Karrimor or Berghaus are using them already for decades ;-) ATB. Franz, bugikraxn.

Lars I did some looking for you and the capacities of the pack are as follows: The main Compartment is 110 Liters, each side pouch is 6.8 Liters, so it is a combined 123.89 Liters. In Standard, the dimensions are as follows: Main Compartment is 24" x 10" x 28" Height for 6720 Cubic Inches, the side pockets are each 14" x 7.5" x 4" for 420 Cubic Inches each. This does not take into account the lid capacity. Yeah, it is pretty big!

Hey. if you want the bag to be smaller, then you can remove the side pouches and then zip side zippers together. OR you zip the the pouches together like "rocketpouches", and then zip that thing on so you have 2 pouches on the center. OR you can also just zip on a single pouch, or that flat panel on so its center on the pack, and will make much tighter pack. Am also one of the few that got one of those panels, i contacted verusteleka, and they said they never had seen one of those panels before.

That's it, a back pack for carrying little Pink Trolls around the forest with you, Lars. And should you be under some kind of threat, the LPT whips out the shotgun and bob's your uncle, threat dealt with. Okay, that was a little bit overboard, but it's a great back pack anyhow. A bit about camo colour now. A youtuber who is ex-army said that if one has black as one of the colours and this may include any colour that looks blackish, the eye tends to be drawn to it because black doesn't occur in nature's foliage and the eye picks up on the colour black. He was using a Gillie suit to show his point and this worked phenomenally well to keep him hidden from prying eyes. Enough of my ramblings, take care...
@SurvivalRussia
@SurvivalRussia 7 жыл бұрын
The Pink Troll as rucksack gunner :) Awesome idea John. I have heard about the "Black camo" issue. He's regurgitating a half truth :) A sniper will generally prefer a pattern without black and with texture(Gillie). Normally a sniper will carry the Gillie in the ruck and use it on the last move to a spotting position. Black is not found in foliage as such, but it's surely found in the shadows and spaces between leaves, branches and so forth. I just need to look out my window to see this for myself. If black was a camo No-No, I doubt nature would chose to use it a frequently as it is ;) Many animals use black in their camo such as tigers, leopards,Zebra's, birds, snakes and what not. Generally you also "blur" out the corners of military vehicles, painting them black. I wonder who that "Army" KZbinr is LOL Rule No 1 for camo and concealment is; Don't move! Movement gives you away more than anything.

I like the Bergen but I'm not too keen on the camo pattern though, it looks like it will be comfortable when loaded, that waist belt buckle is the same as the old Berghaus Crusader, another extremely good pack, I prefer that buckle than the normal male/female snap buckle setup, it's unlikely to break, they should of used it on the newer Berghaus Vulcan Bergen, which I now have. Nice one Lars and enjoy your new Bergen bud 👍🏻, atb to you and your family from a very wet U.K. Paul.

Belgium issues good gear to their military, pre EU. i have no idea if they still do, but at the time that fine pack was made they did. i have a friend was in their spec ops, used to tell me stories, we began our friendship when he learned i'm a big fan of FN. my pack is a swiss army mountaineer's waterproof pack, with the leather straps, and bottom, with heavy metal buckles, and clips. i used the info you gave on the waist belt, bought a modern alice pack belt, then used 4 heavy saddle maker rivets to mount it. very strong connection. it works very well. i can carry 40 kg easy with that weight off my shoulders. i love old gear, nobody makes anything that strong anymore, made to last if well cared for.

Hej Lars! Please help me out. Does it have any internal frame? I have after 30 years busted up my Fjällräven Gyro 80, so I need a replacement. This pack seems good and I actually like the pattern.

To me, it looks like it doesn't have a proper frame.
