My name is Phil Rosato. In this video I will be demonstrating the use of syncopation for practice and in the development of a drum solo, as influenced by Ted Reed's book: "Syncopation For The Modern Drummer".
Syncopation is defined as "a disturbance or interruption of the regular flow of rhythm": a "placement of rhythmic stresses or accents where they wouldn't normally occur". (Wikipedia)
I have learned these techniques from many great and influential drummers: Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Steve Gadd, Jim Chapin and far too many other greats to mention.
I'm going to share what I have learned from these masters in hope of inspiring you to adopt and interpret these techniques to increase your drumming vocabulary as well as your articulation.
