Isn't that why the government created the highway system? Every single other item you could possibly use in your day to day life is moved by semi trucks. What makes this any different?

They are actually pretty easy to spot. They have Govt GSA plates. and are totaly un marked. Often a one ton vehicle is following that looks a bit odd. It kinda looks like a camper but much different. No windows and bristles with antennas . The also have Govt GSA type plates and very dark tinted windows. They by pass all truck stops and will not pull over for highway patrol car for any reason. I have heard that some have aerial escort.

You can't miss these convoys when they move. Usual 8-10 armored trucks, with a couple helicopters and a full complement of local LEOs to handle traffic. And the security detail doesn't allow cars anywhere near the transporter.

You've accurately described the Minuteman III missile transports between their field silos and Minot, Warren, or Malmstrom AFBs. The transports in this segment are DOE transports between facilities like Pantex, Y-12, and Savannah River complexes. They are FAR more discreet than the missile transports.

In Britain the trident nuclear missiles are transported from Aldermaston in England, where they are built, to the Faslane submarine base in Scotland, not in apparently ordinary trucks but as part of military convoy. I suppose you could argue the American method is safer because a miltary convoy would be more prone to terrorist attacks. Although, surely the safest method would be to build the weapons as close to the base as possible?
@bnctaj
@bnctaj 5 жыл бұрын
With the 5,000 or so nuclear warheads the US has, stretched from coast to coast, it's not as easy to make things close like they are in the UK. And making the housing bases closer increases first strike risk, particularly against US ICBMs or (grounded) air leg of the trident. Submarines not already in their deterrent patrol boxes, too, would be highly vulnerable. That said, there are plenty of videos that show how NNSA precautions vary dependent on the locale through which they're driving, road conditions, and (presumably) cargo.

@sbreheny
@sbreheny 5 жыл бұрын
This is irresponsible reporting. They never interviewed an expert regarding the actual danger. The only real danger is that someone could try to steal the cargo - and that's what all the precautions are for. There is no realistic way that a nuclear weapon could go off with a nuclear yield due to a highway truck crash. (This is because there are multiple detonators inside that have to go off in a specific sequence to produce the precise implosion pattern that starts the nuclear reaction. There are also several other things that have to happen in order for the yield to be significant - such as the neutron trigger going off when it should). On top of that, the material inside is only moderately radioactive (far less so than spent reactor fuel).

Agreed, the cores only real danger is if it was powder, as a alpha emitter. Even than if the government is still following its rules of transport as they did in the 50s the cores and assemblies are separated when shipped on ground, or until use/ readiness is needed.

I find it VERY unlikely that a fully assembled nuclear warhead is transported without any type of protection. Why would some nuclear convoys be heavily guarded but others not at all?
@jamesluck2969
@jamesluck2969 4 жыл бұрын
I mean at that a fully assembled war head is unlikely, I'm betting more on the cores and assemblies than a fully constructed one. Assembly in one truck core in another, even with the dead key in you still have a risk of explosives. Talk to anyone who's had experience in and around nukes, for example with the nike program. You keep a few with warheads ready but transport is done with cores out.

Those are transported but heavily armed convoys have armored trucks with MK19 40mm machine guns. Also overhead have usually a fully armed UH-1 huey circling overhead for air support in case of any attack on the convoy. They also have highway patrol that runup ahead block streets. Obviously, the weapons are not armed.

Yeah I heard the base's transporter was down that day. It was supposed to be Team AlphaZetaWhiskySevenBlack's job to maintain it, but they were blocked off by some rather angry Playadians and wouldn't you know it, the metaphasic conductor blew its energy. Being a highly sensitive cargo, they couldn't wait any longer and then just shipped them out on trucks because every single thing the government does is highly suspicious and if anything normal happens without it being a conspiracy, like an unscheduled fart in the broom closet of FLoor 12 of the Decagon, then it's highly out of the ordinary and very suspicious. I mean is this what people really want reality to be like?

There are extremely more dancargo out there. I have been driving a truck since 2000. In 2003, I picked a load up in Tracy, CA. It was a government load. Yes I had my hazmat endorsement. I had 2 stops. 1 at Hill AFB, in Utah. I delivered hydraulic fluid there. The extremely flammable kind. 2nd stop in Fort Carson, in Colorado. There I delivered Grenades. Now this was in 2003, when Afghanistan War was ongoing, and Iraq War was just starting. So when the U.S. Government ships loads, alot of times There is NO Manifest. I was only told what I was healing after delivery. Yes they can do that. They made sure I was properly licensed! But extremely flammable hydraulic fluid and grenades? It was secret. But I will tell you. If I had known about what I was healing, I would have refused the load. I did another load from the Denver Mint! Had to follow more security rules than the first load I talked about. Made it to Houston Federal Reserve! They secured the street for about 1 hour, while they transported the $80,000.00 worth of pennies off my trailer. PENNIES. Yet it was treated with higher security than this last load I am going to talk about. I picked up a load from southeastern Massachusetts! From a computer Manufacturer . RAYTHEON! Backed my trailer up. 4 hours to load. Pulled out. They secured it with the most interesting lock I ever seen. Took it all the way to Fort Hood. Went to the AH-64 APACHE MAINTENANCE BUILDING. They unloaded my trailer and then told me I was hauling 60 New Upgraded Computers for the APACHE! Told me the shipment was worth just over $60,000,000.00! I was in shock. And then he told me, nothing to worry about, dude, you were followed by 6 heavily armed Federal Agents. I could not get out of there fast enough. That sent Spiders crawling up my back. Not that I was followed, but the fact I was hauling soooo much expensive cargo, and yet was never told anything on my end, I mean it was my ASS they put on the line, for shit pay!!!!
