Top Strike Bowfin

I am targeting Grinnell (Bowfin) with a lure from ‪@topstrikefishing‬ . In spite of them not wanting to bite i added a skirt to the bait and caught a 5.70 lb Bowfin on the silver spinner . We also caught several Spotted Gar.

Be careful eating mud fish, in most places, even with lower levels of mercury, bowfin, are extremely high in mercury, soo much so,that lot's of waters have recommendations,not to eat any, in otherwords, one fish could exceed recommended levels of mercury.

Yeah, I tried braided line when it first came out and didn't like it on my spinning reel. I use trilene smooth XL on just about everything or trilene big game on my catfish reels.

We’ve caught fish that looked like that in northern Minnesota. They were called bow eels or dog fish.

Woo. Nice catch. I am a big fan of in-line spinners. I probably caught more fish( not always the biggest )off of that lure than any other.

@@topstrikefishing I live in Pennsylvania and I fish in stocked trout streams. But I also end up catching a lot of smallmouth and panfish on them. I fish some rivers and lakes too. I mostly use a 1/8 rooster tail. The fire tiger that is orange and green with the gold blade is a good one a brown and white one is a good one too. All black , all chatruce lime green is another one I catch them on. You can send me some if you want, but I honestly might not be fishing too much again this year. Gold blades are the ones I exclusively fish, can’t remember catching anything on a silver one.

@@gratefuled762 Dang water is so low up here now. Think I do better on the gold ones too. Rooster Tails don't spin too reliably and get bent up too easily for my liking. Smallmouth definitely hit these hard. Maybe you might like to try these out next year. 👍👍

If you will make a long cast and then pull off a few feet more line and put a piece of scotch tape around the spool that will stop a deep backlash and if you catch a fish that pulls more line a tape will come off. Just a simple braid trick.

I ain't a fan of the braid atall. Even if it don't birdnest on you, when you hang a big fish or catch a big Blind Ell, it cuts right through the spool of line til it's half way down to the bottom of the spool. The only thing I like it for, and it's perfect for it, is on a Bream Buster or a cane pole, cause you can get a strong, strong pound test of braid that will straighten out a wire hook if you hang up, but the line is still small and hard for the fishes to see. I don't like it NONE on a rod and reel.

Also nice to have braid if you're jigging blade baits in deep water for walleye etc. The stretch on mono results in less action on the bait and also it's harder feel your way around a rocky bottom IMO.

What brand of braid are you using? I love braid to mono and braid to fluro. I tie about 25-100 ft of leader line (depending of what I am fishing for). Over the years, I have noticed a lot of variances in braid brands. Some will say 30# test and it break throwing a lure. I've seen some that's like embroidery yarn and isn't worth a flip. By far, I have had the greatest success with Spectra Power Pro. It is approximately 13/50ths of mono in diameter...so 30# test has an 8# test diameter. One trick to consider is soaking the remaining spool of braid in fabric softener over night. Rinse it off the next day and alliw it ti dry in an air conditioned room. Take off the braid from your reel and spool on the new line. It should stop a lot of the tangling and catching.

Try power pro braid, at least 30 lb for a baitcaster. Spiderwire braid sucks, it's not round enough. Thicker braid is better for baitcaster, I use 50 lb for snakehead fishing

Mono is 10 times better than braid. I tried the Braid about 5 years ago for just 1 trip and have never usedd it again. It is a waste of time and hard earned money in my opinion

A good old friend tried it when spider wire first came out. We went fishing one morning and he hung a huge blue cat. It got up in shallow water and kinda stuck his head up out of the water and spun. Went it did you could see his fin just pop the line. He never cussed and that was one of the only times I remember him saying a foul word was about braided line .
