It's hard to believe that Rhystic Study is a common. It's just such a great card!
@andrewsparkes88295 жыл бұрын
I'd argue it's in the same boat as Ashnod's Altar. No it's not been printed as anything but common, but it came from a similarly badly designed set overall (which he admits himself) and is priced even more than AA, putting it even harder out of reach of casual commander players. So still comes under 2 of the 3 'rulings' which disqualified AA from the list.

LOVE how you justified the #4 ramp spells! Land drops are too underrated in commander decks. Hell, any of the ramp spells/signets/talismans/etc are usually the first thing players take out of their decks when making cuts to "upgrade" it once they make some trades/buy new cards and it is the first step to consistency failure! 2/3-cmc ramp cards/fixing are just so, so important!

I noticed a lack of Gray Merchant. He is a staple of any black deck, and is a win con in a decent chunk of them. Hands down, favorite Common.

I somehow miss Sakura-Tribe Elder. I mean Elder gets played in nearly every deck that runs green and does not have a theme like Elves that limits the creature type.

Back when Rhystic Study was on standard, it was just another common, and, it came as a pair in a pre con WU deck.

You are incorrect about arcane denial btw. Counterspell puts you and one other person down a card with respect to the two other players in a four person game. However. Arcane Denial puts you even with the other two players, and puts the person you counterspelled up by one. The short version is that counterspell has your opponents collectively up by two on you, but arcane denial only by one.
@jasperbaas4505 жыл бұрын
I like this thinking! Also creates less hate from the player and might help them find interaction against others
@julianvickers5 жыл бұрын
@@jasperbaas450 Yeah, typically when choosing counterspells for most of my decks, my order goes: 1. Swan Song, 2. Arcane Denial, 3. Counterspell, 4. Negate I'm not counting Mana Drain or FoW here, because I don't have multiples of those.

Hasnt per say won me a game. An auto include in most decks that have black but it does shift you in most cases into a more winning position.
@SeisoYabai5 жыл бұрын
@@TheMystcast The expression is "per se." Also if you can flicker/recursion GMoA, it rapidly becomes a Lava Axe+, dealing upwards of 5 damage at least every few turns and *at least* healing you once for that same amount, usually way more. Even at 2 or 3 devotion, it still hits a lot harder than most similar cards. Then you get into the ridiculous territory of having 8 or more devotion, which isn't all that hard when you consider Enchantments...

no lightning bolt??
@andrewsparkes88295 жыл бұрын
Burn in Commander simply does not exist in the same way as in other formats, due to the higher life total and more players. Like mill, the cards that make it good in 20-life (or 60-card, for mill) formats, with only one opponent, are near useless in commander. For burn, it's pretty crap, even in Torban. You either need permanents that continually punish players (like Immolation Shaman) or X-spells and a way to make infinite mana. "Deal 3 damage" is equivalent to "Deal 0.5 damage" due to having 3x more opponents each at 2x more starting life total, so worse relatively.
@luckymottu78415 жыл бұрын
@@andrewsparkes8829 yet its still one of the top played red cards on EDHrec and being played in over 8000 EDH decks. 1 mana 3 dmg at instant speed is still good in commander if your playing it right, rarely will that dmg go face.
@andrewsparkes88295 жыл бұрын
@@luckymottu7841 There is much better red spot removal. It is played because people are too attached to how good it is in other formats. Popular =/= good. Especially in casual formats.
@luckymottu78415 жыл бұрын
@@andrewsparkes8829 Yes i agree there is better red removal as i never said there wasnt or that this should be on the list at all. You just said that burn doesn't exist in commander when its obviously being played.
@andrewsparkes88295 жыл бұрын
@@luckymottu7841 I never said that. I literally said "Burn in Commander simply does not exist in the same way as in other formats" and "the cards that make it good in 20-life formats, with only one opponent, are near useless in commander" and that different cards are good in Commander burn, like permanents which deal damage in a punisher way and X-spells. Not that it was not viable at all. Burn is actually amazing in commander, especially now we have Torban, and I never said it wasn't. I said the 60-card, 20-life, 1-opponent staples from Modern/Legacy/Vintage are far less powerful and you need a different tactic to make burn work. Which is absolutely possible, just not with cards like Lightning Bolt. Eidolon is probably the only card to cross over to Commander burn in a decent way and that is a punisher effect, which I already stated was a good tactic.
