Like him or not, you gotta admit for the first 10 or so years his show did things no one else did. And I think the shows from the 90s still stand the test of time.

His shows were great when still at NBC, too. My favorite thing they did was borrow the miniature Sony camera - of which there were only three in the wild at the time, one at each of NBC, ABC, and CBS - from ABC for ridiculous stunts because NBC wouldn’t lend his show their camera. I liked how, during his first show at CBS, Tom Brokaw came on stage after the Top Ten and took the blue cards, saying they were the intellectual property of NBC. There were many great moments, especially with Letterman’s mom. I especially enjoyed James Earl Jones’s reading of the Top Ten list for Y2K. He and Dave both wore tuxedos.
