10. Somehow, I knew Photoshop Flowey was going to be on here somewhere. I didn't expect it to be so low, but I expected it to be here. 9. Zant sticks out so much and I LOVE it. I think the reason he managed to stay calm and collected for as long as he did was because he always felt like he had the upper hand. 8. I honestly didn't think too much about how out of place the Pete fight actually was at the time but I really see it now. 7. I haven't played FF7R, but I know enough about Tonberries to know that I do not want to mess with that thing before I'm ready. Side note, my group recently started playing Pathfinder and I have a character build in reserve that I nicknamed "The Tonberry" for good reason. 6. Clock-La was both completely, and not expected at all. I agree with your assessment that the entire chapter is effectively the bossfight since it's the only time in the series where the boss can take potshots at you the whole chapter. 5. Haven't played Drakengard. But the insanity you described does sound like something Yoko Taro would make. 4. 02. What is it with Kirby and having final bosses that would not be out of place in some horror games? 3. It is so strange to watch a Sonic game wax philosophical but somehow it does not bother me here. 2. Cheating? Explain if you’re ok with it?
@andrewhaase18263 жыл бұрын
@@braverydoesstuff4063: By Cheating Bosses, I am referring to bosses that will cheat or use unfair tactics in their battles. Here are some examples: *Mitch Connor - South Park: The Fractured But Whole -He's basically the equivalent of that one guy who goes "Nuh-uh, didn't hurt me. I'm immune." As sometimes during the fight he can just declare that some attacks just didn't damage him at all! He'll also give himself extra turns for cheap shots, inflict status effects he shouldn't be able to (on the entire party no less), steal your turn if you take to long, and he is also the only boss in the game who uses deflector shields. And whatever you do, DON'T ATTACK HIM WHILE THE SHIELD IS UP! Any damage dealt to him while the shield is up will instead damage the attacker! Your best bet (which you SHOULD USE) is to just stack as many damaging status effects as possible as he wont be able to declare that they don't hurt him. What's more, you have to fight him AGAIN at the end of the game. Difference here is that after a while, even Dr. Timothy gets fed up with Connor refusing to stay dead and just takes away his ability to cheat so you can finish him off. *Shadow Sae - Persona 5 -As Sae's Palace is a casino where every game is rigged in her favor so only she can win, it only makes sense the first part of the fight is a rigged roulette wheel. If you try to attack her during the betting, you'll take substantial damage yourself. It's only when you expose Sae's cheating and corner her does the battle truly begin. At this point, Sae blows her top, transforms and is done messing around. Willing to do whatever it takes to beat the Phantom Thieves. What's more, in Persona 5 Royal, after Sae transforms, the roulette wheel will change and represent different damage types. These will determine her resistances and what attacks she'll have. *Azazel - Tekken 6 -Some of your attacks (even if you directly hit Azazel) WON'T DAMAGE HIM! He DEFINITELY isn't blocking during these points and there are no invincibility frames, but just like Mitch Conner, he can just decide at whatever point to be impervious to damage. *Night Terror - Soulcalibur 3 -You can't ring him out! Do that and he'll just fly back up to the arena! *Tabuu - Super Smash Bros Brawl -Why? It's that DAMN WING AOE ATTACK! It might as well be an instakill and it covers the ENTIRE SCREEN! Every time I fight him I have to PRAY HE DOESN'T USE IT! *High Max - Megaman X6 -He is supposed to be weak to Blaze Heatnix's weapon. But get this... High Max is IMMUNE TO ALL OF YOUR ATTACKS! The only way to damage him is to use a very specific method. You need to shoot him with a fully charged buster shot and then quickly follow up with another attack, like Blaze Heatnix's Magma Blade. Question is... HOW IN THE HOLY MOTHER OF F*** WERE WE SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT? There was ABSOLUTELY NO INDICATION given that you had to use THIS SPECIFIC STRATEGY to defeat him before hand, and if you don't know what to do here, its impossible!

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and disagree [somewhat] about Zant; see, throughout the game, he has indeed been shown to be an imposing, menacing figure, and that moment...that freaky moment (that Ghirahim may or may not have totally definitely absolutely stole XD) where Zant monologues with Link & Midna, is that brief moment where he lets the mask slip (figuratively AND literally), just slightly, to show that he has control, absolutely craves it, and freaking RELISHES it. When you get to the very end, he finally unleashes the insanity that's been bubbling since you, as the hero, revealed yourself to be a legitimate threat to his plans unraveling. All told, I wouldn't say him acting so...pardon my French...bat-shit insane, is out-of-character: rather, unexpected. Though I will agree that, compared to the remainder of the lineup of bosses at Twilight Princess's disposal, yes, he sticks out like the sorest of sore thumbs. Seriously, who the HELL saw THAT coming!? We go from intimidating, supreme lord of the in-between, to a coked-up Looney Tune that has more screws loose than a piece of Ikea furniture that's been spilled out the back-end of a cargo jet! The problem with Zant is how quickly it happens. There needed to be more time to flesh out such a change. Both these villains needed more time to shine and unfortunately, they never give them such time.

I actually find Zant to be a very interesting boss in every respect. And the fact that his personality ONLY exists as one extreme of the other is what makes him one of the most intimidating Zelda bosses. When he's calm and collected, you can at least get a read on what he might do next, but when that cool head turns to deranged jealousy and spite, he's impossible to predict and even to this day, I have a hard time dealing with him

tbh I heard the joke about the Kirby boss that tears out its own innards and beats you to death with them and I immediately thought of Void Termina from Star Allies with how its true form is contained inside of it, basically in a soft fleshy shell to replicate a real beating heart. also *wAIT, THE LORD OF LIGHTNING JUST MELLOWS OUT AFTER YOU BEAT HIM?! To keep it at least a *little bit* kid-friendly, maybe the Kirby boss that would beat you with their own innards could be based on a sea cucumber; somewhat like Pyukumuku. It does do the same thing, so I could see that. May be gruesome to think about, but it is what sea cucumbers actually do, and what Pyukumuku replicates.

Merlina is probably the best villain-of-the-week in the Sonic franchise. She’s unique, has an actual motivation other than “destroy everything/take over the world”, makes Sonic think about his own actions, and has a kickass final boss battle and theme. Granted, she doesn’t have much competition, as most other Sonic villains are either polarizing (Neo Metal Sonic, Mephiles, Infinite) or mostly disliked (Black Doom, the Deadly Six, Eggman Nega).
@WaterKirby1994 Жыл бұрын
Eggman Nega is supposed to be an even more insane & evil Eggman that Blaze normally fights, I thought people liked him. As for Metal Sonic & Mephiles I thought they were 2 of the most well liked villains in the series. Merlina is easily the deepest & most complex antagonist that Sonic ever fought. You are right about the Deadly 6 being the most despised characters in the Sonic Series at this point.

to be fair about pete, it was very clearly stated in kgh1 that it's donald who uses his magic in order to transform them into their alternate forms, so they can fit in better and don't draw too much attention, in order to protect the balances of the world and keep them a secret from each other. it's not something that just happens on its own. with that in mind, it's not weird for pete, who is a very clearly a bad guy -- and at least in this version not a very smart one at that --, not to bother with a disguise to fit in and just go in as he is, so there is some reasoning as to why he looks so much out of place. doesn't really explain the more cartoony nature of the battle, but it's not as random as it might seem at first.

A little something about your comment about not knowing anything about The Lord of Lightning and Crumbleden. The brochure in the pause menu gave us lore about the location. Apparently, the altar we fight the The Lord of Lightning on was built by the people before they died and it was speculated that its purpose was to fight a terrifying creature or whorship it for the power it provide for the kingdom. Probably cause by the said dragon himself.

I was mostly expecting the true final boss the rematch against the revived Queen Sectonia at the end of The True Arena from Kirby Triple Deluxe to be on here as the Kirby rep due to how disturbing/horrifying it gets in phase 2. Let me break it down Kirby's rematch against Queen Sectonia is a final showdown split into 2 phases, phase 1 is essentially the first phase of the final fight against the malevolent Insect-type Alien Queen from the main story only she has more health and her attacks do more damage basically somewhat of a cakewalk if you know what you're doing, phase 2 aka the final phase is where this rematch goes into the Kirby final boss trope of going from standard somewhat cutesy final boss into something I'd see in a really disturbing Survival-Horror game and by that I mean she's so filled with hatred and vengeance against Kirby that she rips off her own head and she now fights with you new powerful attacks all while holding her severed head that is still cackling manically all while purple blood is continuing to ooze out of the stump on her neck where head used to be.
@elricropp71632 жыл бұрын
I feel like the point of zant was to show that kind of breakdown, watching this calm menacing villain character that’s been a terrifying force up until that point suddenly breaks down and basically goes insane, which in my eyes just serves to unnerve the player.

“...a Kirby final boss where it tears out its own innards and beats you to death with them.” While that isn’t entirely exact, in Phase 2 of Star Allies’ final boss Void Termina you do get to battle an ACTUAL BEATING HEART that rains blood down upon you (and summons explosive floating runes)... which is jarring because the game is about making friends by throwing pink hearts at enemies to befriend them. Why wouldn’t they make a boss fight out of the actual body organ?
@derrickhaggard3 жыл бұрын
And let's not forget how at the start of the 2nd and final phase of the true final fight against Queen Sectonia at the end of The True Arena aka the fight against Soul of Sectonia/Sectonia Soul in Kirby Triple Deluxe the villainous insect-esque alien queen is consumed by her lust for vengeance against Kirby that she rips off her own head and now you have to fight her while she's holding her severed head that's still laughing manically and we get the extra disturbing/survival horror appropriate display of the stump of her neck still oozing purple blood.
@voidastralbirth3 жыл бұрын
On the subject of Kirby horror (though not related to blood), a scene from Godzilla vs Kong heavily reminded me of a terrifying thing that happened in, of all things, Kirby Planet Robobot. In order to not give any spoilers about the godsend of a movie that is GvK, I’ll just spoil my favorite Kirby game instead XD (...so, spoilers for a 5 yr old game?) At the game’s end, as President Max Profitt Haltmann is activating the ultimate doomsday machine his company built, a system malfunction (caused by Susie) electro-fried his brain effectively rendering him a braindead robotic shell of a shell of his former self. However, the malfunction gave his machine, the final boss Star Dream, a consciousness... at the cost of his own. As the normal final fight plays out, Haltmann’s husk is still supposedly just sitting there at the control seat, right up until Kirby destroys Star Dream, Gurren Lagann-style, in a deep space explosion. The nightmare-fueled implications become even worse when you are fight the True Arena’s Star Dream Soul OS in its “Heart of Nova” phases, as you can hear the sounds of Haltmann wailing in pain every time you destroy any part of the heart. It’s Haltmann’s mind in the program, trapped, and suffering as Kirby rips and tears the rebuilt Nova’s core apart. And when the heart finally shatters, you hear one final, distorted, cry of anguish as the final remains of what used to be Haltmann’s soul are left to a fate of complete and utter obliteration with the heart’s destruction. Very little that I have seen in movies and games come anywhere near this level of “dark”, to the point where when something similarly dark pops up (like in GvK), I think of Kirby. This is why I love the Kirby franchise so much.

I personally like the idea of the zant fight, I see the cutscene right before as symbolic: the serious demeanor always has him brandishing his mask, but when it is removed his true self is prevalent, his de-masking in the cutscene perfectly represents this, in such a subtle detail, and after all: you’ve foiled every countermeasure to keep you from reaching ganon, you would be a little nutty if no matter how hard you tried, they just kept coming.

Anachronistic does NOT mean out-of-place, it means in the wrong time. Like if you're seeing Big Mechanical machinery in Medieval times. The root "chrono" means time. The argument for Zant could be made that he was always the petty wacky boss (which his backstory reveals as much), but was on a false high when Ganondorf leant him his power, and the façade fell away when Link had thoroughly cut through most of the power and illusion. Also, you don't mention how Clock-La in one last death throe manages to cripple one of the team?

When I think out of place, the first game that comes to mind is Super Paper Mario. While it's story was dark, it's tone all over the place, and it's bosses definitely weird, two in particular stick out at me. This is a game where you fight some weird bosses, Robot Dragon, a brainwashed Luigi, brainwashed Luigi again, O'chunks, and a skeleton ice dragon from literal hell. But the second and third bosses. Francis. That fucking weaboo chameleon. Before you get to beat him up, he decides to try and woo Peach via DATING SIM. But he doesn't haunt my nightmares. She does. The sound of her neck breaking. Her haunting call of "Mimimimimimi...." while she's chasing you. And dear god, that appearance. I may hate Francis, but at least my brain let's me forget about him from time to time. But she doesn't leave.

Another honorable mention could have been either the two part hugo fight or Apocrypha both from radiant historia. All fairness, zant is throwing a tantrum when he's finally encountered in the twilight realm as he believes he's destined to serve as king of the twilight realm. Back when he was calm and collected he believed himself omnipotent, protected by a god or a god like being to him at least, all the power and influence plopped down into his lap without him doing anything. He's very calm and collected as all things work in his favor from enslaving his own kind to capturing hyrule. Of course once he realizes how much of a hindrance both link and midna are, he confronts the both of them in an attempt to finish them off in one fell swoop but fails. by this point he hides himself away in the twilight realm being the coward that he is likely biding his time till he can cover the world in twilight once again. Eventually the ones that foiled his plans enter the twilight world, undo the transmutations of the inhabitants and free them from his influence. Once he's finally encountered, all his aces, every carefully laid out plan is gone and he's effectively cornered. He doesn't handle it all that well, going downright psychotic as he believes this is his destiny, he should be the true ruler, an omnipotent god is on his side and yet here he is in a situation where his confidence is gone and all that's left is his true nature.

One of my favorite out-of-place bosses is Ancient Wu in True Crime: Streets of LA. For most of the game, it's kind of like a reverse Grand Theft Auto, where you play as a cop fighting against criminals. So you're not really expecting anything out of the ordinary when you go to confront the Chinese Triad gang boss Ancient Wu. You sneak into his Chinese restaurant safehouse and start fighting his goons... Then a zombie shows up in the kitchen. And things are just getting STARTED. As you go deeper into the dark catacombs beneath the restaurant, you fight your way through even more zombies until you get to Ancient Wu's lair in a cavern filled with lava. There, he sics two fire demon concubines on you, followed by giant floating demon heads, and finally, a living breathing Chinese DRAGON. None of this is ever explained as an hallucination or a dream sequence or anything. For some reason, there's just an immortal Chinese sorcerer crimeboss living in present-day Los Angeles.
