I am now a chronic seed saver. Most of my favorites were given to me in the past and I value them more than gold. In the past Gurney's was my go to but they have gone profit driven. Don't get me wrong, I have varieties that came from catalogues that I still grow years later. They are the exceptions. There are so many parameters that determine your success with any given strain. I have found that letting it get acclimated for your area makes a huge difference. Never give up!

Good point about Baker Creek is that they have free shipping! I've found that a lot of seed catalogs have good prices on their seeds, but the shipping $ is way too high and cancels out the seed price savings. I'd rather buy more seeds!
@JWHealing Жыл бұрын
YES! THIS!!!!! This is a point that a professional grower might not appreciate. For a home grower that keeps ordering batches of seeds as the inspiration/motivation strikes me, the free shipping at Baker Creek is huge. I don't mind paying some shipping, but I think it was Territorial that wanted to charge me something like $8 for shipping one seed packet within the continental US and I thought "Oh hell no!" :-)
@originalwoolydragon8387 Жыл бұрын
@@JWHealing, Periodically, the seed companies with high shipping rates will have announce a free shipping weekend, etc., but when I want to buy seeds, I don't want to wait. Personally, I would rather they charge an extra 10-20 cents per seed pack and cut back on their shipping charges.

My list for me as a back yard grower. Johnny’s, Totally Tomatoes, Pinetree, Bakers Creek, and Territorial. Also runner up for me is Vermont Bean has a huge variety of beans like Totally Tomatoes on tomatoes. I totally agree that Pinetree is good overall catalog fir the home gardener.

They end up being my number one too, though I also order from others. That free seed packet is a funny thing. Last year I got Thornburn's Terracotta Tomato and I wasn't even going to grow tomatoes but that inspired me to go for it and it worked out well. This year I keep getting the red lettuce as my free seed packet over & over. Hoping for something more intriguing. :-)

Thanks Chris, this is a wealth of info so thank you for providing all that! I’m an urban backyard gardener with interest in following permaculture practices, having started with backyard chickens 5 years ago with the goal of establishing a food forest for seasonal sustenance. I’m also asian so really appreciate your mention of Kitazawa seed co, from which I promptly ordered some seeds for vegetables popular in Asian cuisine. I’ve subscribed to your channel and look forward to more content & to watching it grow, as it should given its superb quality!

The one thing I see is that almost every seed company carries the same exact seeds at every place. Fedco is a place I look for specialty things because they are great for that,they seem to be the only seller I see with a wide selection of hard to find seeds. They however are not great with shipping or customer service. My go to is always Baker creek,Been shopping with them for ten years,never had a problem with germination,shipping,or customer service.

Johnny's is great. I never understood the price thing because when you get down to the individual seed vs the profit you get for the plant, the seed cost is always way way less than 1%. Like a seed ends up costing half a penny to produce a plant that earns you $5.

For affordable large volume of the standard open pollination you can buy large amounts for very little. They are from Minnesota I have sent many seeds from them to support a church work by a local church in Zambia Africa. Because of AIDS there are many orphans. I get a lot of seeds for a few dollars. This is Jordan seeds from Woodbury, MN.

In all these seed catalogs is there any seeds that are true GM mode?
@TheGoodEarthFarmChannel3 жыл бұрын
Theresa, for the most part the only GMO crops you'll see available in seed catalogs are just a few sweet corn varieties that have been altered to include BT and will be labeled. The main GMO crops grown in the US are field crops like soybean and corn. I believe there is an apple or two as well as a potato variety that have used by the commercial industry, but home gardeners don't have to worry about that, for now. And Gurney's is a popular seed company in Indiana to answer your other question. Thanks!

While I do not know this for a fact, it is not professional to say that Burpee has renamed varieties. As a Horticulturist I am completely offended by this. Burpee has provided excellent seed for over a hundred years (no I am not Burpee Staff). My comments are not affected by any relationship with Burpee, other than as a satisfied customer. Please do not denigrate a seed company when you are not sure of your facts. Thank you. Joan Prnage Prange's Florist
@TheGoodEarthFarmChannel2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, I understand your concern but I do give Burpee an overall positive treatment. They have definitely bred lots of great varieties over the years and have used branding as a marketing technique successfully for 100 years! For instance their white marigold contest where they took the winner bred by a customer and branded it "Burpee's Best Whites." Nothing wrong with that, that's just how they use their great name in seeds!
