I like cutting and chopping wood, I use the fireplace a lot. And it produces a ton of ash. Do you throw your ash away? You shouldn't! It has a lot of uses!

Shake a cup or two onto your humanure after using the outhouse. You'll find the smell to be much more tolerable.

We take some ash and put it in a coffee can. Add kerosene to make a paste. We use this as a fire starter. Wipe some paste on your wood and it will aide in starting the fire 👍

#12 ...extract potassium salts...to mix in for multiple uses. #12A ... hardwood ashes can also be used as an ingredient for making saltpeter, (basic cave man potassium nitrate) for use with black powder applications - ...whatever that may be...fireworks, black powder weapons, etc. ;-).

OK - so what you are really saying is that ---> Its time for me to kiss my ash... More uses for this gray gold. Liked your approach to the chopping - never seen that before, does seem it would increase strike power. But also think it would reduce my swing accuracy; and on bigger stuff it often takes numerous hits (at the same exact spot) to split it. I like using a chain-bungee combo to wrap the round, so that I get all my splitting done on it without having to stop to pick up pieces or try to balance smaller pieces before taking a swing.

Job sat on an ash heap and scraped his boils with a pottery shard because wood ash contains alkaline metals that have antiseptic qualities. Mixing wood ash with water, then filtering out the floaties yields a tea colored liquid called potash this is used in making lye soap and is a fairly strong antiseptic agent by filtering the "tea" until it is clear, you can get closer to a more stringent liquid very close to sodium hydroxide that can be used to unclog stopped up drains.

put ash into water and the water will become caustic,& can be used to clear out a clogged drain. when you put the ash into the water small bits of unburned charcoal will float to the top. this can be used to improve garden soil by keeping it loose. such charcoal can also be tossed back into the fireplace once it has been allowed to dry.

Suggestion: I know this Video is about wood ash, but I'm holding my breathe about you chopping wood... Lay a old used tire on top of your chopping block stump. Nail/Screw a few pieces of lathe on the sides of the chopping block and tire to keep it from shifting off center. The tire can be used to support tipsy wood being split. The split wood stays within the tire most of the time, so my old back doesn't have to bend and lift it to stack it. And lastly, the tire protects my ax/maul handle from hitting hard surfaces, if I were to miss or twist & slip the handle against a hard surface.

Do a soil test before adding wood ash to your compost. My soil has excessive potassium so i add gypsum (calcium sulphate) to the soil not wood ash. You can use wood ash to make an alkaline solution to turn corn into hominy. This makes it more nutritious as it liberates the vitamin B. This process is called nixtamalization and used by the Mexican indians to get more nutrition out of their corn.
