This video is made specially for the students, staff & alumni of Ruia college, Podar college & Wellingkar Institute situated at Matunga (C), Mumbai. Also for their friends who visit them outside the college, that is Ruia naka! This video is made by us who occasionally hang out at the naka but aren't alumni of Ruia college. Needless to say, we share the same emotion though!
When one talks of Ruia College, what comes to mind instantly is the Ruia Naka. This is a promenade built around a huge playground & it's famous katta, where one can sit back and stare across at the campus and the bustling street. That apart, what is really appealing about the naka is the interesting crowd, which comprises of all sorts of people right from creative field to doctors & from architects to engineers to lawyers! One can even spot national cricketers chilling out without many troubling them for autographs & selfies. One can never really feel lost here. Rather its this sense of belonging that makes this place so special, somewhat addictive if we may say so!
There is no dearth of hangout joints, street food and eateries for foodies. Closer to the college is the famous DP’s restaurant (old Durga Parmeshwari), the eternal favourite of almost all Ruia-ites. Check out the 'Mumbai's best pav bhaji', masala pav, chat as well as the wok hei, chinese dishes with an Indian touch.
For those who love chinese food, Chinaman will be your best bet. While those looking for oriental rolls and quick bites should visit Sherry’s counter of the same restaurant.
However, south Indian food lovers must not miss out on the amazing dosas and wada sambar at the legendary Mani’s (established in 1937). "Unlimited sambar & chutney" isn't the only reason why customers queue up at this eatery.
Our very own 'Jayesh Milk Bar'! Maharashtrian delicacies like Thalipith, kothimbir wadi that they serve is to die for! Seasonal items like Kanda bhaji prepared during monsoons is nothing less than heaven when relished with hot tea.
The Natyavalaya or the Theatre Group of Ruia College is one of the best and most popular among the theatre and acting circles among Mumbai colleges. Having bagged numerous prestigious awards, they boast of the finest actors, directors and artists that they have gifted to the country. Nishikant Kamat, Mahesh Manjrekar, Hariharan to name a few.
The Ruia Naka Ganeshotsav is an event that binds all the people together, from students to the 'naka members' to the shop owners. The action packed 10 days of Ganpati festival can't be described in words & can only be experienced!
Ruia naka isn't just a location, it's pure nostalgia to those who have spent some of the best days of their life hanging out with buddies for hours, days on end. No doubt this place has been a witness to wonderful memories of past generations and many more to come.

I belong to Matunga.So when I hear the name of Matunga,it takes me back to my King George scool and Ruia college days.Such wonderful memories.I passed out from Ruia in 1966 and visited my college after 50 years.The college and it's surroundings are the same what they were 50 years ago.I was so happy to see our favorite Mani's lunch home.We used to enjoy Mani's Dosa during my college days.My complements and thanks to those who have put in efforts to make this video.After watching it I felt being with my parents in my parental house...माहेर.I love my Matunga.I love my Ruia Naaka.

Lovely video. My memories about this Naka lasted for 2 years. Those were the years I used to study for my CA. Podar college used to open up 4 rooms on the ground floor for students pursuing professional qualifications. We used to study hard in Podar college classrooms and then eat Vada (with chutney or sauce) as option in Jayesh Milk Centre. Then one lovely Masala tea in glass tumbler. It used to be heaven for us after studying hard. At times we eat in Mani's. This Vada used to be so different compared to the Vada Pav (Vada) we find elsewhere. Crispy, spicy. amazing experience

Ruia naka has been a part of my growing up ,more over living in the neighborhood was an extension of friends from Naka. Not a single day goes by visiting our ruia naka. Love the way you present your views @amol parchure. Fantastic presentation.....looking forward to more from you.

Ruia naka was always the most important part of college. Saglyan aathvaninchi revision jhali.. Khoop mothe klakaar ithe lahanache mothe jhale. 1985 to 1992 (including MA) chya bharamsaat aathwani ahet. Thanks for a very well made video Amol. Keep it up.

I liked the video and it made me travel down memory lane....having studied in Ruia from 78 to 81 ..Durga Parmeshwari (now DP's) and Jayesh Milk Bar was my favourite...there was a small Irani hotel at the back...wonder if it is still there ? Haven't been there in the last 42 years but the memories remain fresh in the mind ..😉

My memories of Ruia Naka are priceless… almost from a different world.. the times spent on the Katta, at Jayesh, DP’s and Mani’s …. a lot of times we would hang out at A1 Traders, the only stationary shop right on Ruia Naka at that time. There would be a throng there for emergency birthday cards and Xerox but we visited just to say Hi to Homi, proprietor of A1 Traders. These are the people and their establishments that made Ruia Naka so unique.. things have no doubt changed a lot today. But that’s what adds to the nostalgia. This kind of place is needed in every locality. I’am so thankful we had our Ruia Naka

व्वा....खरच नाॅस्टॅलजीक! 1980 ते 1983-84 ला रुय्याला रोज जातयेत होते..... कितीही घाईत असले तरी नाक्यावरील सर्व मित्र-मैत्रींना हॅलो करूनच पुढे जायच....वेळ असेल तेव्हा मणीज्, डीप.पीज्, चायनीज ई मधे जात असु.....आज एवढी वर्ष झाली ती अटॅचमेंट आहेच आहे....आजूनही 60च्या घरातील आम्ही मित्र मैत्रिणी आवर्जून ठरवून भेटतोच 🥰🥰👌👍

Ruia Naka. In my days of schooling I think it was not that popular I suppose. I am recollecting 1970 when I was 12 y old schooling Antonio D'Silva in Dadar. I was born in Matunga at Dr. Vimla Shah's hospital on Nappoo road I think. Wonderful recollection. Left Matunga in 1978. We lived in the railway building adjacent to the ground and used to play hockey and football on the grounds. Ohh! So many memories.

I studied in Ruia between 1955 to 61. You can't miss Rajgriha on this Nappoo road, with its magnificent porch. Here Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar breathed his last on 6th of Dec. 1956. Thousands of his Dalit brothren thronged the road. Stayed there braving the cold weather, grieving over the great loss. We were greatly moved with the sight.

I spent 30 years in Ruia. Such a happening place! So much of unbeatable talent, fun with decent manner, safe, friendly place is Ruia and around! I joined Ruia in 1984. That time Jayesh had thalipeeth, batata vada-khobra chutney, and my most favourite, unique dish was Batata puri. I have seen Mahesh Manjrekar, as a thin boy, Ajay Phansekar regularly. Kshiti Jog, Sayaji Shinde, Sanjay Narvekar, Nishikant Kamat and many more, whose faces became famous, in later years. Mani's vada sambar! 😋😋 No one can make sambar. D Ps has fruit juices, milk shakes, cutlets, and many fancy food items. There was one stationery shop, I forgot the name, near Sherrys. Quality used to be very good of all the things they sold.

Introducing Kamal Kunj as residence of Hariharan left a bad taste and showed that Amol didn't do enough research. Actually it's the house of Joshi brothers, all reputed doctors in different fields. Not just that, he has shown Jayesh milk bar but didn't identify the building as the clinic of Talwalkar brothers, again reputed doctors.

Good. But you could have covered Matunga Gymkhana along with that, though you have shown the photo of the same. In case you aren't aware, Podar has produced Farookh Engineer, Dilip Vengsarkar (my senior), Ravi Sastry and Ruia gave us Sandeep Patil. Sunil Gavaskar was a regular at Matunga Gymkhana playing for Dadar Union.

DP च्या अगदी समोर असलेल्या दादर युनियन क्रिकेट क्लबने सुनील गावस्कर, वेंगसरकर, वासू परांजपे, विलास पाटील, के.नारायण पै, पांजरी इत्यादी प्रसिद्ध क्रिकेटपटू तयार केले. 5. दुसऱ्या क्लबमध्ये, डीपीच्या समोर, पारसी जिमखाना क्लब आहे, जिथे पॉली उमरीगर, रुसी सुरती, नारी कॉन्ट्रॅक्टर, फारूक इंजिनियर (पोडाराइट), बेहराम इराणी यायचे आणि खेळायचे. 6.आणखी एक क्लब "माटुंगा जिमखाना" ने शरद दिवाडकर इत्यादी खेळाडूंची निर्मिती केली. 7.मणी कॅफे 1937 मध्ये सुरू झाले. 8. अजित वाडेकर (रुईएट) यांनी माटुंगा जिमखाना मैदानावर (डीपीच्या समोर) श्री इंदुलाल यांनी आयोजित केलेल्या "इंदुलाल शिल्ड" (उन्हाळ्याच्या सुट्टीत खेळलेला) अंडर-आर्म क्रिकेट खेळला आहे.
