Geoff , Pomerol has a very definite earthy smell and taste. I have had many over the years and yes, it is very earthy because of the chalk in the wine slopes. A good reference is Chateau La Conseillante. Pomerol is general is very oily , earthy intense and can be very dry and still some good sugar content. So if the casks were of a very good harvest those tasting notes will be intensified. Because Pomerol is very low yield and really extremely high quality, it is my guess that those casks will have been very expensive. Remember that Chateau Petrus is from Pomerol and that is one of the most expensive wines on this planet. We do not know from which vineyard casks the PMC come from, but when i opened it, it was really Pomerol on whisky for me. So it was really on par with the PAC. Paulliac is so much more available, that i really would guess that it has a less expensive cask for sale. The PAC showcased the Paulliac ared too. So i am really impressed what Port Charlotte has to offer in this respect

I’m sorry, but there is no chalk / limestone in Pomerol. That’s a feature of St Emilion , especially around the town and east. The soils are iron rich gravels/ moraine - so that does produce greater depth of flavour and yes, earthiness to a degree. Having worked in Pomerol and own a vineyard built around making wines similar in style I’m a little obsessed with the place. And yes Petrus is very very good but bonkers for price, la Conseillante, Lafleur Petrus, Clinet and Gazin are all excellent type examples of the appellation. Maybe Geoff got the famous note of fresh plums as well - tres Merlot! Cheers

Thanks to both of you for the info. I quite liked the wine influence in the PMC in terms of the earthy and seemingly farmy qualities it imparted. But I felt the PAC had much more balance and a more restrained sweetness. Not sure how Pauilliac and Pomerol compare as wines, but think the Pauilliac worked better with the profile of PC. Perhaps I would have preferred the Pomerol as a lighter touch. 5 out of 9 years in casks... Long time. Cheers fellas! 🥃

As others have chimed in, yes Pomerol is a very earthy wine and can definitely feature “manure” or farmyard elements due to the soil type and also the prominent use of Cabernet Franc.

Hi Geoff, looks like Gerben already gave the main info on Pomerol. Just to add that Pomerol is usually made from Merlot grapes predominantly. Personally, I prefer my Pomerol and Port Charlotte in separate glasses. Cheers!

I love Bruichladdich and think they make fantastic products. While I do think the exploration series are high quality products they are just too expensive in my opinion. These are $150 and up in New Jersey. PC 10 is like $65 so just cant justify the price bump and typically younger whisky in the bottle. In my opinion these exploration releases should be like $100 and the Octomore should be like $150-$175. Because of these crazy price points I primarily stick with the core releases... too many better products out there at $150 for me

When you described this whisky, I recalled immediately MRC:01, you will find there these farmy, funky notes, polished horse saddle and manure, earthy and lots of berries. My fav of all cask exploration series so far, I gotta try PMC: 01 now ! Great review, thanks buddy!

I love this one. The Pomerol notes easily break through the peated malt but compliment and doesn't overpower. Only had SC and PAC to compare but very happy with this purchase. And I didn't get a canister here in the States either 😕

Hi Geoff, nice and competent review. I tasted the standard Port Charlotte 10yo some months ago (Bottle Code L164869 21/182 2021/07/05 08:35) but I really could not connect with it. This was the first bottle of Port Charlotte (and Bruichladdich whiskies in general) I tasted. When I uncorked the bottle, I brought my nose close to the bottleneck and I thought to be overwhelmed by the smell and the peat, like with other Islay single malts, instead I could hardly perceive the presence of the spirit. So I poured a dram in my Glancairn: nosing and tasting it I felt the whisky very restrained and contracted. I had to add a full teaspoon of water and wait half an hour to feel the smell and taste starting to open up and improve, allowing the hints of peat and oak to come forward. This experience is uncommon, it has never happened to me before, and even if I know that sometimes happens with certain whiskies, I have not read anywhere about this behaviour regarding Port Charlotte. Is it something that you have experienced too? Can it be a bad batch? Finally, I didn't find this whisky convincing and taking into account the rather high price in Italy (75 euros and above) I turned to other Islay whiskeys which satisfied me more.

New viewer here. Loved the review. My girlfriend just came back from iceland and managed to snag one of these bottles for me. Hesitated between the pmc and the 10 year as i havent tasted any of them. Despite the lower score it received, I'm really excited to taste it as my favorite flavor profile is a mix of peatiness and sweetness, something like ardbeg an oa or ledaig rhum cask. Great review and let's see you get back to normal soon. I bought a standard PC10 in 2022 and haven't bought any Cask Exploration PC's yet. I do have the Islay Barley 2012 but that's it so far. Looks like the PMC:01 is $150 near me. You as the reviewer would literally have to fall out of your chair drinking that for me to even CONSIDER spending that much on that bottle. I've spent as much on a few youngish/NAS bottles but they had other factors and better reviews.

As far as NAS whiskies go, the OLC, PAC, and SC have been well worth the money for me. However I'm lucky to be in Taiwan, where they're closer to USD $100. 🥃

Thanks for the great review. I had most of the previous releases and must say my fav is the OLC. It just blows me away every time I go back to it. How would you or any of the viewers compare this one to OLC ? When I purchased multiple bottles of the previous line up I believe I paid around $80 plus shipping from Europe but now everything has skyrocketed so I may pass on tis one as the American whisky scene has exploded and produced some great bonbon's, Ryes, and single malts for a much more affordable price point.

The only wine finished whisky I had was the Ledaig Rioja. I really like that one. I also think I do enjoy slightly more the sweeter whiskys ( and cask influence) then you do - so I wonder if this might be right up my alley. Although I can also imagine if that red berry jam note is too dominant and sweet it might be off-putting. Guess I should just try it in a bar first to make sure. I don't know...Im confused & undecisive 🫠😶 Either way, hope you get better soon my friend! Hope you can rest! Cheers and thank you for the review 🥃🥃

Cowshi*t?? Yes, yes… I love that smell (I’m originally from Ohio, U.S.). Such a great smell. However, I agree with you Geoff, that the bovine subproduct plays into the “funk” we all (should) love and appreciate. 🐄

I love this, also from Ohio originally and when I first starting learning about wine and then later got into spirits I promised myself I wouldn’t be the a**hole who said things like “smells like manure, maybe a rodeo, and I f***ing love it”… and yet I do now. And a part of me hates myself for it but it’s just who I am. Can’t argue with childhood nostalgia.

We have opposite preferences, PAC was my least favourite and PMC is tied in first place with MRC. I feel you may have the same issue with MRC for heavy cask influence. I got lots of summer bbq notes from this one and it has become my go to summer whisky

Yeah the SC is near the top of my list and imo it's got the lightest cask influence of the lot. The MRC may not end up being a favourite, but I do like a strong cask influence as long as the sweetness doesn't overwhelm. You never know. Cheers! 🥃
