My family dropped the patronymic altogether and they all took the name of their parish and added -quist.

I think that may have been what my family did as well! I've hit a bit of a road block with my Swedish history, so I'm not entirely sure, but their name is Rosenquist.

Fun fact for y’all: “quist” is a more “fine” spelling of the word “kvist” which meen “branch”. So Rosenquist meens “rose branch”.

HI Christa, I am listening to back episodes and I have a question about Swedish Naturalization records. I found my 2x great grandfather's index to Petition and it says he naturalized 23 October 1874 New York City. Where do I go to get the original records?

I've been doing exactly Swedish stuff for several months now and learned a lot of this - but it was great to have it all pulled together in one place, thank you, Crista! (I'm the person who doesn't know how to "start at the beginning"....I start in the middle and work in both directions at once! This sounds horrible, but it works for me....) I would appreciate some specific guidance on the "Clerical Survey" records - both how to search them, and then....how to understand those very cryptic notations!

when name of a wife is NILSDOTTER, What is the wife's maiden or father's last name?

In a patronymic system, Nilsdotter would be considered her "maiden" name. Her father's first name then would be Nils. His last name would be the first name of his father with -son. The surname typically changes every generation.

@@CristaCowan So Nilsdotter is the daughter (dotter) of Nils. Like Nils’ daughter. In Iceland they still have this system were one doesn’t change names when married.

I know for the US Census you can download blank forms for each year, is there something similar to that for some of the Swedish records, ideally translated?
