Why is it all aikido 'masters' are always little guys, out of shape guy or women, are there any ripped top aikidoka? Thanks

James C Because Aikido doesn't require strength and muscle. It's got nothing to do with that. Your hands and arms are merely the control and connecting points to set up a technique. You use your whole body to unbalance your opponent and throw or pin them once you've established control. It's like pushing a shopping trolley. To move it you don't pull it in towards you then push it out again. You take hold, lock your arms in front of you on the handle then walk forwards. The trolley moves because your whole body pushes it. Your arms just connect you to the trolley. If you use strength and muscle then you might use the shapes of Aikido, but you're not doing Aikido.

James C If you keep the attackers energy heading in the intended direction by trapping or blending with via a controlled point, then you can quickly redirect their energy to where you need it to go in order to unbalance them. As soon as someone is off balance they subconsciously grab onto you harder so they don't fall over, and forget that they were trying to attack, or that they have hold of you and not vice versa. At this stage it becomes easier to throw them or pin them, no matter their size and strength because technique and correct application will overcome strength. Using your whole body against someone whose balance is broken is then easy as they no longer have their strength to use.

James C Absolutely, and that's why Yoshinkan train at a slower pace to other styles, so that each of these various check points can be mastered before attempting it all full speed. It looks fake as a result but it isn't. When you've felt yourself be thrown across a room but barely felt anything it's an incredible feeling. But in practise it relies on a training partner giving you the right energy or you have nothing to redirect. If they pull you go with them, if they push then you pivot and move them around you. You never go backwards in Aikido or you risk losing your own balance and then you have to rely on strength at which point you're no longer doing Aikido. I hope all of this has given you a better understanding of Aikido.

All of this only works on compliant ukes... Why is it we never really see aikido up against other martial arts such as boxers or fighters from MMA?... I know it would be a completely different and none of these "masters" wouldn't look anywhere near as good as their ukes make them.... THAT is the real truth....

To put it simply, aikido is a martial art from samurai schools originally applied on battlefields to defeat the enemy with weapons and not a combat sport with rules and a referee. is not comparable, it's like trying to compare a game of chess and football, they are different disciplines which each have their own functioning and principles.

@@towag I know what I’m talking about, I practice this discipline with a martial and realistic teacher unlike some. In the video it’s just a demonstration of discipline like another discipline would do and luckily the people who attack know how to follow and fall otherwise they would have problems, Don’t confuse complacency with cooperation, which is unfortunately a problem in some aikido styles, I agree, but that’s why you have to choose your aikido style and the teacher that suits you. it’s not the martial art that makes the man, it’s the man that makes the martial art," it’s just my perspective and my experience in that discipline.

@@mrblaize1997 So do I after 50 years of martial arts, and not just Tomiki aikido but judo, boxing, karate Wing Chun gung fu and being a doorman in my past employment ... I agree its the man and not the art... But most "styles" of aikido are impractical and just don't work being its all kata based with no resistance training...

@@towag You are not wrong some styles yes, I have practiced also other disciplines: judo; kempo and try other styles, I have seen a lot of technical similarities and basic principles, it’s not for nothing if some styles of aikido is taught by the police and the army in some countries like japan for example, in any case what is sure is that in my entourage in my club for example, I know people who unfortunately had to use it to defend themselves or help people in difficulty on the street and they knew how to apply it in a real situation, in my aikido style we apply the basic principles " irimi; atemi" an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/goa5hoh5mNGMncU and www.leotamaki.com/2018/03/aikido-ou-l-illusion-de-maitriser-un-adversaire-sans-le-blesser.html
