We constructed a sandcastle on the beach. Unfortunatly, we built it too close to the shoreline, and surge of waves came in during high tide and washed it all away...two whole hours of work gone in a few moments. Fortunately no one was injured except the pride of my daughter whom to this day is still struggling with the drama that unfolded that day at the beach.

They overestimated the strength of the plexiglass . They may also have underestimated the chance that a second oil/gas crisis would reduce heating in the surrounding atrium (this was the first winter after gas imports became problematic). A few details: 1. The acrylic construction details were kept secret by the specialist supplier . 2. Although surrounded by a hotel, the tank and elevated were both part of a general "fish zoo" next door, with a special route for paying zoo guests to visit the 1000 to tropical tank . 3. Fish zookeepers rushed in to save as many fish as possible .

My wife used to work with a lot of Chinese businessmen. They won't go on the record about it, but the stories they told us about how/why they would have failed/bad construction were fascinating. It has a lot to do with their culture being expert on finding scapegoats and that being an acceptable culture with them, combined with one thing: executives above you in their culture, expect only one thing from you when they call: assurance that everything is going great. If you do not make those mouth sounds to them, they find someone who will always make those mouth sounds to them. They don't care about reality. They only care about the reports.
@DieFlabbergast

I've heard this sort of comment on modern Chinese culture many times. What I would like to know is: how far back does this go? Did this sort of attitude/custom develop under Communist rule, or does it go back to pre-revolutionary China, maybe to the 19th century or earlier?

Similar to America. Remember the Surfside apartments that collapsed in Florida not too long ago and several people were killed? Very sad and avoidable but to maintain buildings it costs money, and the American system values profits over people.
@mikeg3439

@@powertrip6426 Taking something that almost never happens, then saying it is similar to something that happens sadly way too often somewhere else, is not what I would call a fair comparison. There is a reason tens of millions of people in China desperately want to immigrate to the USA, and no one other than people with very specific job opportunities (which are drying up) wants to move to China.

In the 1980’s, a paper manufacturer discovered very fast growing trees in Brazil’s jungle. So they constructed a floating paper mill and sailed it deep into Brazil, because it was deemed impossible to build on the actual site. In the mean time, the company’s scientist reported back that the fast growing trees lacked the pulp needed for paper. So the trees were useless in paper making. The paper mill was left abandoned to rust and rot in Brazil. The equivalent of US$1 Billion was spent.

The original design had long rods suspended from the ceiling. The upper deck was to rest on (large) nuts partway down, and the lower deck on nuts at the bottom. This would have required most of the length of the rods to be threaded, and the construction company didn't want to deal with it. So the design was changed. The upper deck was on a short rod, and the lower deck was *suspended from the upper deck* by another rod. The joint that was supposed to hold the upper deck was then holding the full weight of both walkways. The original design was substandard. The new design could barely hold the empty walkways. Add a bunch of people, the joints holding the upper walkway let go, and both levels pancaked into the lobby.
@EndlessSurprisesSD
@EndlessSurprisesSD Жыл бұрын
This started my interest in architecture. Then I got more interested in Victorian houses. I'll never forget when I first heard about the skywalk disaster, and they talked about the rods. Even though I had recently graduated high school without physics courses, I realized that would never work. It blows my mind that they were "too lazy" to thread a single rod.

When I arrived in Boston for my first semester at a Famous Music School in 1975, I asked some new acquaintances where they were heading with lawn chairs and a cooler full of beers. Why, we're going to see the Show! they said. The Show turned out to be watching large plates of glass - windows - falling out of the newly constructed John Hancock Tower, something they did with alarming frequency. Today, the 'Cock is an iconic landmark in Boston. It's beginnings were a bit sketchy, though. Thankfully, no one died from this construction, ummm, anomaly. Nowhere near the tragedies mentioned in this vid, but a reminder that construction mistakes aren't always a 3rd world problem...

What about the collapse of the Hard Rock Hotel in New Orleans? So many construction mistakes. Not to mention city inspectors who submitted that they inspected the site, but were proven to have never (NEVER) appeared on the site. In spite of a number of people, including a site engineer, taking pictures of bent beams and numerous materials issues, and being ignored. Or the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas using none of the recommended fire safety devices (no smoke alarms, fire suppression, etc) so when a fire broke out on the main floor, the smoke filled the entire hotel via the HVAC system. Also the stairwell doors auto locked trapping people escaping inside the stairwells, where they died. Eighty-five deaths. Hundreds of injuries. All because a hotel cheaped out and didn't take fire safety or lives of their customers seriously.

I dunno, I don't think I'd consider the Intempo Tower a construction mistake. It's hardly a mistake to start building something in a boom, only to watch the bubble burst and your money evaporate before you've finished. It wasn't a mistake that someone made a false claim about the lack of elevators. It was possibly a mistake that the second lot of constructors hit the wall while trying to resurrect it, without fully appreciating the magnitude of what it was going to take

Calling the Tower of Pisa one of the biggest construction mistakes in the world is utterly absurd, and putting it at Number Two is even worse. If anything, its construction was marked by a series of almost miraculously good choices that enabled them to overcome the intrinsic limitations of the project. Today we tend to chalk these decisions up to just dumb luck, but I think that's kind of condescending. These were smart people, who understood that they had a problem, and came up with good practical and creative ways around them. They periodically stopped construction, which gave the ground a chance to compact and become stronger. They added curvature as they went up, which greatly reduces the strain on the bottom floors. They used lighter building materials and voids to lessen the weight, using the heavy marble only for a thin veneer. They observed how the tower reacted to what they were doing and adapted accordingly. It's only been in modern times (starting late 19th century) that big mistakes have been made. And the thing has been standing for close to a millennium, so they clearly did something right. How many of today's buildings do you expect to be around after that much time? Other than digging too shallow of a foundation, they don't seem to have done anything wrong, and even that was was conformant to standard practices of the time. It was just that the ground, which superficially appears solid enough, is actually too soft to support a tall tower. But they had no way of knowing that. What's so impressive about this structure is how they turned that unexpected initial misfortune into such a great triumph. This is an absolutely gorgeous building, as is the whole grassy piazza around it. And the one in Spain doesn't seem to have any problems at all. The company building it just ran into financial trouble, so it took a while to complete. Do you understand how many centuries the great cathedrals of Europe took to build? It's okay for a building to take a while to be fully constructed.

lemme tell u some more wonders that the world still doesnt recognise as architectural marvels: ❄Manikarnika temple in India, has a 9.4 degree tilt ( nearly 5.4 degree more than pisa tower) and is also a few meters taller and centuries older than the leaning tower of pisa, but bcz of the location of pisa tower in Europe, the world recognises it as a world wonder rather than actual one ❄Brideshwar Mahadev Temple is India is several meters tall without the use of any binding agent, the structure stands on only interlocked stones for centuries and with a single 80 tonne boulder piece on its top, and no technology in todays time can put a 80t rock on several meters high in one piece, and Indians did this centuries ago ❄The famous Ram Setu that connects India and Sri Lanka as a bridge was built 100s od centuries ago with a rock that wasn't found in the regions within 100s of KM of radius from the engineering marvel ❄The Kailash Temple in India is a one single massive structure carved into a mountain with no single joint or crack in it, its a whole mountain carved into a temple, and many more 🌹🔥 India alone has more surprising and awesome engineering marvels, than the whole world combined

Only 10 years for trapping 1500 people under rubble??!! Really!? Years ago an African American homeless man stole $100 from a bank branch. He turned himself in next day saying he was just hungry but he wasn’t that person to rob others. Returned the money. Got 12 years! Maybe this is why some people take justice into their own hands.

If I understood correctly the "Deutsche Bank" building in Berlin's "coldwar-wall-area" was a mistake, because the ventilation ideas did not work. But perhaps they rebuilt the systems for ventilation. The originally idea was a glass facade outermost and there the air could circulate, then the inner glass / steel wall had openings/windows for ventilation. My memory and understanding of this may be at fault. Google does not help.

I've always secretly despised the Leaning Tower of Pisa. They abandoned it because it was crooked and would cost more to clean up than it was worth. Then they needed it so badly 200 years later that they couldn't just start from scratch. Even if it was straight it's nothing special, crooked it's an eyesore. So many beautiful things to see in Italy, I hope they have really good food nearby this landmark to make it worthwhile. Is it just me or is it an ancient joke?

It is no wonder the Radisson aquarium burst. Everyone knows you cannot use just acrylic panels for such a construction - it needs to have Transparent Aluminium panels, at the very least.

It's not necessarily a big mistake, but my parents lived in an apartment building up in Halifax Canada that had an empty pool on the roof. The engineers had accounted for the weight of everything needed for the pool except the water so it had to stay empty.

It's a relief that they caught the mistake just in time. That's scary. Did you know that a reason most cruise lines have a very shallow pool is simply because of the weight? Only recently did technology improve to where they could install two pools on cruise ships. I believe Virgin was one of the first to have two pools on its ships.
