For anyone asking about the thickness of the clear coat after the treatment, the next step for this car was our full paint protection film coverage which prevents stone chips, scratches and swirl marks, meaning the clear coat is safe!

Car manufacturers would never remove orange peel it is just a free optional add on in applying clear coat and the way it cures. Great video guys. Car looks super.

Very nice job it’s a huge undertaking to get paint perfect. Anyone complaining about clear coat being removed that car probably gets washed and waxed twice a week so it won’t mater. Paint lasts forever if it’s looked after. I just finished restoring 2 vintage dodges and it took over a week on each car to rub it back to get the paint like that. Great idea fine lining the high points.

Nick Bloodoff I couldn’t agree more. Block sanding combined with orbital sanding (no more than 5mm stroke) is all I’ve ever used. Work back to 3000-5000 grit and it shouldn’t need much more than a polish to finish out. I can’t wrap my head around why he went from a proper orbital sander on the first stage to a large throw DA on the second. So much unnecessary work.

Now that's what I call lateral and longitudinal thinking. Masking off all the swedge lines, for example, to prevent sanding through the edges is a very simple but highly effective method. The design and quality of the DAs and machine polishers enable the kind of precision aimed at and achieved in this tutorial. Having the right tools and equipment combined with a fine eye for detail and plenty of patience are key elements in achieving a flawless finish. I wonder whether the secret stage involves baking the car at a certain temperature after a certain (ceramic?) coating has been applied and removed to create a protective barrier and lasting finish.

*Luxury cars do not hold their value.* Luxury buyers want the latest and greatest tech and gadgets. This is the reason their value plummets and 85% of luxury cars you see on the road are leased -- specially German brands. This is also why you can by a 7 year old $100K S Class for 20-25% of it's value while a same year same mileage Honda Accord only dropped 50% of it's value while retaining it. As years go by from there, the Honda will hit residual value while the luxury cars continues to drop. Fact.

Man that’s gotta feel so good tearing into a 100+ thousand dollar car paint job. Back when I first started in racing I was in control of 2 prototype AudiR8s before the road car came out, easily 2 million dollars trusted in my hands to grind on and repair carbon fiber then paint. Just felt so good and scary knowing that people entrust you with the responsibility then believing enough in myself to not completely screw it up trying to pretend like it was nothing more than a practice hood from the junkyard and best yet is when you pull it off and the owner (rest in peace you’re one of the greatest men I ever had the honor to know ) comes in and says great job with a smile, looking back it’s still humbling. I scored that job right out of tech school which is why I was so scared and doubted my abilities but pushed on. Anyway killer job brother looks amazing, so much depth to the color and clean, absolutely beautiful!!!

From the factory there is not a lot of clear on them but never had any problems as long as you pay attention. I would rather be careful tho and tape it but it’s a waste of time in my opinion.

Orange peel is a certain kind of finish that may develop on painted and cast surfaces, even screen protectors.[1] The texture resembles the surface of the skin of an orange. Gloss paint sprayed on a smooth surface (such as the body of a car) should also dry into a smooth surface. However, various factors can cause it to dry into a bumpy surface resembling the texture of an orange peel. The orange peel phenomenon can then be smoothed out with ultra-fine sandpaper, but it can be prevented altogether by changing the painting technique or the materials used. Orange peel is typically the result of improper painting technique, and is caused by the quick evaporation of thinner, incorrect spray gun setup (e.g., low air pressure or incorrect nozzle), spraying the paint at an angle other than perpendicular, or applying excessive paint. In some situations, such as interior house paint, the orange peel texture is desirable. In this case, a texture paint is generally applied with a spray gun. The texture is then painted over with the appropriate color. When painting walls, orange peel can also develop by using a roller with too little paint or too thick a paint and the surface dries before the texture can level.

Some orange peel on a paint job is good. The orange peel helps diffract the sun light. When you cut and buff a paint job flat the clear coat acts like a magnifying glass and will degrade the base coat underneath. I’ve flat sanded several show cars over the years and I’ve always told the customers to keep them out of the sun as much as possible. Flat sanding a car looks awesome but it’s not something you would want to do to your daily driver that gets parked outside all the time.

Which grits did you go through ? Looked like 2000 grit or a little above on that first pass on the clearcoat but I would like to know exactly

I can see the amount of work and dont get me wrong it turned out real nice but I much rather spray another clear coat after all that labor ..thicker and smooth as well with a flow coat

Wet sand by hand with soft block and 1200 grit ...no orange peel or burn through. Three coats of clear.

That mirror finish will only last until the average first wash then it's back to machine polishing. A clear coat will only take so much before its worn through..

Cutting back the factory clear and polishing it won’t give you that rich gloss it once had. Doesn’t matter what product you use and how much you polish it. It would of been better to pay a few thousand more and have it flow coated with good high quality clear.

Curious to know the grits used during the dry and wet stages. Imagining dry at around 1600 and then working down to about 2500 wet???

Cutting corners on the initial paint job one would assume. Sanding between coats is an extra few steps.
