Beautiful conversion work sir. I have a top flite 182 kit still in the box and a 1/4 scale set of plans of a Cessna 140 that i am going to convert to a 140A. Bought the short kit from kit cutters, cowl from fiberglass specialty, additional balsa from National. John from Hayden, Idaho

Nice overview on your excellent conversion! And you are exactly right on what a correctly tuned gyro will contribute toward scale flight realism. Well done
@flybuilderАй бұрын
With the gyros marketed the way they are in plug and play foamies as an autopilot of sorts- I think many seasoned rc folk don’t realize (or refuse to acknowledge) the realism it can bring to scale flying. Glad to hear you get it! I first added one to a squirrelly 3D bipe years ago and quickly realized how it not only tamed the airplane, it made it look and feel super smooth in bad air. Still love flying 3D without a gyro but adding one to a big cub or a war bird or any scale airplane makes it fly so much more realistic. Almost the opposite of what many rc people would think. Doesn’t feel fake or as though you’ve relinquished control to AI- just makes it more stable- like full scale. Thanks for your response!

I fly a 185 and wish mine looked as good as yours. You really nailed it. I also had a 180 for fifteen years. (sold the 185 recently) Cheers, Lee

I’ll bet you were sad to see it go. Always wanted to own a 185. Never happened. Oh well i’ll focus on the bright side- the RC 185 is a lot cheaper to operate…Cheers!

Yep, had to give up flying after 42 years. Got my license the same day they walked on the moon. I built models as a kid and a few years ago I built a real nice electric but gave it away with my equipment. He could fly it well. Today modeling is way over my head. lol You have some great pieces. Lee

Nice way of converting 'omni-vision' windows back to the original 'Fastback' fuselage! Love the fact you installed CORRECT position lighting. The battery door handle looks like a fuel strainer for 'sumping' the tanks 🙂 If you had added the 'V' bracing in the windscreen and 4 'I' bolts to the top of the wing, it would look like a convertible land to float plane 🙂 As you say, most of it is in the 'Optics" to the viewer! Great work! 🙂

Awesome 185!. Been waiting on one, that looks the part, for 30 plus years. Your design is right on, and really looks the part. Just beautiful!! Boy, do youhave my mind going now. Built the 182 as soon as the kit was released in the 1990's, and it's a very, very nice flying model.
@flybuilderАй бұрын
You will thoroughly enjoy the build. I say go for it. If you want another brand new kit, I have one. I paid way too much on eBay for it so I might be asking too much also but if you want it, let me know.

Wow it looks great, thanks for the video. I have had one of these kits under my bench for a few years but have never really been excited about building it. Now I have seen this I am super keen to get started and do this conversion. Thanks again for the inspiration, look out 2025 this will be my next project.

So glad to hear that! I was so jacked after I finished mine I wanted another kit. Couldn’t find one anywhere. Then one popped up on eBay and I actually bought it. Paid way too much and it’s just sitting in my shop but may do it again one day!

Very cool! Ive been building since 1982 and built 3 of these Topflite kits of the 81" 182. Very nice plane and kit. I was looking around for an 185 also and this is an fantastic conversion and yes your right, not a whole lot of work for us long time builders! hehehe. Thanks for posting. I'm actually working on an 1/4 scale cub float plane which I'm making it into an Super Cub. Great job on your conversion. Love it!.

Nice job sir. When color matching paint for covering with paint chips take it outside in the sun light. You will be surprised at the difference between in and outside shade differences

I built 2 of the stock kit, I think it is as scale as any model ever kitted and sold to the public.
@scotabot7826Ай бұрын
I agree with that 1000 percent, and they fly like a dream if built correct and light.

Hey, that kit looks familiar. Great job on that one! I see you bought my buddy Dave's p-51 nice conversion to electric. I'm doing the TF P-51 with the xpr60cc.
@flybuilderАй бұрын
Did I buy that kit from you near Fall City? You have the giant P-38? Yes- Dave a great guy. Had a blast converting and flying the P-51. Have lots of prop info for you for that set up if you’d like it

Use the Badass 26x10 on that TF P-51 build. Scale diameter, incredible prop rip, static thrust isn’t bad, top speed is good, and motor will survive! Watch my flight vid if you haven’t already

Nice conversion. I prefer electric over gas/nitro. I immediately caught the two misfires. On 6S, I knew it had to be about 500KV. A quick calculation on my iPhone tells me that the setup is very close to optimum. I use Spektrum's AS3X/SAFE receivers in pretty much everything.

I prefer Nitro... But you did a great job. pretty good amount of throw on the elevator!
@scotabot7826Ай бұрын
Yes, as the only thing this model needs is a .91 4-stroke to fly well. People were putting in 1.20's 4-strokes back in the day, and that's just as silly as you can get!
@gewglesuxАй бұрын
@@scotabot7826 Agreed.. Nice big Saito, Thunder tiger, OS..!! I forgot the other big 4- strokes..

Brother, would you consider sellings exact copies of the size and outline of the vertal Stab. and rudder. I would gladly purchase a copy. Can you also tell us the exact carbon gear you bought? All the rest is self explanatory. You got me going.
@flybuilderАй бұрын
Hahaha. It is a fun thought right? The landing gear was a struggle. I ended up buying a set off Amazon from some no name overseas manufacturer. Trying to keep the scale look, the carbon gear I bought were rather thin to match the spring steel on a 185. They did not tolerate punishment well as after a couple dozen flights one side began to delaminate. I went back on Amazon to buy another set and, they are no longer available and the link is gone. I spent days trying to find another that was the right measurement and I could not. They are either too long, too short, too wide, wrong angle or something. Someone out there hopefully will find some that work. You could always go aluminum or even steel, but that might be a little heavy. My plans are a mess. All ripped up and full of glue. Not sure I would get you a copy, but I’d be happy to if it were possible? Maybe I can throw a bunch of tape measures on it and snap photos and send it to you.
