Another one I see is that people say that Zutara is problematic because Zuko is from the fire nation which; which is responsible for the destruction of Katara’s culture. Which I don’t disagree but Zuko himself isn’t responsible for it and has shown to want to dismantle fire nation supremacy in the series afterwards. IN FACT just due to the fact that Zuko is taller and is only 3-4 years older than Aang when Katara is sympathetic and acts motherly towards zuko in the cave, people see it as flirting, but when she acts motherly towards aang it appears like a big sister/big brother relationship. Its just who Katara is. I have a few points about the whole thing though: 1. Katara goes through stages of liking aang: Season 1: Curiosity (due to Fortune teller) Season 2: Interest but in the back of her mind (due to Ba sing see and Azula trailing them she wanted to focus on the mission) Season 3: actual crush/love interest ( but feels guilty bc its during a war they need to focus on, until the end when she can finally express her feelings) She also has relationship issues because of Jett: This causes her to dislike those who lie, deceive, or betray her. IF Zuko didn't betray Katara in the cave and give in to his trauma and stay with the fire nation, something totally could have happened! But alas Zuko broke her trust and betrayed the gaang. In that moment she saw just another firebender who wants to control the world (even if that wasn't his intention). In chapter 3, Aang showed bravery, danced with Katara, kissed her, and genuinely cared for her. which led to her forming real feelings for him. Plus she was also driven by the notion that she might end up with him because of what the fortune teller said in season 1. Overall, Kataang started as a brother/sister vibe BUT as aang grew physically and mentally that dynamic shifted to become an actual relationship (just look at the comics, aang is taller and more mature). Zutara could have happened bc they understand eachother's trauma with the firenation but, all hope of it ended with his betrayal, in the end they mended their differences but due to Katara now seeing aang as a love interest, her and zuko are merely just friends. In the comics Katara and Zuko have different views on how situations need to be handled so they arent AS compatible as people hoped they were. (only similarities was trauma and potential comfort with trauma)

Narratively, it would make MORE sense if Katara (instead of Mai) went in and surprised Zuko and helped him put on his clothes he's struggling with because of his new scar (caused by yet another family member). Not only did Zuko get that new scar for Katara. But unlike his first scar ( also caused by family)-he doesn't care because it saved Katara. Which is a big deal-given his prior complex of the 1st. It also would symbolically show Katara is helping him heal from emotional scars rather than trying to heal the physical ones just by being there for him. And it would give more symmetry to that s2 scene of Katara just trying to heal away his scar-after they both opened up about their moms. Katara I believe is also the only girl to touch his scar (another love interest in s2 tried and he literally grabbed her hand before she could do so). Also , the dialogue from the scene makes sense for zutara . Zuko: "so does that mean you don't hate me anymore?". Katara: "I think it means... I actually kind of like you. ". Also, like , don't get me started on how Mai was a representation of his attachement to the fake prince he thought he was supposed to be for his father. And she doesn't even share Zuko's values...so it would just make more sense for him to stay single than with her. Or the fact even in s3 they kept on bringing up the fact Katara literally is mothering Aang (and even Aang says she's like a mother to him in s3/ and right before the finalie the play compares them to siblings). like ...cave of 2 lovers paralleling zutara/ship-baiting aside . Why have Aang literally say she treats him like a mom- in the same season they get together romantically. That's weird af. I really do think zutara was supposed to happen (or some writers wanted it)and Aang was supposed to stay single at the end of s3. which is why even in the finalie episodes they keep zutara together for almost the entirety and they even call her his "girlfriend" at a restauraunt- and he yells she isn't. Which paralleled his past date where he yelled "she's not my girlfriend".

But some ( a lot ) of writers wanted zutara and almost succefully pushed it, but it was the creator that had the final say in it, and that was what happened. But because they had the final say kind of late, we still have a lot of zutara scene ( that what I think happened )

Zuko and Katara ending up together could’ve been a great plot line and LoK. I could only imagine the kind of history and plots they coulda made for the creation of Republic city and other places in the avatar universe. I think the characters and plot line could have had a larger dynamic if the Fire Lord married a Southern Water Tribe (peasant lol) master water bender. UGHHHHH so much potential for great storylines in the future!

I do wish Zuko and Toph's friendship had been expanded on a lot more. The way she vouches for him and is the first to trust him, the fact that they're from similar backgrounds and can relate to being from materially privileged but emotionally neglectful/abusive families, the way Zuko is so tightly wound and Toph has MASSIVE gremlin energy. I mean the potential was there to set Toph up as the little sister Zuko deserved and the writers wasted it. (Bonus points for Zuko being insecure about his appearance and Toph being too blind to care)

Also.. - Zuko takes the necklace when overlooking a sunset on the water (still trying to please his father) - Zuko overlooking the moon (during crucial scenes when contemplating his decisions) - Katara looking into the sunset during the Southern Raiders - "you rise with the moon. I rise with the sun" - "perhaps I can restore something you've lost".. Zuko being the one to give her closure with her mom's killer (Aang giving her the replacement necklace and not understanding what she needed to heal (although Aang does get Katara's necklace back but at some point but they mention Zuko and jokingly says to give him a kiss lol) - Katara forgiving Zuko and Katara giving him advice when he faces his uncle again to ask for forgiveness - Zuko letting go of anger and relearning fire bending and her letting her anger go of him after S. Raiders/blood bending and moral duality - Tui & La. Ying and Yang. - Blue spirit mask from his mom and betrothal necklace (Ursa banished, Kya sacrificed in order to protect them) - Blue spirit and Painted Lady - Zuko gets his scar from his father, a symbol of shame for a long time. Get another scar from his sister while protecting Katara while doing the right thing. - "the avatar gives zuko hope... hope is something you give yourself" + “But I haven't lost hope. I still believe that somehow, the Avatar will return to save the world". Both initially seeing the Avatar as hope for different reasons but him finding his own destiny and her getting her own agency rather than waiting for a savior - also title sequence is Katara's speech and the ending title is the song that comes up for Zuko and Aang when the meet the firebending masters and the entire show is book ended by a speech from Zuko when he becomes firelord - Katara and Zuko losing Sokka and Iroh in the same ep - aaand June being a Queen and June Pippinpaddleopsicopolis???? Katara yelling at Zuko in the CC was needed for both of them. Katara had been carrying all that anger over her mothers death for years. Whether he was at fault or not at that moment didn't matter she finally had someone from the other side to take her anger out on.(also he was the villian) Doesn't make it right, but I feel people are more forgiving of Zuko's rude/bad behavior towards others because of trauma than Katara. Also Katara mentioning her mother is what causes Zuko to take Katara on their little field trip. I think he recognized the survivor guilt in her. That moment in the CC stayed with him long after it was over.

The incident of the crystal catacombs holds so much meaning and it goes even deeper . Katara leaving him there was one of nudges which drove him to betray everyone. She had raised up his hopes , his hopes of being free of this assault , to be free and control his own Destiny . The scar was a big part of his life , a constant reminder of his shamfulness , and when he got a beacon of hope , a hope that he could get better . Aang came and she chose aang over him , they abandoned him , he was again the second choice , the abandoned choice . Ofcourse Katara doesn't know the way in which she affected Zuko . But I belive that having his hopes crushed , having the fact that he could be rid of the scar crushed was a big thing for him . He had shown his most vulnerable side to someone , allowed himself to be weak by letting her touch him but she turned her back against him . And then when the opportunity that he could get his honor back , secure a place somewhere in the world , be accepted at least somewhere , he dove for it . If Katara would've helped him , maybe things would've been a bit different. (But personally I think that zuko needed to go through the 1st half of s3) . And I'm just giving how I perceived the scene . I was really really sad during that and seeing him so vulnerable was heartbreaking. And yes , zuko and Katara do bond over their mothers . It simply beautiful to see that Katara had been the first to touch his scar and he had been the first to whom she opened up about her mother . We've never seen Mai touch his scar or Katara tell aang about her mothers story even though Mai and aang are supposed to be their love interests . It kind of a bizarre choice to make and she told him when she hadn't even forgiven him .

@@sparkyblue7016 I have a slightly different take. One of the overall themes of ATLA is hope. I think that even though Katara doesn't heal his scar she gave Zuko hope. Even though he wasn't there to see it, he knows that she healed Aang. He knows how powerful Katara was/is so he has faith in Katara's healing abilites. When he tells his father that the Avatar isnt dead he has to be thinking about Katara and their time in the CC. Katara healing Aang is part of the catalyst of Zuko's change, although his change is 100% on him. Mai never once acknowledges any of Zuko's traumas in a meaningful way, she just brushes them off. In fact throughout the show she's pretty dismissive of him. Katara on the other hand offers him comfort when he's distressed as he does her.

That something bad will happen to you again if you go to another war meeting. I don't know what the writers were thinking having them as endgame . Thank goodness they don't end up together in the comics , I'm going to be seriously disappointed if I come to knwo that zuko and Mai get married . They both deserve better .

Omg I Love that video. Sneezy brought up points I never even thought of. Not only did she justify Zutara in a romantic sense, but also in a narrative, symbolic, and thematic sense. I was like "wow, I knew it was good, but I didn't know it was THAT good!" I was never always a Zutara shipper - that was a development during my mid-teens - but I was never really a Kataang shipper either. Since I was a kid, I kinda always saw Katara as Aang's big sister, so you can imagine my utter shock seeing them kiss in the finale lmao. After rewatching the show more times than I can count, I tried to see them more in a romantic sense, and I did find a few scenes of them to be cute. But it never grew into more than temporary cuteness for me, and Katara's motherly behavior ultimately squashed it. It never felt like something I could take seriously nor imagine long-term. Kataang has always been something I've fundamentally disagreed with, even if I couldn't fully understand why. And now I fully understand why lol. But even watching the finale when I was little, it just felt odd seeing something I thought was clearly one-sided being shoved in my face when I thought the ending scene was supposed to be about the Gaang as a whole. Since I was younger, I've always cared more about a good story with substance rather than a fluffy (flimsy) romance put on for laughs and coos, so I guess it was natural for me to take a liking to Zutara as I got older. Plot first, romance second. If a romance just so happens to enhance the plot, now that's just icing on the cake. Sneezy bringing out all the arguments centered on storytelling as a whole really spoke to me, and brought me from just thinking Zutara could've been "kinda cute" to knowing they would've been the best choice for each other and the story as a whole. Now I just take the voice actors of Zuko and Katara shipping Zutara as it being canon lol!

DID YA'LL SEE THE SIMILARITIES BETWEN THE CAVERN SCENE AND THE SECRET TUNNEL SCENE? The scene in the crystal coves brings a striking resemblance to the ~secret tunnel~ scene. - The lovers separated by war, their colors were literally red and blue - The crystals (duh) But what makes this scene different than the first and more important? The difference between Katara's reactions. In the ~secret tunnel~ scene, Katara kisses Aang (a physical act) and runs off like it's nothing. In the cavern scene, however, she bonds with Zuko, understanding his trauma, understanding that they share a moral compass. When Katara leaves, this time, she lingers, and you could see how much it hurt her to part ways with him, the only person who truly understood her. She made an emotional connection, which cements itself deeper than any physical act can. Aang and Katara's relationship lies with pretty declarations of love and physical gifts. Zuko and Katara's relationship would lie in the wounds they carry, and the sense of peace and calm they bring each other. That's why Katara was so hurt when he betrayed her. The only person she thought could understand her left.

Your comment on Yin and Yang is the reason why I ship Zutara. Both are complete opposites in case of their elements, nationalities, upbringing, etc. but in case of their personalities they are very similar and that does represent Yin and Yang, Tui and La, the sun and the moon to me. I agree. A lot of people misinterpret and believe that completeness comes from one person being Ying and the other Yang but the show is trying to depict that people have both within themselves. And Katara and Zuko are the embodiment of moral duality but come from opposite sides of war, bending styles, upbringings, etcetera and it's poetic because they are able to come together and understand each other and heal is because they've both struggled with good and band. Completely agree with you on the triumphs, but ultimate failure of the bloodbender episode. Also, I think that Mai X Zuko is dysfunctional on purpose- because it's funny, but also because it shows how Zuko doesn't fit in with fire nation (as run by his father) anymore. Mai, aside from her last minute turn on Azula, pretty much represents the casual cruelty of the fire nation. After his time in exile Zuko can't just accept that casual cruelty anymore.

I hadn't thought of that before, and the implications of your observation just sunk in. It never occurred to Katara to use the spirit water to try and heal Jet--but after a conversation with Zuko and suddenly she wants to heal the burn boo-boo. Perhaps on a purely unconscious level, Katara's natural instinct was to do more for Zuko than she would for others. Maybe this isn't noticed as often because Katara is such a caring and giving person in general. But cue Zuko, and Katara's instinct was to offer another level.

Okay bare with me for this. Ty lee immobilized Katara with her chi blocking Katara was on the floor of the earth kingdom Palace and we know after that she is thrown into the crystal caves. ( Similar color of the cave of two lovers with green glowing crystals just saying) While Aang is meditating he has that "vision" of Katara in a tiny little room, with shackles on. Yes, they have said this several times in interviews. That they were nerds and wanted the "hero to get the girl" they never could. They even made adult Aang look like Mike. The incident of the crystal catacombs holds so much meaning and it goes even deeper . Katara leaving him there was one of nudges which drove him to betray everyone. She had raised up his hopes , his hopes of being free of this assault , to be free and control his own Destiny . The scar was a big part of his life , a constant reminder of his shamfulness , and when he got a beacon of hope , a hope that he could get better . Aang came and she chose aang over him , they abandoned him , he was again the second choice , the abandoned choice . Ofcourse Katara doesn't know the way in which she affected Zuko . But I belive that having his hopes crushed , having the fact that he could be rid of the scar crushed was a big thing for him . He had shown his most vulnerable side to someone , allowed himself to be weak by letting her touch him but she turned her back against him . And then when the opportunity that he could get his honor back , secure a place somewhere in the world , be accepted at least somewhere , he dove for it . If Katara would've helped him , maybe things would've been a bit different. (But personally I think that zuko needed to go through the 1st half of s3) . And I'm just giving how I perceived the scene . I was really really sad during that and seeing him so vulnerable was heartbreaking.

Made my love for Zutara even stronger and more deeper. I love it! When you pointed out the scent, being purple (my favorite color) being a mix of red and purple which I knew already but subconsciously didn't realize it in the show, that was just amazing. I feel like the creators cannoned Zutara with that play, as a little favor for Zutara. Like a *hint hint, *wink wink 😉 typ of thing to give us closure, being that you said it was called truth island. Ugh- I would've loved it if ATLA writers had the gumption to write an honest-to-goodness scene bw Aang and Katara, where Aang confessed to her that the reason he had trouble controlling the avatar state was bc of his love for her. Deep down I wish the writers had shown Katara’s genuine reaction to this info, and see if, after knowing just how deeply Aang’s feelings had gotten for her throughout their time together, if she would either A) finally (?) confess her feelings for him and thank him for putting her on that high pedestal, but then tell him to focus on the war and learn to let go of her with the faith that she’ll be there for him in the end... Or... B) tell Aang in her straightened-up motherly voice (which let's face it, has never left her since the beginning of the show) that he needs to let her go, bc the world is depending on him, and also apologize for her behavior, bc she knows now that she had led him on for so long without fully understanding her own feelings for him, as if waiting for those romantic feelings to match his... and they haven't. And the focus needs to be on the war. She would also push herself to make professional boundaries between them as Aang copes with this attachment to her. Like, deep down, with the flow of the ATLA narrative and the character arcs of both Aang and Katara, you know the writers would've gone with Option B if they'd been able to write up a scene like that, but no. Showrunners stepped in and said: It was all about what Aang wanted. Aang had to get the girl. Aang had to win. And that's what we got for the Finale. Never mind how Katara feels about that relationship despite those two uncalled-for, less-than-desired kisses... in the end she kisses him. And it's not just a kiss... it's a very uncomfortably long, passionate shot of them... as if the ShowRunners needed to rub it in our faces that Kataang was End Game. Ugh. Just. No Thanks.

Most of the times for a character to grow we have two major conflicts . The characters wants and his needs . For aang , his want is to stay with Katara , be happy , have fun , be a kid but his need is to defeat the fire lord and bring balance to the world and master the avatar state . For which he has to let go of his want for Katara . Now this is where character development takes place when the character is challenged and they have to take up the need and grow as a person . The need comples them to grow and shows them that not everything will be as you want . But in Atla , they don't do that , aang fulfilled his needs and wants . It wouldn't have been a problem , if they hadn't presented him letting go of Katara to go into the avatar state as the most important thing . But they did . And aang didn't grow as a character at all. That's what still bugs me . He had to let go of Katara and he knew that yet he didn't, even yangchen told him to but he didn't listen . This just shows his immaturity as a character and the fact that he constantly says about saving the world but can't let go of Katara whom he only has a crush on??? He thinks that he loves her , but he feels entitled to her . They never resolved the forced kiss and she just decided in the background that he ended the war so she should be with him . And that kiss at the end was just ugh . As a 14 year old girl , I will write it down on paper that no 14 year old would want to make out that passionately with a 12 year old . The thing about teenagers is that every year adds to their maturity , a 13 year old is bound to be more mature than a 12 year old even though the difference is only 1 . As we are still growing, rapidly forming an understanding of the world around us . That's why it bugs people so much when they see aang who is clearly very immature (its not a bad thing , he's only 12) to be with Katara who is 14 and is very mature and has gone through a lot . Plus she was not comfortable during that scene , she pulled her hair Slightly trying to give him a soft rejection but nope . He had to do it . Kataang has a lot of problems which need to be fixed. Plus, it's not like the writers said you couldn't sympathize with her and show pity - that was the whole point of showing her past being locked up in that God awful prison. The writing that episode was perfectly clear to me: show that yes, Hama is a victim and what happened to her was horrible, but also show that she's lashing out with violence and hurting innocent people who had nothing to do with her torture or the raids on her people. I agree that the show could've touched on how bloodbending could have been monumental in progressing healing, especially in LOK (the fandom explores this more on their own). But the episode wasn't about that. It was meant to show, through Katara's character arc, that the world isn't in black and white; the preconceptions that Katara, and the viewers, have that one nation/people is all good or bad is challenged again by someone from the Water Tribe, which we saw as the good guys, performing such agregious and cruel actions. There is good and bad on all sides. That cruelty does not lie in only one group of people. Being a victim does not absolve you of any horrific actions you decide to commit. An abuser can be abused just as an abused can become an abuser - as with the cycle of abuse, and the cycle of revenge/hatred. Katara's not having an epiphany where she's thinking about a medical breakthrough and all the possible benefits bloodbending can bring, she's thinking about someone from her own culture, someone she trusted, taking control of people's bodies, her friends bodies, and using that power to harm others and lock them away in chains under the mountain to rot away forever. With bloodbending so directly tied to Hama and everything that she did with it, no, Katara is not going to be jumping for joy at her new "power up" lmao.

Zuko and Mai are like Harry and Cho (Harry Potter). In the books, Harry said that Cho represented his life and desires from the world before Sirius died. After Sirius died, his world turned completely upside down.

Also, for extra emotional punch - during end of the battle in Crossroads of Destiny, if you look at where everyone is in the room and then at Katara's face when she's holding Aang's body, the person she's staring at with utter heartbreak _is Zuko,_ as he approaches in a threatening manner, having helped apparently kill Aang. _Ouch._

So... I came across your video on tumblr and I initially balked at the time stamp, but I thought “ this girl has my name, at least let me listen to the first 10 minutes”. And then I proceeded to listen to all of it. Lol When you show the parallel between the ending of avatar and how I Met your mother, I thought of Pam from the office telling Creed that corporate said that you have to identify the differences between the two pictures, and then she turns to the camera and says they’re exactly the same photo. I pretend the final kiss and what LoK did to Katara do not exist. Reject canon, embrace delusion. Miss "I wanna fight" Katara ends up being treated like a glorified airbender incubator? I hate this, mom come pick me up. Putting the glaring differences in character aside, Zuko and Mai ending up together feels so disheartening. Especially from an abuse survivor pov, you're telling me she throws shit at him in the post-canon comic (another thing I pretend does not exist, selective memory is truly a blessing) and it's played for shits and giggles? Don't even get me started on the "remember how the last war meeting went" yes Mai thank you for the reminder I am sure he hasn't been haunted by it and isn't reminded of it every time he sees his reflection somwhere. This is an old video but... i am a Zutarian veteran from when the show was still airing (and the Kataang/Zutara shipping wars were waging. There were many casualities lmao) and i can definitely tell you: from interviews of the actors and writin staff, many believed it should have been Zuko and Katara as they actually do make narrative sense (and thematical sense). Bryke (Bryan Konetizko and Michael DiMartino) pushed back *hard*. There's even a storyboard artist that pointed out that the look on Katara's face in the show in Day of Black Sun? Someone had changed Katara's smiling expression in the storyboard to be that neutral/sad look so that "Omg!! Look! She DID feel the same as Aang!!!" Would come off as a "twist". Which is absolutely stupid. The reason Legend of Korra assassinated many beloved characters is because of the weak link: Bryke. They were head writers for Season 1 and for most of LoK's seasons after. Which is why there were many retcons to their mythology and to the characters.

Correct me if I’m wrong but in my opinion Katara reminds me of Shinobu Kocho of Demon Slayer like the way she adopted a motherly behavior to fill the void that her mother left definitely looks a lot like what shinobu did. Indeed before her sister died she was completely her opposite she was hot headed, tough and all but when her sister died (rip Kanae Kocho ) she completely adopted her sister’s behavior and habit like her way of smiling, her way of dressing, her compassionate and optimistic nature and all. I really thinks that this can be a way for some people to deal/ react to their close relation’s death. So Here it was just a link that I have seen between this two amazing and powerful characters ! Hi! 👋 I know I’m super late to the party, but I just wanted to say a few things: I honestly think that everybody should be allowed to ship whoever they want or have their own opinions without being harassed or shamed. Like I’ve actually seen hardcore Kataangers so as far as sending death threats to people for something as silly as liking a non-canon ship over what we ended up getting. If you don’t agree, fine. But just either type a respectful comment or don’t say anything at all and look for a video in favor of YOUR ship. As a Zutarian, I would never go out of my way to find a video on Kataang just to shit on it. And yes, you can make the argument that it’s different because Kataang is canon and Zutara is not. Like we’re aware that Kataang is canon. It doesn’t mean that we aren’t allowed to ship other characters. Also a huge argument that most Kataangers make is, “lol Zutarians are delusional.” Prefering a certain ship over the canon one DOES NOT make us delusional. However, genuinely believing that Zutara is actually canon is delusional. In fact, Kataangers who say that Zutara is bad because, “lol they literally hate each other” is actually being delusional. I’m aware that Zuko and Katara don’t have feelings for each other. But they definitely don’t hate each other! Have you even seen the 2nd half of Season 3? lol 😂 Also I love your reactions, especially 47:28 and 1:07:16 and 1:13:42. I wish the very best for you and all ATLA fans! ❤
