Heads up to any people watching this now. There's been a not insignificant amount of people reporting these amps blowing up and taking headphones with them in the last few weeks and months. There's been threads on several forums about it. I recommend doing your due diligence before pulling the trigger on them. I was skeptical cause everything has a one off defective unit but this seems to be a pattern.

Great concise, structured and straight to the point review! I love how easily it is to change between high and lower headphones and iems - and switch to preamp for a tube amp. My tiny annoyance is how big the power supply is. I have to use different power board with bigger spacing. Also, I wish the same power supply can be used for E30 as well (ie allowing E30 and L30 power to be bridged) When stacked on top of E30, it's easy to accidentally click the E30 sensitive multifunction button when adjusting L30 volume.
@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
Interesting observation about using them stacked! Sounds like a whoopsie by Topping. The power supply is a monster, but a necessary evil to produce that much power (and with good quality)

I actually got the Topping e30 based on your review, and I really was very impressed by it. I thought of combining it with the Schiit modi 3+, since unfortunately the amp which I had at home, an FX audio x6 didn't have RCA ins. BUT first of all the Schiit is always out of stock in Europe, and it also costs 135 euros, almost equivalent to this. I was actually waiting for something, which is similarly priced and maybe performs better. Long story short, I think the waiting has ended, you convinced me! I will be pairing the two Toppings.

I agree 100% with your review and, even though I have had mine for about five weeks now, I enjoyed watching this review. It confirms my experience, though I do not have noise at the low end of volume with the one set of sensitive IEMs that I own. My source is my computer, using a TOSlink connection. Perhaps the lack of electrical contact with the computer has to do with this? I own both the E30 and L30 and use them together. Each time I listen, I am impressed. It is exciting to be in a time where SOTA sound quality is available for such a low price!

Hi i have this amp and it is super, but only issues are- do not remove the plastic covers it makes the labelling on the front very hard to read, and the volume control needs better marker notch, as it is very hard to see in a darkened room, i put a small dot sticker on it. not a major issue but the wall wart is very heavy and the plug not very long. sounds like I'm bitching about this amp but other than these faults this is the best value, clean crystal clear amp, the will drive 90% of headphones, with its 2300mW x 2 @32Ω THD+N

I'm looking for a headphone amp for home studio use. The switching between amp and 'phones is very handy but grafting this into Adams AX7 monitors via Focusrite 212 audio interface (the current h/phone source) using RCA - not sure about that. It seems to be designed just for a stereo listening installation rather than home recording. DACs are getting better and better at small money. It's the doodaas such as balanced in/out that are becoming what one really looks at - apart from the subjectives of presentation. I'm not thrilled either by reports of it blowing up! Way to go! YAY! So would you say better than Heresy? This is a nice statement that is maybe even better than 789 eh! I'd guess you meant 789 in SE, because on balanced it pushed A LOT of power, and to me it sounded so good. II just ordered one, i was re-purchasing a 789 for just 250euros in Italy, but as i seen your review, already ordered since i have my E30 here never powered on, should be nice pairing.. even if uh, you don't point too much on sound quality lately on some amps lately, but you spoken so clear that this is a must buy. This pushes 1W at 32ohm and a bit more on 16ohm, but it is a great Watt i guess, well I'll hear! :)
@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
The L30 has plenty of power for any headphone you're likely to be using. Don't be swayed by the power myth. As long as you've got good headroom (i.e. you're not maxing out the volume) you've got enough power with an amp like this. The 789 may put out more power in balanced mode, but I find the L30 objectively more enjoyable due to better depth and a more natural tonal character to the sound.

@@PassionforSound Well, I received it today. I've only used it for an hour or so (after letting it warm up for around 5 hours, although I doubt it would make much difference). And I must admit the L30 is impressive for the price. I see what you mean when you compare it to the Soloist. There's a resemblance in the smoothness, but the Soloist is much richer in its tone and analogue-like sound. However, the L30 feels clearer. I'd still prefer the Soloist because of the soundstage and superior imaging. But at this price, I think the L30 has a spectacular performance. I think I'll buy the E30 to have a nice little stack.

Crazy an amp this cheap basically measures at the electrical limits of noise and distortion. @potatofrench30954 жыл бұрын
You are right, but this is why it was also so interesting to hear Jason Stoddard's opinion about measurments. He said, that good measurments don't necessarily translate into the best sound, because we don't measure everything, and also (most probably) we cannot measure the likes of one person. I have the Topping e30 and despite the fact, that I know that it measures wonderfuly, I must say that I am not super impressed by it. It is good, but for my taste for example the sound is not natural enough, it has some artifical timbre to it. I know it is just taste! But it was good to hear the same thing from Jason, who is clearly an expert, and justify my doubts towards choosing a product just because it measures well. Nonetheless this video is superb, and and still I am thinking to really try out the Topping stack to hear how they complement each other.
@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
That's exactly the key. Getting timbre and realism goes beyond clean distortion figures. Transients (as Jason alluded to) seem to be important and we can't really measure what happens when a complex waveform is applied to the circuit, but that's really what matters in terms of how a DAC or amp reproduces real music (i.e. not a simple sine wave)

@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, 2 things worth noting: 1) I've had others report no noise so this may have been some induced noise in my particular setup. 2) the noise is only an issue on IEMs. Even sensitive headphones will require more volume and therefore the noise will be easily gone
@ExSkyCyclePilot4 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound Okay, many thanks! For the money, this should be a decent setup for the Arya headphones, although the advertised power ratings for the L30 are a bit optimistic - you need a non-standard 3 Vrms in to reach the advertised numbers. With the standard 2 Vrms in, about one watt RMS out per channel is more like it, but that should still be plenty.

@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
Hi Christian, yes, I found the addition of the extra device in the chain reduced the sound quality compared to a direct connection to the DAC. However, if you're using the L30 as a headphone amp and pre-amp then it will be much more convenient to stick with your current setup and the difference isn't worth the hassles of switching outputs all the time IMO.

Apologies in advance if this is a bad question, but I was just wondering if it would add any sort of noticeable differences to how my setup currently sounds? With regards to enhancing the clarity of the treble perhaps or such? I’m using an HD6xx, powered by the FX Audio Dac X6, playing Tidal Hifi. Not that I have any complaints with this dac/amp, however I’ve seen some reviews of better amps / dedicated dacs truly bringing out the best in the headphones - for that reason, I’ve been looking into purchasing the D10s and this L30 as the amp.

I just got a pair of low impedance headphones (Slate VSX, 37 ohms) for mixing purposes - would it make sense to get an L30 amp to drive those, as the headphone amps in my audio interfaces are geared more for higher impedance cans (which can apparently produce distortion / nonlinearities in lower impedance phones)? Would this kind of amp also potentially improve monitor performance (Focal Solo 6be at home currently)? Thanks for any guidance!

Hi Aaron, I'd try the audio interface first and see if your happy, but my experience with them suggests that a dedicated amp like the L30 will give a significant quality improvement regardless of the impedance issues. Audio interfaces are very rarely (never?) good headphone amps. I use the excellent Scarlett 2i2 but it's headphone output is dreadful. Stick with the L30 as newly purchased units have protection built in to prevent the damage to headphones. If you're still not comfortable, the Schiit Asgard 3 is a brilliant choice of amp if you can stretch the budget a bit.
@smithedits3 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound sorry for asking this much and I do really appreciate your help alot. Yes I do have the stretch to buy that amp. Which one do you consider the best and most reliable? And you would not consider MOTU 2 a good headphone amp?

Asgard 3 will be the best choice of amp. The MOTU M2 is an audio interface, not a dedicated headphone amp. It won't perform anywhere near as well as something like the Asgard 3 in my experience.

I've a HD800S so an L30 would still be preferable over the THX 789 in my case?
@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
I think the L30 is marvelous and I like that it's a little warmer in tone than the 789. Both are very good, but I'd choose the L30. In fact I did - I sold my 789 after getting the L30. I've ended up reverting to the A90, but only for convenience having multiple outputs, inputs, etc.

I believe it's slightly better than the L30, but it's not a huge difference so it really depends on whether you feel that anything is missing from what you're currently hearing. @@PassionforSound I think the point you raised about having a pre-amp switch on the front panel is extremely relatable. It's a huge quality of life feature. @PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
I've got a review of the SMSL HO200 coming up soon. It's a really solid amp and quite well priced. I think that's the best option beyond the L30 and before the Jotunheim 2.
@Farazao4 жыл бұрын
I'm so sad I couldn't like its timbre. I ended up selling mine, as I much preffered the timbre of the smsl sp200 (which I know is an amp you dislike). It's frustrating because I could hear improvement in dynamics and a more holographic image toghether with tighter bass. I use to have a dx7pro and its amplification with the original op amps has the same timbre and I ended up selling that unit too. Maybe if I want the impovement over the smsl I would have to try some more expensive alternative. :(
@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
Interesting. What was it you didn't like? A touch to warm / rich?
@Farazao4 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound I like warm / rich. Whtat I dislike about the topping timbre the the somewhat mufled notes, to my perception. I've told this to a lot of people and apparently I'm the only one who's perceiving it so it my be really personal taste plus the way my brain interpret the sound.
@Farazao4 жыл бұрын
But trying to explain it is like the attack, sustain, decay and realease of the toppings is managed in a way it's not sharp but neither "liquid". I hear it like the attack was fast, the note is sustained longer (so it's not sharp) but the release is ultra fast (and so there is no reverbaration of the harmonics either). The result is that acoustic guitars (for example) often sound as the player was hiting notes mufling slightly with the right hand (exagerating here). If you want to take the time to experience yourself try it with the same chain as me: Bifrost 2 > amp > Focal Clear and listen with the THX and with the L30 to Natalia Lafourcade's "Son Amores (That's Amore)". You'll notice the guitars sound dryer on L30, I think. And even if not it is an incredible recording highly recommend anyways!

Thanks for the explanation, Victor - I'll take a listen... I think I already understand what you're describing with the difference between 789 and L30, but I'm keen to try the test you've suggested

I had L30 for 7 month and just replace it with 789. 789 is much, much better. L30 is a budget amplifier with a budget sound. It sounds flat and boring, no any PRaT and soundstage. The detail level is very low too. It is very noticeable on live records. For example Mozart - Die Zauberflote [Lorengar, Deutekom, Burrows - Solti] (1969-2008) (3 CD) - DECCA sounds terrible, no any air, obertons, details and space.
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
It's been a while since I owned the 789, but it's fair enough that it might outperform the L30 given the cost of the 789 when it was originally released.

I don't know but it seems that each time topping is in the question it just gets hyped as best thing ever with no flaws and next best thing to sliced bread. It just seems like another hype-train which will disappear like many others before. Also the topping strategy to push producs based only on better measurments on each new product from the last gen is IMO contraproductive for their own bussiness. They will eventually run out of headroom for “osciloscope reviews” which is the only card they have right now and then pushing new products with the same set of numbers for much higher price will be like denying their own basic strategy which is: cheap dac which is only better because of numbers way beyond your actual treshold of hearing and the dacs are all the same..Or in other words why I should buy higher priced dac which may perform worse than their lower tier offerings from the past based on numbers?!. Is there anything more to the sound than just 4 or 5 numbers from the machine test... Decide for your self. Just my two cents. BTW I love your reviews. Keep them coming.

Thankfully some things never change that's why tube amps are still around!!!!
@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
Hi semtexxl, I agree that Topping keep pumping out new, better measuring products, but they're already getting a bit stale for me. I would still recommend the E30/L30 combo and the D90/A90 combo in certain situations, but there is a sameness to their DACs that prevents me being really excited about them like I am about something like the Qutest, Ares II or Bifrost 2. I think Topping provide great products for people that aren't looking for that last bit of magic in the sound, but there are other brands going beyond.
@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
Yay for tubes!

I honestly think a lot of these reviewers are getting paid to promote and push specific products like this. I mean just a couple months ago the best thing ever was the THX AAA brands right? Now its Topping/SMSL? What bullshit. I don't think most people can hear these supposed "differences" and I've heard it with many different systems. Honestly, just stick to something that has good reviews and if you like it keep it. Never mind the hype train.
