I gotta say, that knife design opened the whole world of exotic designs for me. I met my sifu don Hinzman when I watched the movie the hunted and it started my martial arts training. I've wanted that knife since the first time I saw it on big screen. I have the BucknBear version of it and I love it. Some day I'll have the TOPS version. I'd rate the T4 version at least a 4 because of its hype and controversy. And that it made such quick work in a unique way, not like a traditional small woods fixed blade. Thanks for posting brother!

I had the T1 a while back.. now I'm starting to want a T4. My time in Alaska made me really appreciate the utility of the ulu, and playing with the T4, the Jessmuck, and my Bush tool made me really appreciate the HUGE belly and the decently sized flat edge with that interesting transition in between. the "hook" was my favorite part of that blade to be honest. Great video sir

G'day John, I'll give the T4 a 4.5. It's a highly versatile knife that does more than one task really well. But then I like the big one too. I don't know why people get so bent out of shape when a 'radical' blade profile comes along. That's how knife technology advances. Too much emphasis on aesthetics, too. A pipe wrench is an ugly tool but nobody says, no, I won't have a pipe wrench because it's ugly. It gets the job done. Everyone hissed at Chris's Jes-X but we now all know it's an extremely useful knife. A great review, as usual, John! Cheers, BH

Glad to see more vids coming out John, have enjoyed your videos for a long time. I will have to take a look at the T4 now, and with the smaller handle it might be a good knife the wife would use. Without getting my hands on it I would rate it a 4, because it obviously works well, you showed that, but I have large gorilla hands, so I assume the handle would be small for me. Thanks for the look at the T4!

I have the 1 and the 4. As in the video the number four is tiny it’s like a neck knife the number one has a good size handle and if you have extra large hands it would work well but keep in mind the knife is really heavy it’s a quarter inch of steel and I believe about 11 inches long.

5 stars... The issues with the Tracker series seem overly emotional IMHO. To me seems to be folks wanting to use them like a regular Bowie or something similar...they are different. As with anything...a parang, a Kukri, a machete, scandi Mora, Bushcraft type or other sharp and pointy there is a learning curve - you have to let the knife show you what it can do...and then practice. Heck I also like the TOPS LVI Bushcrafter Kukri 7 and again like the TOPS TBT1 you have to work with it...both are a chunk of steel for certain. However, as you said the TBT4 is just fun...and as you demonstrated...it can do a lot of stuff. Bark River has come out with a lot of great knives as well (I like Mike and Jim Stewart's approach with knives in general). I've been messing with sharp and pointy things for over 60 years...and as my dad (a journeyman tool and die maker) once told me...(with my first knife - a buck skinner)... 'Son, if it's a good metal, with a good design, heat treat and proper temper... maybe it's just that you haven't figured out how to use it properly. Work with it a bit and see what it can really do...and if it's not for you then that's OK. Just don't trash something because you quit.' He also told me...'It doesn't matter what the design is...if the metal, heat treat and temper are lousy...you'll know pretty quick...those you can turn into coat hooks or paper weights...'. Over the many years - that has been good advice. So far all of the things I have from TOPS, Bark River, and a few others....they are definitely are not coat hooks or paper weights. Thanks for sharing...and yes that hook makes awesome curls...whether it's the TBT1, 2 or 4. All the VERY BEST!

Very good review. I’ve owned several version of the T1 Tracker (TOPS, Bark River, Custom) and fall into the unimpressed category. I have owned one T4 and agree with your assessment with one distinction, I have XL glove size hands and the T4 handle is just way too short and thin for me. Pity because with a proper sized handle this would be a good little knife.

Alot of people are suffering from a cognitive dissonance with the tracker. They aren't see and understanding it for what it is at heart. It's made to be the axe. The knife. The saw. The spade. Every contour has purpose. It is many tools to carry less of. And to make it an extension of your self, is to serve yourself better an more confidently.

I watched a guy with the larger version on a youtube video and he described it as 4 different flint tools in one blade which seems a good way to look at it. I think it is an interesting knife but it is way too expensive. £150-00 for a neck knife, £250-00 for the T2 and £275-00 for the T1 here in the UK. You can do all the things you did with that knife with a Mora 510 for £10-00...but if I had that amount of money burning a hole in my pocket I would be interested in any one of them, but I wont so I have to stick with 27 and a half Mora 510's !!

Potentially unpopular opinion: I think this would be the perfect EDC knife with the addition of a karambit-style ring. Just a simple one inch inner diameter circle on the end of the handle. Would make it so the handle actually had enough room for all four fingers, make it extremely secure in the hand for utility tasks, and would make it an extremely viable last-ditch backup weapon. The central hook of the blade emulates the forward-swept tip of a karambit as it is, while the point at the end maintains the viability of downward, hammer-fist type strikes. Plus, the sawtooth edge on the back of the knife would aid in trapping and controlling limbs when the knife was held in a reverse/icepick blade-out grip. Now to attempt to convince Tops to build a ringed variant of this knife...

One for EDC, one for my get home bag, and the third in reserve in case of loss, theft, and or discontinuance by the manufacturer. Next to a SAK, I can't think of a single piece of steel knife design that is as useful. The T4 is a keeper. Sadly, the T1, has not been that good of a knife to me and has turned in to a "money pit" knife, for is need the profile reground, and the sheath remade twice.... and still isn't "right".

I like it but it needs couple of things The way I see it is unsafe "as is " This knife is unsafe and the chance of getting cut is greater than not to The handle is small and it's right to the sharp edge Maybe this issue can be dealt with if there is a drop at the chock point to act as a guard also throwing an extra inch on the handle would give better grip If those changes take place I would give it a 6 out of five
@Wingman1157 жыл бұрын
+cking_closure I was surprised it felt really secure in the hand for me.
@ckingclosur7 жыл бұрын
Your absolutely right I 100% agree with on a individual case like yours . You were comfortable and secure but if we think of it on the base of mass production and that thousands of customers are going to buy it and use it "at least that what the company is hopping for" we then have to think beyond one user such as yourself"pro" We can't label the product for pros only that will limit marketing . We want all knife users to have two things , one is the functionality of the product ,second why it was designed the way it was , having those two combined will make any knife user say "wow" I can do so many things with this product " I want one" so finally 1- thumb rise/ramp or jimping 2- drop point guard at the chock point in the quillon area Or 3- shaping the handle at the throat like a " dipped collar" and that will join points 1 and 2 in one solution 4- half inch for big hands in length , the handle should be fat one not flat for good grip and the reason for that is remember knife functionality so good fat grip would allow you skiving and wood shaving . That was my opinion from business point of view for mass production that would satisfy the potential costumers. Sorry mate for long reply but I thought the maker would take notes
