Thirty years ago the reeds on the canal side of the river Exe (opposite Topsham and upstream of the lock keepers cottage), were regularly harvested for thatch. The eight acre site was then given to the RSPB and for twenty years or more it was a bird sanctuary. Very recently the RSPB returned the site to the current owner and, with permission, he has revived the century-old tradition. He has had expert help from Chris Riley of the National Scythe Association who is shown in this clip cutting the reeds.
