Ryan sets out a series of progressions to work on as you develop your slice serve. He shows why pronation is your source of power (it's the fastest way you can move your hand) and demystifies how it’s possible to pronate AND hit side spin on your serve. He also explains the relationship between racket face angle (where the ball goes) and swing path (the kind of spin you'll get). Interestingly, you'll never swing towards your target on the serve. I won't say anymore. Not because I am lazy but because I don't think I know anyone who explains tennis concepts better than Ryan so I simply won't do it justice.
Have a look at Ryan's courses here onlinetraining...

Thank you so much for a clear explanation on the ball travel path ! I had changed from a semi-western grip to a continental to add slice to my serve but never understood the fact that the ball travels in the direction the strings face and not the path of the racket. Now I understand why I cannot keep the ball in court on my serve. Can't wait to begin practicing ! Thanks so much !

Very easy to understand the way you broke it down into segments. I hope you have other videos and that they are presented with such clarity. Thank you!

This is EXACTLY how I teach this serve. Yet I am amazed at how many (well respected and famous) coaches teach it as a flat serve approach and finish "scooping" the ball (with the racket face turned up) with the face of the racket. Why is this such a controversial topic and so divisive in terms of how to teach it? Good job on this video. Couldn't be better explained!

"loved this video teaching the slice serve with the topspin pro! I took the panels off and demonstrated the left to right spin for the slice. They all tried it and I couldn’t believe it but in 10 minutes they were all hitting slice serves! I wish I had it on video."

Great stuff! How different is the swing path. Aside from hitting the nose and pronation, is the path more or less splitting the dif between a completely flat first serve and a topspin kicker?
@TopspinPro
@TopspinPro 3 жыл бұрын
For a theoretical flat serve the swing path is directly towards the target (call that 180 degrees - from above) but no-one really does this. For an ATP tour 'flat' serve which has around 1000rpm on it the swing path probably comes in at about 150 degrees) so 30 degrees off the straight line. A slice serve has around 2000rpm and the swing path is at 135 degree (so 45 degrees off the straight) And a kick serve has around 3000rpm with a swing path closer to 120 degrees (so 60 degrees off the straight line/30 degree relative to the base). Notice the more tangential the swing path the more spin is created. Coming back to your original question, for a slice, post contact - yes, I would say racket travels sits between a flatter serve and a kicker. I hope the above makes sense! it's easier to draw I think!

@@TopspinPro fantastic response thank you. Really helpful for thinking about both flat and slice, in how it's all a matter of degree when it comes to spin versus a black and white yes or no. Think this will help me with both versions and work that spectrum based on intent. TY!
