Here's another crazy idea that worked: In 1907, White Star Liner SS Suevic ran aground and it got stuck. After exhausting all the options to free the ship up, the operator decided to use dynamite to sever the stuck bow section of the ship and free up the remaining part of the ship. Despite losing a bow section, Suevic remained afloat thanks to the watertight bullheads, the ship made it back to Southampton sailing in reverse, guided by tugs and it was later sailed to Belfast for a full repair.

I am continually fascinated by the concept of dazzle camo - I love the counterintuitive nature, which is also why I love the concept of hiding bombers by stringing lights all over them so they would not create tell-tale dark spots against the sky.

The lunar missions were in what's called a 'free return trajectory' from the start. If left alone, they would have shot around the moon and back towards Earth. The very precise burns were to a) increase the return speed to allow the ship to arrive back before it's consumables, mainly power, failed completely, and b) alter the final approach trajectory into a direct descent, rather than requiring a Earth orbit injection followed by a deorbit burn. That last one was very very critical, the corridor that gave a safe reentry was so narrow that if you had a two foot diameter sphere representing Earth, the corridor would be thinner than a sheet of paper in that scale. Shallow and it would skip off like a stone skipping on a lake and either have repeated uncontrolled bounces or be slung off into space, slightly too deep an angle would have generated a similar skipping, and deeper still would have been too much stress for the craft to handle on reentry and it would have disintegrated.

Copper Hamster No Apollo lunar mission ever was planned to return to earth orbit on the way back from the moon. There was never any plan (or available rocket power) on any mission to perform an earth orbit injection so no de-orbit burn was ever required.

In the 1960s we used to drive round the N.W corner of London to reach the A10 and my granny's house. By the side of the road was a building, I think a small power station, which had been "dazzled" during WW2 and left like that - somewhere near Rickmansworth I think.

some countries have that rule. The Escape, as long as you do not commit any other crimes during it, does not make you serve longer. You will be hunted, but they have no law to make you serve longer for that escape. It is something that might be derived from the international laws regarding prisoners of war. A PoW has many rights and duties, and among those is, that as long as he doesn't kill someone during the escape, his captors may not punish him for escaping, since every soldier becoming a PoW has one mission: to escape captivity.

Yeah, there was a discernable delay between the button press and the result. I used to say that the best way to guarantee you couldn't get a whammy was to actively TRY to get one, because the lights would invariably move once from when they hit the button and said "STOP!"

Science fiction novelist Larry Niven described a future where any organ would be usable by anybody. Concurrent with this ability was a way of preserving organs in a "bank" ready for use. Needless to say, the demand was high. So high that stocks were depleted. And so capital punishment was restored, with the miscreants cut up for the organ banks. Even that wasn't enough. Soon, the death penalty was steadily dropped as to its trigger level, from murder, to assault, to too many traffic tickets. Eventually supply met demand.

They both said it. Jack Swigert said, "Okay, Houston, we've had a problem here." Capcom at Houston replied, "This is Houston, say again, please." Jim Lovell repeated the status update with clarification, "Houston, we've had a problem. We've had a Main B Bus undervolt." Generally, people are quoting the movie, which plays it a little differently. Kevin Bacon's Swigert says, "We have a problem here," but the dramatic emphasis is put on Tom Hanks' Lovell saying, "Houston, we have a problem." (The script also notably changes the tense in 'had' to 'have.'). Kudos to TopTenz for getting the quote right on that point.

This one is just an urban legend, and has NO verifiable basis in fact, but unfortunately, the actual truth was never written down, so it may actually be true. When Attila the Hun reached the city of Rome in the fifth century AD, Pope Leo invited him into the city. According to the urban legend, citizens of the city dressed in rags and acted as if they were paupers, injured and starving. Leo supposedly told Attila that another band sacked Rome two weeks prior by having the city gates opened by a traitor. This marauding band took anything of value and anyone who could be used as a slave. Leo then took Attila to the place where all the riches of the church were held, only to show that it was empty. Attila, satisfied that Rome was not the wealthy city anymore, left the place. (The last part is recorded as fact.) Even if it is not true, it sounds like a crazy story that worked.

I personally regard the Apollo 13 CO2 scrubber workaround as one of the greates, if not THE greatest hack in history :) Also, that kidney swap idea is absolutely brilliant. As was the Brazilian currency idea (if I'm not mistaken, the Brazilian Real is still used, is it not?) And as for that Mexican prison-break-by helicopter, why OH WHY hasn't that been made into a film yet?? That'd make for an AWESOME movie, I think!

I remember being in the IMC (Instructional Materials Center, 1970s term for school library) with many classes on that day in April watching the capsule return to earth. We got to sit near the front since we were the youngest class there. We collectively held our breath as the capsule lost radio signal as it passed through the atmosphere. Then we all cheered when we heard that they had splashed down. I also remember most of the adults crying with relief.

The documentary Our Man In Tehran >>>>>>> Argo. That actual story is so much more fascinating than the over American-ized version. The Americans had very little to do with that operation, and the movie also didn't give proper credit to the (English/Australian I can't remember which) embassy workers who took the Americans in the night before they got to Ken Taylor's residence. Ken Taylor was the real hero of that story, and he was barely even in Argo. Even Tony Mendez, the guy Affleck played in the film, praises him.

When I was in the Navy I met an old sailor who claimed to have been on one of those dazzled ships. He said not only did it work but it worked really well. But he also said he knew where the lost squadron was located as well so I don't know if he was totally honest.

Point of order: "Command module" *NOT* "shuttle". The shuttle program was probably being developed at the time as it's presidential approval was announced during the final Apollo mission (Apollo 15?), but it certainly hadn't even started yet during Apollo 13.

Here are a few more to be mentioned. A family living in the former GDR escaped over the heavily guarded border with a homemade hot air balloon. Three brothers built and homemade hang-glider with an engine on the back. They flew it over the border from GDR to West Germany. The underside of it was decorated with red stars making the border soldiers hesitate to shoot it down. One of them was left behind (can't remember the reason), but the two others had the balls to fly back with that thing and get him out of there some time after this incident. Talking about crazy plans that worked out well...!

4:30 I remember that episode. Aired on Fri June 8th 1984 a week into summer vacation after 4th grade, and the host had to walk in front of the dude (that was paused in the background) and basically say to be continued on Monday. What I never got is why he stopped at $110k. I would have kept going to a few million just to see what they would do when the scoreboard rolled over a few times (and to see if their accountant rolled over as well, they had to get rid of the $ sign already).

Actually, fire ships have been in use for hundreds of years, it’s just that they fell out of use due to modern ships being more expensive and shooting smaller explosive rounds from far away is much more effective then ramming one large explosive in.

Yep, the Shuttle hadn't been built yet. But in fairness, the Shuttle has been the only manned spacecraft the US has had since Simon was born (Shuttle - 1981, Simon - 1987.)

#10 Happens in a Swedish comedy from 1986: They rob an IKEA store by getting to the money via the pneumatic tube system (a plot point being that they have to keep the pressure constant in the system, or the alarms will go off). Maybe they got their inspiration from that movie. ;D (It's rumored that those movies, witch crazy and elaborated plans, inspired several thief's to use similar plans irl)

One of the main purposes of dazzle camouflage was to confuse optical rangefinders. That's why it was still used to an extent during the early parts of WWII but was largely abandoned once most rangefinding was done by radar.

I think he meant "shuttle" in the generic sense, as in a vehicle which transports you back and forth between other modes of transportation or destinations. In that sense, the Command Module is a shuttle, as it "shuttled" the astronauts between the Lunar Module and Earth.

There's a canadian children's history book...a fictional diary...called No Safe Harbour about the Halifax explosion. In it the dazzle camoflage is described as something that peaked the interest of young people watching the ships from shore.
