Id assume we could just chalk it up to him being desperate and not thinking logically? In regards to the machloket in the Gemara, i think the fact there was a machloket in the first place reveals its not part of our Masoret to believe in its efficacy and thus just as with the medical advice of the Gemara, we hold by the science of our times (which unanimously agrees magic doesn't exist).
