One of the most debilitating emotions is guilt. It often finds us when we don't deserve it and sometimes we deny it when we do. This week's parsha addresses the idea of misplaced guilt and blame with the concept of the Refuge Cities for those guilty of man slaughter. If a person is involved in another's death, but bears no guilt for it, why should he or she have to flee at all? Perhaps it is not only flight from the relatives of the deceased, but also from their own sense of guilt, misplaced though it may be.
Today we don't have Cities of Refuge to deal with our guilt and blame, misplaced or otherwise, we have the High Holidays. This week's Torah Talk explores the connection between the the High Holidays and the Cities of Refuge and helps us understand our relationship to guilt and how to heal from it.
