Bapak Kamma playing the "Suling Lembang" flute.
The "Suling Lembang" is a big Suling flute from Tana Toraja.
It sometimes has a buffalo horn at the end, but like the "Lalove" in Palu, players prefer a wooden piece as this should sound more like a "human voice".
Kamma presents a colourful mix of Suling pieces:
Lembang (the voice, a song which he sings in the next video)
Pa' Lellenane (a lullaby which he sings in the following video)
Pa' Pelle' (the buffalo song)
Ma' Marakka' (funeral music)
The "Suling Lembang" can be used for many purposes, but it is most common to hear it at a funeral ceremony, if the family of the deceased can afford the musicians. Such a funeral procession with Suling Lembang and a vocalist will be posted later in my videos.
Recorded in Batutumonga, Tana Toraja, Sulawesi, July 2018
