Blacksmithing - Forging a skillet / frying pan

In this video I show how I make a skillet or frying pan, whatever you like to call it. This is by no means THE way to make a pan, I just used tools and techniques available to me at the moment.

The many skillet designs I have seen dont include a threaded wood handle that could work itself loose. Not sure this could be labeled an heirloom piece

Most metal pans dont break as they are made of metal

@@hondsvod the metal they are made out of in stores is generally crap metal or pot metal and they do break usually around the handle area. More like tear than break but either way, they can have pretty serious failures. And it's more about warping and the coatings wearing off that most store bought pans have that ruins them

What a great video, the great thing about carbon steel skillets is once seasoned it becomes a nonstick pan without the teflon, eggs slide around as if they were on top of ball bearings. It's comparable to cast iron for searing but with 1/2 the weight. Absolutely beautiful.

"It's comparable to cast iron for searing but with 1/2 the weight." Mild steel is a little heavier than typical cast iron (7.85 g/cm3 vs. 7.3 g/cm3). The reason that steel skillets are usually lighter than cast iron ones is because they are much thinner-walled. That also means they aren't comparable to cast iron for searing, because less mass means less heat retention. However, the steel pan that this guy made is almost certainly as heavy as, or heavier than, a typical cast iron skillet of the same diameter. He started with 6mm thick steel. A typical steel skillet only has a [uniform] wall thickness of 2mm. A typical cast iron skillet has varying wall thickness of about 3mm on the sides to about 5mm on the bottom, which is pretty close to how this guy's skillet turned out.

I like the oven method myself. Slap on some oil and put it in the oven, it gets evenly heated without any work, and i get to have a cup of tea while it seasons. Repeat as many times as however many cups of tea you need ;]

Your craftsmanship and attention to details is so wonderful to see, because we live now in a world of ""stamped out and cheaply made"", but what you make is like art. The shrinking process for the rim is so cool. I would love to see a comparison for how thick it was after grinding vs after the pan was completed. From the video it looked like it almost became as thick as the original sheet was.

A beautiful piece. You have mastery in your hands. You have been blessed. My grandfather used to black smith. When he used to make those, he also used square steel for the pot. I used to watch him. I see people on Facebook complaining about your work, probably because you don't only make knives and axes, but I think our work is more interesting because of that. Your work is more representative of what the village blacksmiths did for many centuries, which was to make everything from nails to household and agricultural tools.

Considering all the heating and hammering etc, you did well to get the pan so concentric. Also liked how you used the drill press as a lathe, top idea. And this is how you get a $600 pan. But no joke, this is beautiful. I wish the rivets were a bit more ground down inside the pan, or just straight up welded the handle.
