Watch me make a wafer iron from scratch. It is used to make rolled wafers, rullrån, as we call them in Sweden. This utensil is traditionally made from cast iron, but I use a different technique... I hope you like it.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Wafer recipe:
100 g butter (melted)
1,5 dl sugar
1 tsp vanilla sugar
3 dl wheat flour
2 dl water

This waffle iron will last for ages and can be passed down through the generations! I have one that’s roughly 145 years old and it’s been used at least once a week since it’s been in the family.

It's not a waffle iron, it's like a Norwegian Krumkake iron. I imagine the Swedes have a different name for it. My mother made these for us every Christmas with a special cast iron mold. Rolled up on a small conical wood rolling pin while they are hot. Fill them with whipped cream (flavored with Baileys or Grand Marnier), cherry on top. Oh god they are good. My sister still makes them every year. Thanks for the outstanding video, Torbjorn.

@@silicon.alchemist Italians have something that looks the same called pizzelle, an anise flavored wafer cookie. I wonder if they all had one origin and were traded. The design match between the different irons is perfect.

Another great video! And now I’m hungry thanks for that! One small safety consideration, never use your hand to remove the long stringy award from the lathe, especially while the chuck is spinning, forge up a hook for pulling them away in case they get caught by the chuck, they could take your fingers or at the very least leave you with a nasty cut. Sorry about the rant, I hope you and your family have a safe and happy holiday!

This is splendid! I'm American, and part of my heritage is Norwegian. I have a traditional Norwegian utensil of this type, made by Jotul. My grandmother called the product krumkakke, and was rolled on a tapered roller instead of a straight one, so they would slip off the form easier. My recipe is similar to yours, but included eggs in the batter. As you say, the traditional utensil is made from cast iron. Mine has a separate ring, made to fit over a burner on a wood stove, but it works very well on my glass stove top. (I have an aluminum foil layer on the stove ring, to protect the glass stove top and it works very well) My iron is seasoned nicely and there is enough butter in the recipe that I do not have to oil the surfaces for each krumkakke I make. I can make and roll one every minute, when the temperature is right. Your skills are wonderful, and you have made a beautiful tool! Thank you for this video!

I was just wandering the other day what you might present us as special Swedish Christmas food this year, Torbjörn, but this even beats my highest dreams, making your own waver iron plus recipe, wow. What a tremendous piece of fine work, how many hours did you spend on only engraving? But you had me for one moment, I was almost in shock when you set the plates on the Laser Cutter... this can’t be true, he's not really doing it this way ... phew, only for transfer, ok, granted :) Wishing you and all your family, including your cat ;) , a merry Christmas. Sven.

This was amazing to watch! making these wafers is part of my family tradition! here in Denmark these wafers go by "Goderåd" me and my Grandma used to bake them everytime for christmas or any big family get together. they'd say it wasn't a real party without my grandma's "Goderåd", sadly now i'm left to hold to torch and bake them, watching how the irons we used to bake together on was so amazing, it filled me with that childhood glee i'd have when watching my grandma show me the ropes around baking the cookies and using the iron correctly! oh though another thing! my family uses another type of dough for making the "Goderåd", its a solid dough instead of the common runny one shown at 21:54 heres the recipe for any wafer makers out there! Flour: 500g Sugar: 250g Margerine: 300g 4 Eggs 1 tea spoon of vanilla sugar let the margerine heat to room temperature . mix everything together, place in a bowl with a cloth over and chill for 24 hours or more then get a plate and roll out small balls out of the bigger dough ball (use plenty of flour its quite sticky) place the small dough balls inside the iron and press down, tada! Thanks for the lovely video Torbjørn it was nice getting a view into how the irons i use are made! hope you have a great christmas and a happy new year!

Thank you! That was nice to read! I just want to add that this is not how these usually are made. The majority is simply cast iron.

Excellent! When I saw you laser the pattern on the face I thought you might be setting up to etch of engrave the pattern. Then watching you engrave it manually with only a Dremel tool I was amazed. That is a lot of work. Nice craftsmanship.
