Torchlight 2 - Farming Skulls of Limoany

To those who still play, tried this and got 8 limoany's in about 6 hours, and got about 1 million in cash which was great to get double sockets and triple enchantments on everything. Usually getting 3 or 4 chests per round, average 45-60 seconds per round. For speed just leave everything else on the ground, probably even the unique's because they are useless on a later level anyways.

still playing here with an Embermage , tried this one but i cannot get the exact phase beast challenge. I always get Lit the Brazier phase beast challenge, I have a lvl 61 embermage in NG+ anyway. Any suggestions?

Excellent guide, very useful. Thank you. Did a four hour farming session and got this: 5 Limoany 4 Lovantine 6 Macaburg 6 Meerko 3 Nopsil 1 Nephanic 4 Omorox and 2 or 3 dozen unique armor/weapons. Of course, the Limoany skulls are the only ones that really matter. Also, as metioned in your video, frost phase helps a lot to speed it up and to save all 4 chests.

As it was said a year ago, this is not the best location. I am doing the Maze challenge in NG+ Temple Steppes. When you've memorized the maze, it takes less than a minute to run it, assuming you ignore the Mysterious Gems that spawn a golden chest - which you should because the gems add an extra 40-50 seconds to the run; not worth it. I did farming sessions of both the Protect the Crystals challenge and the Maze challenge. Both - with a PB Embermage. I saved the topmost crystal every time with Hailstorm. My record on the crystal challenge was 34 seconds. The maze - 46 seconds. Yes, just forty-six seconds. I had my gold farming gear on, so no faster cast rate. Although I do use Haste VI, and I frost-phase several times on the maze. Two hours of the crystal challenge netted me only one Limoany. In the maze, I got four in less than an hour.

While it may be that the maze is a better place to farm, two hours each is hardly enough to "prove" that. Crystals are faster as you noticed and give more chests (you get two from the maze?). Others have reported getting far more than one Limoany in two hours. I don't have the time to thoroughly test this now, but you'd need to open 1000+ chests with each method to get a decent sample size.

Sure. I'm not convinced that the crystals are best, I never learned the maze that well. I could try making a new Embermage and test that in ideal conditions. Or otherwise maybe just spawn the right level of chests with the console and check there.

***** Will do then. By the way, it's worth noting, that the maze has several variations. The islands are located in the same spots, but the paths have different connections. So you have to re-memorize it every time you re-roll the world. And I still think it's worth it.

I'm farming skulls of crimone you can get this from one eyed willy or the chest with a lot of enemies when opened. Every 1 hr the One eyed willy dungeon is filled with everything again also great the named dead skeleton there can drop one eyed willy's other eye only very low chance

Not the best haul, but at least three Limoanies. I'm afraid that's just how the droprate is.

Finally got my 15 SoL, but I also got a ton of uniques to transmute. To anyone trying this method, I strongly recommend picking up some 2+ socket trash items while in the Phase Portal, so you can use them to hold more skulls into less inventory slots, thus getting more uniques/skulls in total before going to the city.

Yes, they can drop there. But keep in mind they're found mostly in the "better" version of the chests, and this method is simply a very fast way to farm them. It will take a lot longer when doing mapworks, but can be done of course.

Those skulls are soo rare, im tired of farming this challenge over and over again just to receive no Limoany at all. Lava beast challenge doesnt net those skulls as it is consedered too high level area, is it correct?

+Essah Futurama I'm afraid you're correct. Though this is a single player game largely, and if the grind is too much for you (understandably enough), you can just spawn yourself the Skulls using the console.

This is the only reasonable choise people are left with i guess. it is basically and feels like cheating, im concerned it will mostly kill my motivation to play the game :-/ , but those skulls are the only entrance tickets to the late game content.

+Essah Futurama It can be hard to stop yourself cheating once you started indeed, but as you said, the Skulls are somewhat necessary. I think when I geared up my second endgame character I just duped the Skulls as well.

you cannot, you can however send your pet to sell all the junk for extra gold so you can keep farming the area for an hour or longer without having to reroll. When you're REALLY full, just head over to lan game, reroll the world and start over after clearing out your inventory.

milkYw4i btw I already tested it and seems fine P.S. any idea for best place to get 1 whorlbarb skull (crit chance)... I've ben in avoid the lava for like 3 hours (ng +++)and every other skull dropped besides whorlbarb....

i'm afraid I can' help with that, I'm still farming limonays (currently got 8 i believe), runs are a little bit slow since my character's single player difficulty is elite, so I need to be a little bit careful to not get hit too much. casting an ice prison on top of the top right crystal does help me keep it alive rather consistently, and since I play vanilla, I can calmly clear out the monsters around the first two crystals before proceeding on to the latter two, since the monsters around them aren't properly loaded unless I move too far up.

Yes, this should work in the most recent version of the game. Make sure you're in NG+ and in the correct area, and then it's just a waiting game. Though I must say, ten attempts is more than it ever took me.

Hello! I'm about 3 years too late but do you happen to know if this works with synergies mod? Im NG+ and have farmed the frosted hills 3 times and havent been actually able to find a phase beast. I've followed your instructions for creating a lan game etc but still havent been able to find one. I have assumed that one definitely spawns every time and this is becoming frustrating. Thankyou for any assistance you can render!

I am not certain that a phase beast spawns every time, but it's definitely not very rare. I don't know precisely what the synergies mod changes about the game, so if it affects enemy spawns, it's possible that phase beasts are affected. Perhaps there is a list of changes done by the mod that you can look up? Otherwise, three times without a phase beast might just be a case of quite bad luck, it's hard to say for sure. You can try disabling the mod and checking a few times to get a feel for the frequency of spawns I guess.

@@pianopro9 I don't think it's more common to spawn there, from what I can tell it spawns in a random location (maybe replacing a standard enemy?) and could be anywhere. Then again, at least in vanilla, I never had any trouble getting this farm going, so the mod may well affect things. The worst I ever had was four attempts to get the right challenge.

I seem to have run into a problem with this method. I level up while killing the goblins. I started as lvl 50ish and now I am 63. I don't think the skulls will be dropping any more. Am I right or wrong about this ?

The drops depend on the level of the area, not the level of the character. So as long as you don't change your NG+ cycle, the skulls will still drop. That being said, it is possible that doing the Maze challenge will yield more skulls. Either way though, you can level up as much as you like and it will only help by making the farm easier.

Yes, that would work. You need to be in NG+ though, there is no way around that.

Do you have to keep rerolling the world? I’ve done this multiple times but after finding and kill the phase beast. It takes me to another phase world.

First, make sure you're in the right area and in the correct NG+ cycle. But even then, there are multiple phase beast challenges that can spawn. It can take multiple attempts to find the right one. And for that, you do need to keep rerolling the world until you found the crystal challenge.

best place to farm is Tarroch's Tomb. However I don't know If they drop there but there are a lot of chests at the end. you might consider making a farm character and use the console to cheat get to the tomb in ng+ and set your level to the required level of the drop and try farming it there.

+xenowerks The tomb has a lot of chests, but are they really this fast to get to? In addition, I think the chests in the Tomb are already too high level for the Skulls of Limoany.

+tofukanone you can +1 the game in a half hour and another 15 to get from +1 start to tarrochs tomb, say about an hour total for leeway. so that's not too long, only question is will they drop the item if you are the required level. I don't know cause I haven't tried it but if its a level requirement of the player not the zone then theres a chance they will and theres 23ish chests there. also its the place to go for the 105 set gear so that's a bonus. if I have time ill go there with my engy and level down and see if any drop.

+xenowerks Well, it's about the level of the area. Though the Tomb is a slightly unusual place, you never know. On the other hand, I'd love to see you get from NG to NG+ in half an hour. The fastest run I am aware of is just under one hour and uses major glitches that were removed in recent version. Not that it matter, if it takes ten hours to set up but yields more skulls, it'd be a preferable farming location. Finally, in order to be better than this Phase Beast challenge, you would have to be able to get the 23 Chests in well under half an hour, and I was under the impression that it takes a while to beat the Tomb.

+tofukanone cheat with a farm character. basically just roll a new toon, open console levelup 99, strength, dexterity, magic and defense all get 1000 then just go strait for the bosses and nothing else. game is a lot shorter when you don't fight everything. If your doing it fresh with no console ya the game will take longer to +1.anyways I ran the tomb a fue times, the tomb takes 10 minutes a run it takes about 1 minute per difficulty wave with an ember quake engy. I didn't get the drop but Id have to run it more to know for certain if it does or not.

+xenowerks Oh yeah, with the console you can obviously get a lot faster, I was only thinking about "legit" runs. If the Tomb indeed yields 23 blue chests in 10 minutes, that would be quite fast. But keep in mind, if the chest can drop 105 gear, it *cannot* drop the Skull. Sadly, it is an endgame socketable that doesn't drop in the endgame. The chests need to be in an area associated with levels 53-62 (That's map level, not character). Since I don't have TL2 installed at the moment, what is the "recommended" level you see when entering the tomb?

Mapworks are only a choice if you're beyond the right playthrough for the chests to be at the right level, because in Mapworks you can still get lower level chests. I still don't understand why the best damage reduction skulls don't drop in the endgame anymore :D

Gelo De Guzman The drop rate is somewhat low, but I have gotten multiple ones from this farm. I am unaware of a better place to get them, but I know that sometimes it has taken up to half an hour until I got one to drop.

I speedran it for an HOUR AND A HALF saving all four chests in a matter of seconds, got full inventory of uniques, other types of skulls, but 0 Limoany. 30 minutes is pretty lucky for a Limoany... However, on the other hand, some while ago i farmed 3 Limoanys in around 3 - 4.5 hours... So it does take a while to farm some... Cheers.

Yes, this should definitely work. It may take some time to find the correct Phase Beast Challenge, but this was never removed from the game. Of course, finding the full set you need for a character is still a slow process.

No, any chest that corresponds to enemies in the same level range can drop those skulls. This challenge is merely the quickest way to get a lot of the right chest to spawn in a short time. Alternatively, there is also the labyrinth challenge which is apparently quite good, but I never really looked into it much.

@@adamkencki Ok, I'll break it down for you. Your assumption that decking yourself out with Skulls of Limoany makes you 'almost invincible' is wrong. You need them to just survive when playing high difficulties, especially when adding mods that increase enemy stats. So your complaint seems somewhat baseless. On top of that, as with any other game, the point of it is recreation. As such, a player that enjoys minmaxing their build and gear would find advice on how to find said helpful. It seems you have a certain idea of how a game is to be played and cannot conceive of there being people enjoying other aspects of a game. Which seems an especially silly assumption to make about an Action RPG like Torchlight 2. In summary, if you enjoy the story, more power to you. Just don't assume others find the same thing fun.
