I'd love if she did an entire album of songs using this piano. It creates such a haunting sound. I remember in the liner notes that the original piano was just broken down - so essentially they're recreating it by whatever means.

It only happened for that 1994 world tour. It wasnt complete, so limited use, combined with the break up of a long term relationship with the guy who helped make that piano, and then she leanred harpsichord for the 1996 tour and there wasnt room for it. The harpsichord proved to be alot of work to keep maintained on tour and not feasible. The 1998 tour was primarily plugged in and she had personal problems, thats where things started to change from what we knew, to what we know.

@@miguelmarquez4192 well thanks for sharing the video and the information. I first saw her on tour in 1994. But she didn’t have this piano in Cleveland. Such a beautiful sound they achieved by messing around with the interior. many classical and experimental composers have used prepared instruments. prepared piano means screwing with the strings, putting objects in and between them... it changes the piano in unpredictable ways, kind of making a percussion section out of a single instrument. i've played on a few... always magical

@Grinnygog1975 That is why THIS piano sounds so much better AND louder - without a soundboard, there's no volume! Did you ever subscribe to REALLY DEEP THOUGHTS? I believe they featured an interview with Tori about the prepared piano. The original was a very old upright that Eric Rosse (and I believe Philip Shenale) practically destroyed. They detuned it. They muted 2 of the 3 strings of each note. They put all sorts of stuff in the key mechanisms. And I VIVDLY remember that Eric smashed the soundboard with something - maybe a hammer.

I think 'prepared' just means there is some kind of mute resting on the piano strings to keep them from resonating.. It gives it a very 'oriental' sound.. as always her voice is chilling. Great clip.!!
@miguelmarquez41923 жыл бұрын
Ages late. Her ex and a friend demolished an old upright piano and fitted it with "tubular bells" rather than strings. So youre hearing hammers hitting the tubes. It wasnt a full 88 of them of course so use of the piano was limited to this song and thats that!

@@miguelmarquez4192 ...and those are the "bells" for "her" (her lost friend). I understand the title now- ty 🌹
@pianomist15 жыл бұрын
It's commonly referred to as a "prepared piano". You can look it up for more information. Composers like John Cage and Henry Cowell were poineers in using this technique... but it can be credited even before them. There is a Wikipedia page about prepared pianos... if you want to know more. The page also credits Tori for using a prepared piano too.

Isn't it awesome!!?? It was great that she brought that piano on tour with her just for the ONE song! But I have to slightly correct you, this piano that she toured with was not the original prepared piano that was used during the recording of UNDER THE PINK. This piano was prepared just for the tour - the original was too fragile to transport all over the world.
