I hate how they labeled her right away, “white girl pop artist” I love that she stood up for herself and explained that her roots are much deeper than that. And fast forward and she’s out here with TWO Grammys with a GOSPEL album!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼 love this girl so much ❤️❤️

Keir Bo Yea, that junk kinda frustrated me too. She either deleted her old channel, or deleted A LOT of her old videos. Cause I remember the very first video I watched of hers was back in 09 and she had did the cover of La Roux - Bullet Proof, and she killed that junk better than the actual original artist. I was like this chick is frikkin fierce with the vocals. It's crazy tho, it's taken (counting from that video) 6 or 7 years for her to finally get her due recognition. People all lookin' at her like she's some new artist, and I'm over here looking like FINALLY my girl got put on! lol. She so deserves all of the shine tho.

It's fustrating when a nationally known radio station does not know who Tori Kelly is. Black people were not saying "who the f is this white chick"... we were saying "You betta sing Tori". How can yall promote music when you don't know who singers are. I personally first heard of Tori when she covered Justin's "Suit and Tie" and was at least 3 years old
@blahblah991969 жыл бұрын
maudymar She's mainly pop tho...
@JourneyofaProducer9 жыл бұрын
Jane Doe I would accept that reply, but as she stated she is a mix. Her first single had a DJ Mustard vibe to it. Some people say pop because she is not black. Like NeYo always says, if I sing, I'm R&B but if Sam Smith sings the same song, it's pop. I would give them a reason to not know her because she is "pop". So since they are Hip Hop and R&B, why do they have her on the show? Because she is dope. And they, Hot 97, should know dope artist.
@acpjr9 жыл бұрын
maudymar Interesting points. Do you think NeYo was complaining that he is considered R&B? Because if Sam Smith or Justin Timberlake were considered R&B artists, I think I'd feel some type of way.
@daiell099 жыл бұрын
maudymar A lot of people was saying who is this white girl.
@JourneyofaProducer9 жыл бұрын
Actually NeYo didn't complain, but he gets shunned when he does a pop record. His take is that if other Pop artist can do R&B, why can't he go from R&B to Pop. Rico Love also said that Sam Smith is R&B. "Disclosure" is an R&B song with a Dance beat underneath it. Justin was Pop with NSYNC. Cry Me a River, Mirrors, and What Goes Around, are R&B songs and I'm sure he'd say the same.

It's funny some people keep saying "she's white and needs to stop trying to be anything else". She's not trying to be anything. She was asked what her ethnic background is and she told them her father is Jamaica and Puerto Rican while her mother is Irish and German. She went further on to say that she doesn't care what people identify her as. What's important is the music. The one that keeps bringing up her ethnicity and is trying to make it seem like she needs "street cred" is Ebro. It's the most small minded thing a person can do. If her music speaks to certain people despite race or sexual orientation, so be it. #musichasnopreference

@MissUdenGoofed9 жыл бұрын
Isn't it still a problem tho?
@acpjr9 жыл бұрын
Albus Tigerblood Can you define the problem a little more? I went to billboard.com/charts/pop-songs and in my view some of the artists listed there would never be considered pop when Mariah was around.
@Veon_Ray9 жыл бұрын
Lol, Mariah Carey?? Waaay before her, there was Teena Marie (RIP). No calculated runs, riffs, & high notes, Teena Marie's voice was just pure Soul. There also was a little something in the 70's we called 'Blue Eyed Soul'. Which included such singer/songwriters as Hall & Oats, Michael McDonald/The Doobie Brother, & Kenny Loggins, just to name a few. These artist are all known as soulful vocalist who created their own soulful music. Not getting whatever r&b/hip hop producer that happens to be hot & then writing to their music. Later came George Michael & Lisa Stansfield, again, just to name a few....& again waaay before Mariah.
@humbled92_Mister9 жыл бұрын
Veez World teena marie is white though, not mixed race...mariah like tori kelly is mixed...so these white artists you mentioned(blue eyed soul) are not comparable....
@Veon_Ray9 жыл бұрын
ImperfectbutRedeemed yeah that was whole my point. There are no "race boundaries" if an artist is of mixed race & are doing pop or r&b music. But there was for these artist, because they where/are white, & they were creating r&b & soul music. Think about it, there was no "race boundaries" convo when Drake came out, because he's of mixed race. But Eminem, was another story...& like Teena Marie, he still is. Because they dropped the racial boundaries for the genre of music that came authentically to them.

I just watched the BET awards the other day on tape. I am black and a huge fan of Tori Kelly. The girl is a phenomenal singer, a great guitarist (go listen to her Michael Jackson cover of ''PYT'' at the Roxy) and she's fine as hell. When I saw her walk out on stage for the Smokey Robinson tribute I knew that most black people were going to throw shade at her because she looks white. I knew they would be like ''Why they get a white girl for this?'' Well now you know why. I knew that as soon as she opened her mouth to sing that the she would win everybody over. She has just as much soul as any black girl in America. I am so happy for Tori. She is young but she's been doing the music thing for a long time and is finally getting the recognition she deserves. It's about time.

Let's not be naive . If you're "white " looking pretty and can sing well , you WiLL get a record deal . This is the way of the musical universe especially for black music. "Older people " know this . Younger people are naive to this . White people doing black music take precedence over black artist of the same talent. Hasn't changed been like this since the beginning. Ed Sheehan, Sam smith , Justin , Tori ...all good artist . A black person of the same talent would not have the same marketability as a blonde looking girl doing the same thing. All companies are looking for the white equivalent of a predominantly black industry to sell to the white population , hence why they put her in the Pop Category even though she's doing RNB

B OB astute. Even Chris Brown said "it's 1935 in this music industry"
@LosAnggraito9 жыл бұрын
B OB I agree that white people in the industry might have certain opportunities artists of color might not have. But with all due respect, what is black people music? Your mentality is what's wrong with the industry today. R&B, Soul, Gospel, it's MUSIC. Not something limited to one race. Can we please break out of that bubble? And the white privilege thing is irrelevant in Tori's case anyway, she's been doing this shit since she was 6 man. Signed when she was 12. White privilege didn't get her to where she's at now, so miss Tori with that

Wow. I can't believe they are in the music industry, daily, and had not heard of Tori Kelly. I also wish we could go back to the days where men showed respect for women by not using foul language in their presence. I felt so bad that Tori had to sit there and listen to Ebro's foul mouth. But, she handled it well. It is so sad that we have become a nation of vulgarity and that using profanity in front of any and everybody is normalcy.
@deezel31769 жыл бұрын
Kellie Alston Kellie, I thank you for speaking out. I definitely understand where you're coming from and I'm a man and I can't stand it myself. Many folks these days just don't have any respect for others and a lot of us men don't have respect for women these days. It's sad but that's the way the United States is. In our culture at the moment people are raising kids without values or morals and it's just carrying over to everything else, and as men we just need to learn how to respect one another in relation to how we treat each other and how we talk to one another. Keep standing for what you stand for, I thank God for you.

Kellie Alston For all you know she speaks the saw way. Get a grip. Women have progressed past that.
@KellieAlston9 жыл бұрын
softbreezy If she speaks the same way, she would have. Whether she speaks that way or not, there is something called etiquette and professionalism. When you meet anyone for the first time, you should be able to express your ideas without using expletives and vulgar language. It has nothing to do with the progression of women. Your standard, how you speak to a young woman, has nothing to do with her, it has everything to do with you and your home training.
@KellieAlston9 жыл бұрын
softbreezy The fact that you are comfortable with a grown man speaking in such a manner to a young woman on public radio for others to hear is truly sad and speaks volumes about the lack of respect and morality that is pervasive in our society. There is a time and a place for everything and this was not the time or the place. Period.
@softbreezy60529 жыл бұрын
Kellie Alston Doesn't mean she would have at all! I know people who curse only in certain spaces or only when they want to. Open your mind, lol. why the fuck does it matter what her race is. she is amazing at singing. she is real and authentic and true. she doesn't have to show her body to be amazing. she doesn't have to sing about sex. I love her more and more.

I'm black but I admit, we always jump on white people about being racist when sometimes we are the racist individuals out there, damn does it matter if she's black or white? All that matters is she's talented af

It's always about race. Folks can't ever just be talented. F*** racial barriers. Talent does not have a specific race or gender

I'm so proud of myself for actually knowing who Tori was before the BET Awards. I say the awards and then seen her and I was like, cool she's there. Then Tori got on stage and she did so good I was like woow. That's real, raw talent.
