Anyone who is still looking at this, I myself struggled with reading up til age 11, when i deeply invested into reading short stories and books, teachers encouraged me to do spelling and play keyboard spelling games, by the time i turned 12 i could read quite well without issues from that moment onwards i vastly developped my reading comprehension via pouring over stories and novels and did the same thing into highschool that was many years ago I have now written a few books of my own in my adulthood I would encourage any parents to please be patience with your child and try to encourage their school to get them into reading lessons it helped me greatly as a kid

I’m not a homeschool mom but my 9 year old is struggling to fluently read. It’s caused me so much worry and stress and her school definitely makes her and I both feel like she’s very behind. Thank you so, so much for this video! I am a homeschooling mom of three boys. ( Technically two now since my oldest finished school last year!) My youngest son, 11, struggles so much with reading. He has a hard time with fluency, but he comprehends everything he reads. It just takes him so long to get through even just a paragraph. Like your son, he gets super nervous in social situations and even has family members upset that he won't read to them, then they make comments that I'm not teaching my kids. It can be so hurtful sometimes to hear such comments, especially from those who do not see what truly goes on here in our home. This video has made me feel much better and given me hope!

My wife and I are foster parents and we just took in 2 girls after Christmas, one 3 and the other 12.. both sisters. The older one has a reading level of a first grader due to living in another country for most of her schooling years and missing that education. My wife lent her a copy of her grimm fairytales book because the 12 year old likes horror and we thought the original stories might interest her. She spent one night reading a chapter which are usually a few pages and it took her a half hour but that accomplishment alone made her feel really proud. Definitely agree with number 3 on your list.

Next school year I am finally deciding to homeschool. We have spent many years (as my son will be entering 4th grade next year, it makes 5 years) spending hours after school for additional areas of weakness. Those areas are in spelling, reading (basically all language arts categories beyond his amazing vocabulary and oral skills), and math. He is still behind his peers, and I have strongly noted his dyslexia, and even his teachers have reluctantly agreed to seeing the same things. Their reluctance lies with the state not recognizing dyslexia as a learning disability (which I had him tested for, but they noted none, as, again, dyslexia is not recognized in my state). My years of hard work have payed off, as he is not too far behind, and makes huge strides every year, but I am done with the system. It does not love my child, and I want more than ever to foster a love of learning within him. My homeschool aspirations will lie in mastery, interest lead assignments, and letting him marvel at his own growth. They continue to push him forward and compare him to his peers (and adamantly refuse to hold him back despite my many years of suggestions, and this is the second school system he has been in). I'm going to let my son be a kid, and instead of seeing himself through the eyes of limitation, I want him to see his potentials. I wish I had made this decision sooner, and even though my spouse is still not fully on board, I have the confidence in myself and my son that we can make this work. No more 7 hours of school to come home to two+ more hours of homework. Sadly the year is still going, and we still have tons of homework to do every afternoon, but I am quite done with robbing him of his childhood. As someone who loved and thrived in school, I never thought I would picture institutionalized education as being the demon I see it as today. Thank you so much for your videos. They make me feel that, even as just a human, anything is possible with love, patience, and forgiveness (of self and others).

GREAT ADVICE!!! I agree with you ToriAnn. I've been homeschooling for 10 years and my experience teaching my son to read was drastically different than with my firstborn daughter. He struggled to read until about age 10. He's 11 now and finally falling in love with reading. I did all the things you mention in this video and with time and patience, it happened. I had to find the key to his motivation. I challenged him to read the entire Magic Tree House series for $100 and he's almost there. He also earns 1 min of screen time for every 1 minute he reads. He proudly told me today he's at 20 hours and he decided he's not going to track his time anymore. When he told me he has so many books he wants to read, it made my heart sing. Now he, his sister and I all travel with a book in the car. He even brought his copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to dinner out. When most kiddos these days have a device in their hand, my once reluctant reader now chooses to delight in a book. I look forward to sharing this new book series that you recommend with him. I'm perfectly okay with him reading books below his age level. He just needed some practice and confidence. Patience and reasonable expectations on my part was key. The All About Reading curriculum was also instrumental for him. Every kid is difference and they each have their own timeline for developing. I wish our society understood that.

Dyslexia is much broader and more comprehensive than the narrow definition sometimes given by a diagnosis. You can help give resources and support even if you can't get an official "name." My kids have never been "diagnosed" but they definitely have some form of dyslexia.

So True: The Vision issues. My 2nd grader started Covid, remote learning. We had no idea any of these symptoms were going on: Words moving around on page, intolerance of computer screen, dizziness and headaches. Now that it's over, he will mention things from before often. Like, before V.T. I couldn't see this and that he used to just walk next to me and do what I did, like step up on a curb because he couldn't see it. Thank goodness for Covid -yeah, who knew! We graduated from a 9mo process to correct his vision processing, tracking and focus with a local Ophthalmologist who specialized in Vision Therapy. Covered by some insurances but an absolute necessary for children. Side Note: He has/had 20/20 vision and was tested every year since the age of 4. Each of those evaluations was with an Optometrist. I am so thankful to the Ophthalmologist we visited that did not specialize but suggested Vision Therapy with a competing Ophtha. Forever thankful to her, we changed his life as soon as we could! I think all parents should have children tested with a full evaluation from an Ophthalmologist specializing in Vision Therapy. He is fully recovered and behind due to the years of inability to read and comprehend without him even knowing that was not normal. The doctor said that she has never seen or heard of anyone regressing after treatment. Prior to him coming home to remote learning and all of this being revealed, he was diagnosed Dyslexic in the public school system. He's now 10, first year fully homeschooled and been working with a private Dyslexic Tutor 2x a week. He went from reading at a kinder level 7 months ago, to having just started leaning Fry's 4th 100 words & Barton Program. He still does not want to read to me but he is LOVING for me to read Diary of a Wimpy Kid to him. He attempts some reading at times but I don't push it. It's such an achievement to be where we are today. Less than a year ago, he dreaded seeing me get close to a book now he brings the book to me to read. I think we're almost there, just need a little more confidence. Thanks for this video(s)! I need all the encouragement I can get.

This is so helpful! My 10 year old is a struggling reader. I just took him to the eye doctor today. He said reading glasses is not necessary but, might be helpful. I said no initially but, now I am second guessing it after watching this video.

Sorry for the slow reply! Depending on your budget, you may be able to get a reasonably priced pair. We didn't pay tons for the glasses my son needed -- although he could have picked out frames and paid a lot more. We just didn't want to spend that money and ended up buying a display pair. Also - if the doctor was a regular eye-doctor, they may not have tested for everything that glasses can help for. In our area, we are really lucky and there is a doctor that specializes in additional eye issues. He was the one who recommended the reading glasses. So you may want to research and get a second opinion.

Your videos have been so helpful! I have been doing our midyear review, and the area I feel like we are struggling with specifically is spelling and writing. I home school our 5 kids, the oldest is 10 and youngest is 1. Our oldest has dyslexia and has been making progress with reading this year. Our biggest area of difficulty this year is writing and spelling. I feel like we have tried spelling a lot of different ways, and it isn't sticking. We have used All About Spelling mostly. I would love a video that gives your insight on how you have had success with this area. By the way, my oldest LOVES the Nathan Hale books your recommended! FYI I taught computers in grades 3 to 8 for a small independent private school in Miami, Florida. I also substituted for them when needed. I did a lot private tutoring and had several struggling readers who learned how and then became successful academically.

I agree it is not easy. It's super difficult to find appropriate books that are "easy to read" that will interest a middle school or even upper elementary aged child. You have to get the eye problem or even speech problems out of the way first, just in case that's all there is to it . . There's no replacement for a patient parent who will sit there side by side with a good fit book.

What you are saying is great for white kids because they have privilege and more opportunity, but Black and Brown kids need to know that a love for learning must be executed because it is about their survival. Their ancestors hands were chopped off if they were caught trying to read. A white person teaching a slave to read could be ostracized, jailed, fined or the punishment could be as extreme as hanging. Learning can be a positive experience but the bottomline is; it is hard work. Homeschooling parents must have patience, creativity, use praise and encouragement and authoritative coaching. You must learn your child' s personality. Some kids need a push. They thrive when they are pushed through a fear and then succeed. Some kids are pushed and they cry, they are sensitive, so they need incentives and goals approach. Miseducation in America is a deliberate plot. Parents must wake up. Starting at 2 1/2 to 3, children can learn phonics and to write their name and to write basic sentences. Parents don't forget reading comprehension. This is the next stage of reading. When you read a story to your child make sure they understand the message of the story. Ask him or her various questions about the story. Follow the pattern: Who? What? Where? When? Why? & How? Have them interpretation the story with a drawing and have your child try to write simple sentences. The girl was kind. The dog is brown. The educational system has shifted and those in power do not want this generation to be thinkers, smart, innovative, problem solvers. Sad, but true.

Just never give up , and remember tell a trust adult about the bullying and if that doesn't work stand up to the bully , you have to show a bully that you will defend yourself at all cost . I wish you well . Talk to your parents about this too

Look for an optometrist who does FUNCTIONAL vision exams. Not many of them do that and they’re often booked out for weeks...so get it booked and expect to wait. If your child has functional vision issues, they will offer possibly corrective lenses and/or therapy. There are actually several issues that can cause functional vision problems. There’s an optometrist with a KZbin channel who does these types of exams and offers therapy in her practice and she’s very informative. I can’t remember her name but just search functional vision therapy.

My little cousin is 9 and she has epilepsy. The kids in her class do journals but she doesn't. They don't even let her test. There no way that she should be in any grade past k5. I work with her. every study I ever heard about says that reading is best taught as early as possible and not when they start asking about it, I don't know where you got that info from but I think that's the 80s myth that also caused kids to not be potty trained by the time they have to go to school in the Netherlands and parents thinking that's normal even though in belgium all kids are toilet trained by the time they go to school when they're 2 and a half.

I've never heard of any myth of teaching kids to read later in their childhood, at the kids discretion no less! This is just crazy Christian fundamentalism.

Throw away all electronics Cut off the internet And tell them only after they learn to read can they have them back. No going to friends, they not coming over with their phones either. Be lucky if we keep the cable for tv. Im cool kid, we do this til you can read. Pick a choice before I pick it for you Isnt a popularity contest, its life and survival of the smartest

I have 3 kids. My oldest is 10 she picked up ready so fast and easy. My youngest is 6 and he reads great for a 1st grader and is so eager to learn new words. My oldest son is 8 and he is struggling. The things he learned and knew it's like he forgot everything. He have a poor memory, he also is in speech therapy. I didn't really notice a problem but he been home for two years now due to covid so I'm able to see what he have problems with.

My middle child is 10. And she struggles to read and write. She forgets her notes easily. In India, we learn by-heart notes; and it really disheartens her. Covid has helped me understand her problem. But I feel really sad that I cant concentrate just on her... What she can say, she cant write in the correct spelling 70%

Omg this is my 8 year old son forget everything he reads it’s been a struggle. Is your son reading yet? If so what helped

@@kellij4301 Yes, he is reading more fluently now. We are still doing cyber school, not because of covid tho. We practice reading a short story everyday. I made him index cards with high frequency words. The key is to find what they are interested in, and don't make them practice too long or it can get boring or feel like a punishment.

@@Anime_no_joō my son is still barely reading he has gotten better but he’s just not interested which has me frustrated and he sees that and that’s not helpful at all. His school has pretty much given up on him they said he has intellectual disability but I absolutely refuse to believe that seeing I had to force them to do something to help him, I’m stressed he’s stressed 😩 it’s just been hard to truly help him. I refuse to give up but I’m so lost on what I need to do

@@kellij4301 I was in the same place, I tried different activities and it seemed nothing was working. You just got to keep trying different things. If he likes video games, you can use that. My son likes fortnite and it's a KZbin video of sight words in fortnite. It's a song and my son liked it. You can find lots of fun word songs on KZbin. You can make a game with sight words written on index cards.
