This jig leaves much to be desired when sharpening roughing gouges (2:14). Your gouge is held in the SVS-50 purely by the top set screw. If your gouge is not perfectly perpendicular to the SVS-50, beyond levels where your eye can even tell, then your tool will not sharpen evenly side to side as you rotate. There is nothing keeping your tool perpendicular like this, in fact the set screw tries its best to torque your tool out of alignment when you secure it. Your tool should also not be rotated around its own length axis in the jig (the bottom should sit perfectly under the set screw), or it will make this perpendicular issue even worse resulting in a very uneven grind. Again, nothing keeps the tool aligned in this axis either. Lastly, when you sharpen the tool you must awkwardly keep the SVS-50 pressed forward into the support bar. While continuously pulling upwards on the tool handle, so there is downwards pressure into the grinding wheel. Do this while you rotate the SVS, and these angles become very challenging. If you slip for a second, and your pressure upwards overpowers your pressure forwards into the support bar, you are going to suddenly pull your tool in a random direction and ruin your bevel. Start all over making a new bevel. An entirely different tool should have been designed with a hole that the support bar could slide through (like the TTS-100), to lock in the distance from the wheel securely. Then include a mechanism so the gouge can be rotated side-to-side while locked into the support bar. Basically like the SVD-186. I see other people saying the SVS-50 is such a poor jig that they are using the SVD-186 and just making roughing gouges with wings.

Hi Collin! The SVS-50 is a much appriciated jig all over the world. When used in the correct way it sharpens your roughing gouges to a perfect result. Please contact our Support Team at support@tormek.se and we will help you getting it right for you. Stay sharp!

Why does the SVS-50 jig in this video differ so much from the diecast POS that Tormek sells? The unit in the video looks finely made with clear angle markings, but it's not at all what the actual jig looks like. I wish I could post a picture of the jig they sell to highlight the deception in this video. As for performance, what CC-gv6us said regarding the actual performance of this jig is right on the mark.

Hej Scientist1967 The one in this film is the old one. the new one is much more precise and has some modified functions compared to that in the film. These films will be updated in the future.

I have a question and a comment... Comment.... I have a Carter and Sons Skew and it doesn't seat in the v-groove lock. It would be nice to have a solid bar to lock in it place vs the "v" lock on the screw. Question.... The skew is 30 degrees. Does that mean I set the jig to 15 or 30 degrees? I'm guessing 15 but would like to be sure. None of the vids in the series actually talk about that....

Is this jig also for mortise chisels? My mortise chisels don't fit the SE-77 as they are too thick and I'm looking for an alternative Tormek jig to sharpen these chisels.

You can try to sharpen those with the SVS-38 Short Tool Jig: tormek.com/en/products/grinding-jigs/svs-38-short-tool-jig That should work from our experience. If it does not fit in there you could have a look at the SVS-50 Multi Jig: tormek.com/en/products/grinding-jigs/svs-50-multi-jig

Hej, no this SVS-50 is for woodturning chisels, they are sharpened in a different way. The jig can be used also for other wood turning tools.* The SE-77 is not suitable for these tools. //Wolfgang
