There is something truly terrifying about these type of games that defies all horror in both movies and video games alike, it's the suspense of not knowing what's in the next room, the MIDI music adds tension to your suspense and you're left with an empty solution that could possibly be fatal based on the decision of where you started and where you will die.

Both the good, and bad endings open up some interesting possibilities. I feel the bad ending is the more likely one. some kid playing this alone, and with NO help would most likely die during the end fight at least once, and then get stuck in the game. The good ending opens up some fun time-lines though. Like what if this is just ONE copy of this game? The Kid, having beaten the game, realizes what is going on. They set out on a mission to find AND beat every copy of this game. like some kind of speed running exorcist. Very good game.

2:06:18 Now that's a reference for the ages. Still, it's a bit ironic looking back at the crash of 1983... E.T. was not that bad especially considering some of the games that came before and after it. I'm looking at you "CR" and "Ride to Hell: Retribution" respectively. P.S. If you don't know what "CR" refers to then you're better off never finding out about that "game".
@neoqwerty3 ай бұрын
Took me a bit to realize it was... that very very specific old game that was at least three kinds of yikes. But there was one that was worse than CR: the one that's "japanese subway molester simulator" and got covered by Something Awful as one of the few games even Japan ended up banning for the yikes factor. At least Ride To Hell was so incompetent and janky and ridiculous that it was basically if someone took Digital Homicide's FPS games, Big Rigs, and crammed a half-functional censored Hot Coffee in there, and then overbaked it and shipped it out in a panic, resulting in a game that's bad to play but funny to watch people torturing themselves with it. CR was just bad and uncomfortable, both things that the subway s!x offense simulator does a thousand times worse.
@johndough81153 ай бұрын
A lot of people do not fully understand the so called "Crash". The average person, never experienced any Crash. The arcades were still Hoppin, and console + computer game sales were still happening. The crash was all on the Corporate end. You see.. The arcade operators, already had a TON of great arcade machines, that were Earning very well. But arcade companies kept putting out more Machines... and the Operators had no more space for them + didnt want to remove good earning machines. As such, many refused to purchase many of the new Arcade Games. Not only that... But there was also a notable drop in Quality, at a certain point in time... where smaller companies were putting out Garbage tier games, that didnt Earn well. This caused a lot of backlash from the Operators, as it made them far more careful in their Purchases. Before that point, they often just bought whatever came out... and it generally worked out for them, because the early 80s were Packed full of Addictive / Successful "Bangers". Because the Arcade companies couldnt sell all of their New Arcade Machines... this created a Spiral of Financial Chaos... which threatened to destroy many of the big companies. A lot of the smaller companies, imploded, and vanished. I believe they were also over-inflating the Console and PC Software market too... So that also added to the Corporate "Crash". The Corporate heads, expected Demand to maintain at the same levels. But they didnt really understand a few key factors. 1) That the Arcade Operators were eventually going to run out of Space. and 2) The average American, has a Limited Budget... to spend on new Games. 3) The exponentially growing number of new Competing Game Companies... adding even more Software / Machines, into the Market. So basically, they over-flooded the market with Product, and there were a lot of Corporate financial losses, as a result. But to the average Joe Gamer... Nothing changed. We still played Arcade games. And we still bought PCs, Consoles, and Games. A Similar thing often happened in the Movie Industry, in the 80s. The studios would release like 4 to 7 FANTASTIC movies, all at the same time. But the average family, couldnt afford to see that many movies, within such a short span of time. As such, they might only see like 2 or 3 of those films... and the others would end up Losing Money, and "Flop"... despite being Great movies. These movies would eventually make money, via VHS and DVD/Bluray sales... as well with TV plays (Licensing / AD Money). However, some of the smaller Studios that produced these films, may have been destroyed, long before the eventual sales came rolling in.
@livanbard3 ай бұрын
@@johndough8115there also retail crash where many chains refused to get Atari products and some other companies stuff too. Because of 2 things: price and the sonic panic (even this game references that) nobody cared about Atari consoles by 83 and people who cared were getting them second hand. Arcades were getting the much better japanese machines too. That's why Nintendo got the reputation of turning that scenery around with the ideia of selling the NES as a toy product, and a great deal of focus on family friendly advertising so they avoided the satanic panic. The name change for games and censorship were also due to the panic. Take contra for example it was named that in America because it implied the kids were fighting communists instead of demon looking aliens. That's perfect for Americans of the 80s.
