I was a little disappointed to see this only had a little over 1,000 views - but I'll just consider it the "Best Kept Secret of Tornado Documentaries." Thanks for what you do guys, and for inspiring others to delve into Sever Weather Sciences.

I'm 13, and I love watching Storm Chasers. The thing I want to do when I get to around 18 or 20 is to storm chase and intercept a tornado! This has to be the best informational video yet! I love the DOW's work it's unique, I feel safe in big trucks and the DOW is exactly what I like to be in during a storm. Scary that there's a tornado and both of the DOWs are stuck. Keep chasing and never stop! I'ma subscriber. Thank god no one was hurt.

I was wondering if that pod was going to be hoisted and destroyed, but it stayed intact. Nice. The data collected about the multiple vortices converging into one was something I'd never seen, and makes me look at that tornado in a different light. I didn't know they could do that. I always thought it was one giant monster. It's like that was its final boss form. Hank was out there chasing that one! One of my favorite videos of his. I knew I recognized the instrumental. It had a total Pecos Hank vibe... and it was! So cool that he agreed to let you use his music - an awesome touch from a fellow storm chaser.

Thanks for the comment, OhKayGo! The pods likely wouldnt withstand EF-5 for prolonged time but did survive an EF-4 just one week before this event! Some paint loss and anemometer damage was all I recall. Projects like this become a boom for atmospheric science, identifying small scale processes previously unknown. It really is an exciting time to bury your head in the data, or a quality documentary! And yeah, Hank is a true OG... very thankful for his sharing such a perfect soundtrack~

Are the pickups rentals/leasers? Because honestly, they just need some off road tires, they obviously have 4WD and limited slip diffs. The DOW’s being on commercial chassis, I can’t think of a good way to make them more off road capable other than keeping some boards/blocks on hand or something to shove under the wheels for them to ride up on. Maybe a driving lesson or two for the interns 😉 Nice video!
@ChaoticHorizons4 жыл бұрын
No interns driving those beasts, however it does highlight the unfortunate reality of tight budgets as NSF (National Science Foundation) funding is cut more and more (See Arecibo). It's painful to see such incredible equipment, led by incredible people, in front of an incredible storm only to fall short because of some bad tires or lack of winch, etc. Thanks for the comment!

Are thse the only vehicles that the CSWR owns now? I remember back during Vortex2 they had almost 20 (maybe more) individual vehicles.

@@ItsLilRobs Good question Robbie! This is indeed their particular full fleet, however they have been paired with other research agencies and university partnerships that bolstered the crews to over 100 persons involved with the PECAN campaign. In a new development the Dopplar On Wheels facility has moved from Boulder, CO to Urbana, IL... so exciting news on the way for the future of research!

The realities of funding science with grants is a sad one these days, basically do you spend that last $10,000 on scientific instruments or truck upgrades you may rarely use. I wish I was rich and could fund these beautiful organizations to their full potential. God damn partisan politics shrinking the funds of what makes America unique. We own that DATA !!

What's the most simultaneous tornados on the ground at one time?
@ChaoticHorizons5 жыл бұрын
Great question, I don't have a great answer but struggle to recall any occurence beyond 3 simulatenously. Storm chasers and scientists count tornadoes differently often... most scientists would conclude that 1 mesocyclone or rotating updraft can only produce 1 tornado at a time... even wording it as a multiple vortex mesocyclone when multiple funnels protrude from the same updraft/mesocyclone. With that in mind a storm needs mulitple mesocyclones to officially be counted as multiple ongoing tornadoes, which the Dodge City storm did accomplish with atleast 2 ongoing simultaneously from 2 different updrafts. An incredible storm to say the least!

@@ChaoticHorizons to cut tow bills by 98 percent these 3 things first thing " Detroit Tru Trac " this minute long video is something you can relate to , As could anyone who pulls to the side of the road when it is raining " kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWHQlqF8otaKoNk ," The results in this video would be the same 2 or four wheel drive " number 2 a genuine mud tire ," they are dirt cheap on craigslist. " I just checked 3 is basic skills like airing down . When in sloppy or greasy conditions let around a quarter to half the air out of your tires , " don't do this with a truck with duals " air down until the tires are bulging real good . C clamps or locking plyers put bottle caps over the jaws of the plyers the Tire with the least amount of traction will spin . So put bottle caps over the plyer jaws and clamp the break line on the tire with traction . When you then apply the break , the tire which is spinning gets all the breaking power and the tire with traction then spins . Careful " make sure your car doesn't have computer controlled breaks " I am pretty certain the big radar truck has a no spin diff . But video of it sliding around is to short . I love mud . I am 48 years old and I still love mud
