On Sunday, 29th August, 2010 Class A1 60163 Tornado leaves Ropley station on the Mid Hants Railway (Watercress Line). Nice bit of wheelslip!

And that is a good example of how common sense and intuition are no good for solving physics problems. You expect traction to depend on area of contact, but in fact it doesn't, only normal force and coefficient of friction matter here.

@jannadrielcervo77533 жыл бұрын
Yes, locomotive trains may weigh a lot. But with smooth rails gives it a lot of benefit, and reduces the overall friction. Although the amount of traction grip is also reduced, but it is balanced by a lesser amount of rolling resistance. Thus the amount of energy needed to move from a standstill, isn't that a lot. Compared to an 18 wheeler (or more wheels) road train like those in Australia. Having rubber wheels that deforms due to the rough surface of the road, it has lots of rolling resistance. But at the same time gives it more traction and grip. Thus the needed amount of torque and energy to move from a standstill is a lot more. What many people don't realize is that trains are a lot more efficient.

It takes practice. Go easy on the throttle and reduce the throttle before you close the cylinder cocks. When you close the cylinder cocks the steam chest pressure rises quickly and can cause wheelslip.

Wheelslip is usually caused by the driver opening the regulator too quickly or, sometimes, by faulty sanding gear. The driver should allow for wet track. Although it's unlikely to damage the locomotive, it causes railburn or local hardening of the rails which may fracture later. Any driver worth his salt will wince if he sees it. A way of starting a particularly heavy train is to back up first to close up the slack in all the couplings and then pull away. That way, the first carriages help get the others rolling.
@DanielTejnicky Жыл бұрын
That's how freight trains are getting to move, rarely ever seen that with passenger trains tho
@kc54026 ай бұрын
Yuk! Your 'backing up' technique is horrible. Not only does it put enormous stress on the couplings by suddenly jerking them into tension when the train moves forward, but it will also give the passengers an extremely uncomfortable, jerky start to their journey. It's better to employ a loco which is powerful enough to do the job properly and smoothly.

Considering the steam coming from the safety valves and the high pitched injector like sound - i think the fireman has the boiler perfectly primed ie the pressure at almost blow-off and is now keeping the pressure under control by simply feeding water. But high boiler pressure - the engine is now very hard preventing from slipping... but the driver handled it well.

Why is Tornado in LNER green and sporting a tender that says British Railways? Tornado was built well after the demise of LMS/LNER/GWR/SR and BR.
@Stevedd333 жыл бұрын

Can someone explain me why does it happens and is it dangerous?
@marcogentile3392 Жыл бұрын
I'm not entirely sure on how it works but basically it happens when the driver applies too much power so the wheeles lose grip and start spinning freely. It's not that dangerous but it can cause some damage to the rails and you really don't want this to happen when climbing a hill in a train.
@saiah_yt7956 ай бұрын
Wheelslip occurs when an engine either does not have enough power to pull its load or too much power is applied and it loses friction. When this happens, the engine freely pumps its pistons until either it regains traction, or the engineer lowers throttle and it slows down to regain that traction and then it continues on its merry. Now as to if its dangerous, its only harmful to the track and the engines wheels causing serious damage if prolonged. But yeah, thats about it on wheelslip.
