You have a beautiful home but you really need to install a tornado shelter to protect your family. If the house gets blown apart, being in the closet won't help no matter how many pillows you pile on.

Yes, you are correct for the most part but sometimes it does really help. Many people have survived in closets and bathrooms in the middle of the house but the basement or storm shelter is the safest.

@Rottle a supercell is a thunderstorm with a persistent rotating updraft (mesocyclone). Supercells usually do NOT produce any tornadoes, but occasionally they do and most are weak F0-F1.

My family and I all have old military steel pots we wear during tornado warnings here in southern Indiana. We even keep them on while in the basement. A good military surplus flak vest is also a great idea too. I have one for myself and we are saving to get everyone one. The neighbors give us weird looks on the way to the basement. But let them laugh. We are serious about our survival.

@@amandaseals7465 man I feel bad for you. When I was at summer camp last summer we have severe weather for a week and we were supposed to go to our daily camp activities they got cancelled because of the weather. Well when I was about to take a shower for that evening my roommate told me to stay in the room even though me and her was watching the sky from the bathroom window (XD). Well me and her ran back to the room to grab our "safety kit" me and her prepared together and right as soon as I was going to do something our camp advisor banged on our door and told us to go to the lower level of the building. So we did that but little did we know THEY PUT EVERYONE by glass windows. Luckily a few days later we learned it was an EF-2 but we made it. (I am in my last year of hs fwi this was when I was a junior) But I feel bad for you. Stay safe

Exactly. My husband and I are looking for a house to buy and I REFUSE to buy one that doesn't have a good basement. We live in Iowa. Tornadoes are no effing joke. We could come across a house that is perfect in every way, within our budget and checks off all the things on our list but if there isn't a basement or it's not a suitable shelter, no deal.

My dad and mom were born and raised in Oklahoma. All the families moved to California when both were in their teens. Mom and Dad married in 1954. Dad was 19, mom was 17. Both sides of the families, (dad's fam & mom's fam) stayed in California for years. Dad went in army then air force. In 1968 mom and dad divorced. In 1970 my dad's parents moved back to Harrah OK. In '71 dad and his new wife followed settling in OK City. My sister, brother and me would go spend every summer with dad in Oklahoma. Those were the best times of my childhood and teen years. My favorite times were the storms. I was never afraid of them. Even the time a huge tornado blazed through Oklahoma City, and half of dad's house was taken by the tornado. We were all in the basement, and when we came up, after the radio gave the all clear, we were stunned. Half the house left in perfect condition, I mean not even one picture on the walls were disturbed! The other half, was gone, just gone. It looked like a giant saw cut through the house and that side was just taken away. Except for a couple broken pieces furniture tossed into the backyard, nothing from that side of the house was left. Then we hear the sirens again. The tornado had doubled back and was heading straight back to our area. It made another u-turn and headed north east towards Tulsa. It died just before it reached Tulsa. I loved those summer storms, but never wanted anybody's house or any people harmed. In 1979 I moved to Oklahoma and loved it. I adored the Spring when all the storms would come. I eventually moved back to California got married and had a child. To this day dad still calls me to tell me about the weather and harsh storms. Since I live in Las Vegas and not one thing ever happens here weather wise at all, he helps me live the storms vicariously through him 😁. Dad's 88 now and I worry about him durning tornados. They live too close to Moore OK, as we all know Moore seemed to become a favored path for tornados ☹️. They are exciting, the storms, but it's surreal when you come from your shelter to see half the home completely missing. I don't want to ever experience losing someone due to a tornado. But I will always love the storms.

@@ssatty9889 Thank you, Kaila, that was so sweet of you to update me. I graciously appreciate it. I was greatly concerned for their safety, after seeing online how bad it was. I always think about the precious little ones that are scared out of their wits at a time like that. Tornado season is NOT over yet, so PLEASE remember to hold ALL of these people up in prayer. The power of prayer and saying protection prayers is truly proven to make a difference in everything from growing plants to the recovery difference in surgical patients. Just sending forth that energy of love and protection can and will make a difference in the lives of people. Never think that your prayers are anything but valuable treasures, especially, when they are for others.

I live in South Dakota and everyone up here has basements to keep pipes from freezing during our extremely cold winters, but they also double as tornado shelters for us. I can't believe so many people can choose to live down farther south, especially in Oklahoma, the strong tornado capital of the world without some type of tornado shelter! Our town got hit by a tornado and everybody survived and there was only a couple minor injuries even though half the town was wiped out because every house has a basement. I was so scared when I saw you guys hiding in a closet, I hope since you've gotten an improved shelter haha
