Exactly. My husband and I are looking for a house to buy and I REFUSE to buy one that doesn't have a good basement. We live in Iowa. Tornadoes are no effing joke. We could come across a house that is perfect in every way, within our budget and checks off all the things on our list but if there isn't a basement or it's not a suitable shelter, no deal.

My dad and mom were born and raised in Oklahoma. All the families moved to California when both were in their teens. Mom and Dad married in 1954. Dad was 19, mom was 17. Both sides of the families, (dad's fam & mom's fam) stayed in California for years. Dad went in army then air force. In 1968 mom and dad divorced. In 1970 my dad's parents moved back to Harrah OK. In '71 dad and his new wife followed settling in OK City. My sister, brother and me would go spend every summer with dad in Oklahoma. Those were the best times of my childhood and teen years. My favorite times were the storms. I was never afraid of them. Even the time a huge tornado blazed through Oklahoma City, and half of dad's house was taken by the tornado. We were all in the basement, and when we came up, after the radio gave the all clear, we were stunned. Half the house left in perfect condition, I mean not even one picture on the walls were disturbed! The other half, was gone, just gone. It looked like a giant saw cut through the house and that side was just taken away. Except for a couple broken pieces furniture tossed into the backyard, nothing from that side of the house was left. Then we hear the sirens again. The tornado had doubled back and was heading straight back to our area. It made another u-turn and headed north east towards Tulsa. It died just before it reached Tulsa. I loved those summer storms, but never wanted anybody's house or any people harmed. In 1979 I moved to Oklahoma and loved it. I adored the Spring when all the storms would come. I eventually moved back to California got married and had a child. To this day dad still calls me to tell me about the weather and harsh storms. Since I live in Las Vegas and not one thing ever happens here weather wise at all, he helps me live the storms vicariously through him 😁. Dad's 88 now and I worry about him durning tornados. They live too close to Moore OK, as we all know Moore seemed to become a favored path for tornados ☹️. They are exciting, the storms, but it's surreal when you come from your shelter to see half the home completely missing. I don't want to ever experience losing someone due to a tornado. But I will always love the storms.
