Natural disasters happen everywhere, including tornadoes. A simple storm shelter gets you through. I lived in Oklahoma, the most tornadic state, never been hit directly.

​@HeraclitusThoughtBubbles yeah but I think at least one (maybe both) of his measurements are way off. if that really was a mile-wide tornado, and he really was half a mile away, it would fill up most of the screen and you'd be able to discern more detail of the air currents rapidly twisting about in the core vortex

They have reported now that it was an EF5, winds in excess of 250 mph. My hometown, our family farm is just 6 miles south of Minden.

They're not getting bigger. There are more areas of densely packed communities now. There are tornadoes from the earlier half of the 20th century that have been restudied and classified as F4 and 5 based on extent and type of damage. Tornadoes are a relatively new phenomena in history books because the central USA has one of the highest incidents of tornadoes and it's only been in the last 150 years that this area of the US has seen a noticeable increase in population.

@@EmeraldBayMovies 99.9 percent is towards I was in Moris Illinois on I 80 yard at Costco driving truck never heard the siren with 100 mph plus winds with this tornado it bypassed us luckily but this one was a huge one standing still i thought but as it got closer and closer I sleep with the semi curtains open with the parking lot light my only light my truck started rocking with tires lifting off the ground since I was out of hours getting loaded they let me keep attached to my trailer I was parked between four others I was in the middle the two and the ones not attached to other trucks were knocked over by the tornadic winds where some call the bear cage I seen the twister about 1000 feet away getting closer then it turned left away from my truck then rope out and disappear talk about crapping twinkies I thought I was going to be toast yet the trailers on the end were knocked over the ones in the middle left standing plus I grew up in tornado alley from 1969 till 2001 been in more tornadoes than I have fingers and toes bent in two ef5s and survived both since my house has a basement but since house collapses are about making them useless with the debris surrounding or on you I use drainage ditches with culverts better protection

You are so right. One would have to live through one to know the true terror, to understand it. I NEVER sleep during storms! I watch the radar until they pass. Was in two tornados in my life, one a direct hit, that was enough for me! Lived in tornado Alley, moved out. Will never live there again. I'm too terrified of tornadoes!

I believe this will be considered a EF4. The wind speeds were over 200 mph, it was a very violent tornado, and there was considerable damage. I may be wrong but I also think this tornado continued to travel north to Harlan, IA.
