Excellent to see people not only installing these, but practicing how to use them. Now you just need to be sure that the tracks that the door slides on remain clear and smooth-sliding. You don't want to try to open it when a tornado's approaching and discover that it's jammed by dirt and small debris that's gradually built up.

I love this video ❤ from the wind chimes to the closing of the door. Everything is perfect 🥰

Not sure where you're from, or how much you know about tornados, but unless you're in a direct hit, you aren't in this shelter more than about 30 minutes. If a tree falls on that door, there's a ratchet come-along inside to crank it open. And in this case the house is on the lee side of a tornado's general west to east direction, so debris would very likely go the other way...all things you think about when you have one installed. It's also possible to register shelters with GPS coordinates.

Willie, I work for Ground Zero and I happen to run across this video and wanted to say Thank you! Thank you for listening to the message we try to send to people. We are so happy that you all are running the drills like we try to encourage and for passing the word along.

They are popular, and getting to be quite common in our part of the country. The rollers and tracks on these doors are large enough, it would take a lot of debris to affect them. But regular inspections never hurt on something so important as "the fraidy hole." !!! I've been told, and agree, adults should get in the shelter first and then help children in...unlike our video. Still, it was a fun little photo project to do with the grandkids. Dan

This is the exact same model a family got trapped in. They had it in their garage and that latch locked trapping them in. That's terrifying enough as it is, but it got worse. Flash flood waters began to fill the shelter, also debris from the home also created weight over the door so even if the latch hadn't latched they still would have been stuck. Thankfully a neighbor who survived in his bathtub ran to check the shelter, and he saved them from most likely drying as the shelter filled W/water. No thanks to this model, and definitely do not put in the garage or close to a structure where the debris can trap you in.
@44Merc12 жыл бұрын
MegaPrincessmeg, they cost about $2,500 installed. Reddsmorris1: These are designed for use inside a garage so water is usually not a problem. Ours is in a car-port, and does get some rain blown in occassionally. There is a grade around the door so most rain runs around it, but a stiff wind will blow water in. Again, these are for temporary shelter when a storm is imminent -- usually no more than 30 minutes underground at any one incident.

Hello Dan. I've been reading some of the replies and concerns about debris, time spent in the shelter, etc, but I think you have thought this scenario out very well. Given that tornado warnings are issued and these storms are well tracked, I think the chances for survivaa are good. The only problem may be if you are not in your home at the time of the storm and unable to get to your own shelter. I guess only time will tell.

Im getting one put in my garage tomorrow! I do need to say a few things for some commenters who don't know. The door sluds it does not open outward, it comes not only with a winch but the other side can be unbloted from the inside to creat an alternative opening. There are airvents, the triangle thing is just a handle to get down the stairs (not needed). In case of debris falling on it , it is well ventilated and like I said the door slids and all that jazz. Most citys (like mine) have a shelter registry where you sign up and tell them your address and location of shelter so they will come make sure you are not traped. A shelter isn't made to be a vacation home its a you hear the sirens as nd you get in situation your not in there that long. As soon as a warning is issued put all pets in the shelter (if needed) or people that may take alonger time to get in then if the sirens go off get everyone else in and lock up. A radio is suggested in the shelter so u can know when it's all clear. Liked in OK most my life abd thank God I haven't been In a twister. A shelter here though is a great investment someday may even be a lifesaving one.

i have one suggestion the metal L bracket that holds the door closed could possibly get knocked down into the locked position causing you to be trapped in there i suggest you install a slide lock
@44Merc12 жыл бұрын
No secondary exit. Inside of rolling door, however, has fittings on it to be used with a supplied ratchet "come along" that can be used to crank the door open even if debris is lying on it.
@montgomeryrichard8 жыл бұрын
And the escape hatch/exit for when house/tree falls on it is where? As I note others have pointed out...
@tim.e.l7 жыл бұрын
The door slides underneath another piece of metal to help mitigate this possibility/issue. This design definitely helps for situations like that so the door doesn't have to open up into the debris. You can still be trapped though -- so they make sure to have a very well ventilated area. I personally would want multiple vents just in case one was clogged or something. Additionally, a lot of places you can register the location of your shelter. This way they can make sure you aren't trapped if something does happen.

Thanks for the note. Tornado damage occurs within about 30 minutes of when sirens blow (typically) and if you're in strike zone things are all quiet again within minutes. Not really a need for food and water. Inside is a cable hoist "come along" designed to ratchet the door back if there is debris. Yes, there is a flashlight in the shelter. Most people carry cell phones with them.

I was born and raised in tornado alley in Okla. I was fortunate to have parents and teachers that taught me about clouds, wind, hail, and everything that comes with storms. Not ever did I ever hear of anyone dying in a storm shelter. You don't wait till a storm is there before you go in a shelter. A shelter is not meant to live in, just spend a few hours there. A pot to pee in, water to drink, a flash light, and maybe a pillow and blanket. Oh, and a portable radio to listen to the weather man

I agree. Storm shelters of some sort should be required of all types of housing, especially in tornado prone areas. The difficult thing is that due to climate change, tornados are appearing in places that never had them before, like New York City. Still, there must be a way to protect as many people as possible.

Practicing the procedure with kids is essential. You would want to be able to tell them a tornado is coming or hear the sirens and know what to do in case something happened to you or whatever the case may be. When I was young my parents practiced fire drills with us. They wanted us to know all the possible ways to get out of the house safely. We also learned how to feel for heat before opening doors, stay low, use a towel as a mask, practice all routes we can and discuss the other routes that may hurt a little but are worth it if you have to, meeting place outside the house, etc etc etc. You want the kids to know exactly what to do and how to do it in case of an emergency. You might not have time to explain things -- especially in the case of a fire while you are sleeping (what if your parents can't get to you) -- you need to know what to do. I think the same holds true for most emergency situations.
