Tornado Sidewinder - Pleasantville, Iowa 4/4/2023

Tornado between Pleasantville and Knoxville, Iowa. With chances for tornadoes dwindling along the warm front in eastern Iowa, something about the southern most cell in a line of storms along the cold front catches my attention. Leaving Newton, I race down ahead of the line that is moving NE at 60 mph. In the nick of time, I catch a blossoming mesocyclone and eventual photogenic EF-1 tornado near Knoxville, IA. 4/4/2023

This cell started to hint at something around 5:30 when I was in Newton, and I was lucky to beat it down there. It was hustling NE.

Nice capture man. The beginning time lapse was a little long (I would have doubled or done one-and-a-half more the speed maybe and cut it a little earlier) and contrast on the clouds and saturation was a little meh - but the actual tornado video was great. Proof that you don't always need to be close to get great shots, especially on LP supercells! What are you using for a videocamera? I suspect that maybe your culprit for the video contrast/color issues in the first part. Either that or setting needed to be modified either on camera or in editing perhaps. Either way, great captures! I was favoring staying a little closer to home and hoping that the warm front might push north more and had a great vantage point on the cell just NE of Des Moines but it didn't of course. Ended up chasing after that cell and having a questionable rotating wall cloud go right over my head before it weakened going further away from the warm front near Searless. Jonathan Yuhas had a grab from SW of me that he said was a tornado from there but I don't think so. I had a good view on it there. My only thought was maybe he was observing to the north of himself because for a while there was kind of a handoff while the new wall cloud formed. It would have been possible that might have had one in there where it was too dark to see anything from my view. TMI anyway. haha. Thanks for sharing!

I was questioning the length in the beginning too. Did you notice the wall cloud and funnel on the horizon? Shot on iPhone 13 Pro dash mounted. The contrast on the storm was pretty true to life, I personally liked the subtlety. The front definitely stalled, kind of unusual for Iowa in my opinion. Thanks for the feedback and for watching.

@@clarencewlsmith I did notice the wall cloud and lowering there. I almost thought you were going to get a tornado directly over the road on the time lapse. That would have been incredible. I will say the contrast in real life was kind of meh so I believe you on that. I do wish that front would have moved just north of I-80 though. I like the road network there much better ... at least for a ways!
