Good stuff. I was on the Tornado when it was the GR1 in the 1980s based in Norfolk and West Germany. Took it across the pond to US and Canada. Flew it for seven years/1200 hours. Known as The Fin, The Tonka or The Norfolk Land Shark. Happy days.

Our most iconic "fighter bomber" is probably the Mosquito. But yeah, the Tornado is awesome! I really miss seeing them flying around. I mostly see F-15's from Lakenheath now, some Typhoons and the odd F-35 up high. The Tornados were different, they'd regularly fly over nice and low, it was a sight to behold.

0:10 - German here. Germany did (and [by 2024] still does) fly the Tornado and this pronunciation with an ah-sound is how it's pronounced in German. We have the same word with the same meaning but this slightly different pronunciation. Maybe that's the answer to the riddle? 🤷♂

at least the GR4 pilots are honest with themselves that they fly a bomber. the USAF F-16's and Navy/Marine F/A-18's are bombers with a hint of fighter. what percentage of actual combat missions were flown as CAP? 1%? less? who drops bombs? bombers.
