Hey Guthrie fam! Meteorologist Andy here from Ryan Hall, Y'all :) Incredible footage of the second tornado from the supercell that led to a tornado emergency being issued just north of Deatsville, AL. Your property was hit by the rear-flank downdraft (RFD) to the south of the tornado, which is a component of forming and sustaining a tornado. The RFD originates from a part of the storm's main updraft that becomes rain-cooled and heavy, then accelerates downward and outward, eventually being pulled into the storm's own low pressure center (tornado). An RFD can pack a serious punch, often 100+ mph winds! If I'm not wrong, I think you may have gone through a similar situation just over a week ago on January 3rd. There was another weak tornado just north of Deatsville. I hope yall can catch a break from severe weather soon! Glad to see that you were lucky with the path of that damaging tornado on Thursday.

Thank you so much for explaining how that works. I was trying to figure that out and research it, but could never really put it together. And yes, a little community here has been hit pretty hard the past couple of weeks. Fortunately, the most recent one was about 3 miles north of us and the one last week was about 3 miles south of us. We’ve been very fortunate at my house, not to get a direct impact. Thanks again

What people need to understand is that tornadoes don't always look like "Wizard of Oz" or "Twister" perfect spiralling cones. Often they look like just low clouds that are rotating - especially in this circumstance, where it's a ways off and you CAN'T see the ground. Tornadoes come in all shapes and sizes.
@Canuckgirl152 Жыл бұрын
Not true , low clouds that are rotating often forms a microbursts not always tornadoes, There was no tornado in this video . but I did see a family that would of been dead if it was a real tornado. running in and out of the house standing in front of glass windows , not going to a safe place until it past . Hope someone teaches them the proper way to be safe !

@@Canuckgirl152 I live in the region of the US this tornado event occurred and I can assure you that was a tornado. That type of storm doesn't quite operate the same in the southern US as it does on the Plains of Kansas and the central US. TOrnadoes here look weird and sometimes consist of multiple funnels orbiting a common center. Often times they are rain wrapped so invisible.
@ForsakenAgony Жыл бұрын
@miss p I don't know if that was a tornado or not. I was in the same storm as them and we had the exact same thing happen to us and there wasn't any tornado that hit us. That storm produced very high winds that made it seem like there would be a tornado. I live in a subdivision and a few houses down where I was with not the greatest view seems like it got hit by tornado because of how crazy the wind was. But, later found out it wasn't a tornado. But, saying all of this, you can never be too sure about regular high winds and tornados sometimes.. I would still take shelter if you're having weather like this.

We send the girls and kids to the basement and a couple of guys will watch to see what it's doing. I knew Mary Ann Gerlach who was carried more than four miles on the storm surge of Camille in Pass Christian Mississippi . The wind in Camille broke the gauge at 234 mph at Gulfport . People who survived Camille reported they could still hear the tornadoes roaring by during the hurricane . I've heard tornadoes near me here in North Carolina over the years . They really do sound like trains roaring . I've been through many hurricanes but I'm always more uneasy when we have tornado weather . They strike with little or no warning .
@tabortoothtiger7580 Жыл бұрын
@@MehIgotnothing See, I'm the opposite. I'm from Kansas. I've seen tornadoes. They're pretty easy to deal with as long as you're smart and have the proper safety measures. I'd rather a day of possible tornadoes over a huge rainstorm that could blow my house away for hours and has many little tornadoes inside of it that could cause damage for literal days. So yeah, I'd rather live in my tornado prone area over the coast where hurricanes happen every year. Hell, some years we don't really get anything, so it's not a given. The only scary part about it, is that tornadoes can be really random, and you're not given a several day head start to know they'll hit. But that can be fixed by simply being weather aware and not being an idiot and getting into shelter rather than going out and risking yours and other's lives. So many apps and ways to know if a storm is coming and a warning to prepare. Also if you live in these storm prone areas, you should really just invest in making a plan for the possibilities. So it's basically similar to your hurricanes, just it's less likely to happen and it's more random. You just learn to deal with it all. Make a plan, have things stored away in a safe place, know where you're going to shelter, and listen to the professionals or people who know what they're talking about.

The EF4/5 tornado 4/27/11 came within .09 of a mile from my home...my Aunt's house was moderately damaged & beyond it was nothing but death & destruction. We were without power for 4 days. Most of those in Pleasant Grove had handed their homes from generation to generation meaning they didn't have homeowner insurance. Most were never rebuilt. Things forever changed. Inside our car in our basement with the airbags set to deploy. We listened to the weather simulcast on the car radio & the sound was like hearing road equipment used to break up concrete and asphalt prior to paving projects. I could feel the vibration of it in the steering wheel. As quick as it got there it was gone. It took hours for my mom sister and her boyfriend to reach my aunt's house. I stayed to guard ours. Hope never to get that close to one again. That particular storm tracked from Tuscaloosa through Birmingham and periodically lift & descend according to reports it tracked into the Carolinas before fading.

And my home and acreage borders a Minnesota State Park, where hundreds of summer visitors come to camp and stay for extended visits. No cell service, or barely detectable signals. What that was once the tornado passed with all the heavy rain is called RFD, or the rear flanking downdraft. It can be just as dangerous as a tornado in some aspects because it can be unexpected. You think it's over then bam it hits and with the added heavy rain it can cause major flash flooding. The turquoise color in the clouds you saw as the tornado was approaching was a very well defined hail core, some of the prettiest I've seen on video. That storm definitely had some updraft to it for sure.

Of course, all tornadoes are not the same, but having been through two, I can tell You some signs that one may be coming your way. Your animals know it and show it, and sense it before we do. The birds stop chirping outside, and none are flying. Its an eerie silence. All animals, outside disappear. There is a calm before the storm. Those blue skies and weather are perfect, then a minute later youre in the middle of it. You can feel a huge air pressure drop, and winds moving opposite directions at the same time. Your ears might pop. YOu can hear transformers exploding. Your roof may start to howl because the winds are trying to lift the top off. When the clouds look 500 feet off the ground, but extend to about 30,00 feet high. ( and ugly ) Hail is a good indication too, in the summer. . Dont waste time looking for shelter. It is terrifying and extremely powerful. When You walk outside, 5 minutes after, it is like a movie in a warzone. In our area, we know that tornadoes travel from the southwest. The last 3 have followed a similar line for about 20 miles. Though unpredictable, there are many signs that it is coming. Just know what to look for, and heed the warnings. It sounds like 2 freight trains crashing in your living room. There are so many things being destroyed, outside, that it all becomes one big constant noise. Prepare your home, and avoid them at all costs.

Hello from San Antonio Texas! Glad your family is safe & went to the basement when hail & wind really picked up on you at 5:50 minutes. Smart to track a dangerous storm like this! This one was an eF3 rain wrapped tornado. Saw it in the news. I love extreme weather; Been months since my area has had a real rainstorm or greater. LOVING the sound of this storm. You can HEAR that monster behind those trees!! Major clue to this being a tornado plus how fast those clouds were moving. This is one of mother nature's ultimate weapons when she's angry! Cheers:) btw amazing footage!

I'm sure the experience was terrifying for all but I’m also sure that the calmness that your wife and you maintained through the video, made the event not so bad for the children. It was very motivating to watch this. Lastly, I would love to know what camera you used in this video, it's undoubtedly the best autofocus I've seen in any extreme video on the platform. @@beccagee5905 No. I heard it coming. My ex-boyfriend lives on the river. I was there because my yard had been hit that morning and I had no power, etc. Anyway, I heard the thing coming and started screaming for everyone to get in the basement. It missed the house we were in and hit across the water from us. I'll never forget. I thought we were going to die. The whole house was shaking and the noise was deafening. Quite a few people died that day. I believe three across the river from us. I've been in several tornados and if I never see another it will be a day too soon.

@@andrewfosbinder2826 I live in Marinette County! I remember the EF-1 that same year that hit Wausaukee and killed the man in his mobile home. On June 15th of 2022, we had a EF-1 touch down just 6 miles to my north, and it ended just east of Wausaukee. You can see areas where you would have swaths of trees mowed down. I remember the Great Blowdown of Northern Wisconsin on July 19, 2019. It luckily had 70 mph winds by the time it reached me. Still lost a Red Pine to it though.

@@weathermanofthenorth1547 I had an EF 1 go right over my house at night in Oklahoma. Scariest thing ever. I got an alert on my phone, turned on the weather, saw my street name as the location of the tornado sighting, and the power went out! I was in a cement block house, no interior rooms, and no rooms without windows. I ran to the bathroom that had a tiny window, crouched down into the shower, and pulled the shower curtain closed. When I went outside one of my huge trees was on the neighbors house, and the other had three fourths ripped out. The entire town had trees down, and it took a month to cut them all up, and haul them away. It took between three days to a little over a week for the town to get back power.
@weathermanofthenorth1547 Жыл бұрын
@@beccagee5905 Here in Wisconsin, when the derecho hit on July 19, 2019, you had people who had no power for up to 3 weeks, and some who were trapped in their homes for up to a month. In the following winter, many snowmobile trails were closed, because of the amount of trees that were destroyed. And none were good for paper, as the fibers were twisted or snapped.
@beccagee5905 Жыл бұрын
@@weathermanofthenorth1547 Yeah, I spent one winter until Feb 1979 in Wisconsin. As soon as the roads were clear from the blizzard, we left the state lol. The snowplow cleared one lane of the SR in front of the house, and the side it was plowed to, the snow was almost to the power lines. We had chunks of ice falling from under the car when we crossed the Florida line.

I like the scenery there at your place it reminds me of one of our places we have here in Southern WV and I I'm glad you all are okay but honestly I would have done the same thing as far as trying to keep an eye on it, even through a window 😂 the one interesting part of this storm, is to show people that steeper and higher hill areas, can absolutely have tornadoes because there is so many people across the country, that thinks mountainous areas cannot have tornadoes and that's absolutely not true because I've always known they can
