Tornado

This is an American toy, made in the 1980s. Parts of the US get tornadoes or twisters on a scale that we do not see in Europe, and these sometimes appear in fiction (The Wizard of Oz for instance begins with a tornado) and also in toys, such as this one. Fill the top container with water plus a little bit of soap (which makes the tornado more visible) and switch it on. A little spinner at the bottom of the container rotates, and as the speed of the spinning water increases, a tornado style shape appears in the water.
You can adjust the speed the water spins, and create a larger or smaller tornado.

This would be good with a physical farm scene in it. A metal frame for the house with rubber planks covering it - fixed in such a way that they would flap in the tornado's gusts. Perhaps some cows with enough air in their backs that they might land upright everytime the storm calms. It would be a thing of beauty.

I have never seen an electric one before. When I was a kid we used to make them out of plastic bottles with little connectors. You would shake it around and as the top bottle drained into the bottom bottle it would form a small tornado/whirlpool.

I had something like this, but it didn't have a motor and it had a cover at the top. All you had to do is stir the bottle thing round very quickly and you'd get a really nice looking twister!

I think the soap actually helps the effect by being less dense and thus being forced to the middle by the centrifuging.

Pretty much every third grade teacher in my school had a manual one of these (basically just a plastic cylinder with water and glitter inside) that you'd have to swish around yourself to get the tornado to go. I was never able to get it to touch down.
