Trains at: Shrewsbury, 28/05/22

An excellent afternoon session spent at Shrewsbury Railway Station where we see plenty of services from Transport For Wales, West Midlands Railway and freight from Colas Rail.
This was my first ever visit to this station and I can safely say it won't be the last, it is a beautiful station situated in a lovely area of the country.
Shrewsbury station was opened in 1848 for what was the Shrewsbury to Chester line, the station was designed to mirror that of the Tudor buildings of the surrounding area. Inspiration came from the old school which is now the public library. One of the many charms of this station is that is sits over the River Severn. When it was opened it was first served by Great Western Railway and London Northwestern Railway.
Great Western Railway would serve the station up until 1967 (latterly BR Western Region) when they were running when it was running services from London Paddington to Birkenhead Woodside Railway Station.
Since the 1960's the station has been listed as Grade II which means no work can be done to the station unless its maintenance.

The Station may be worth a "rush-hour" film for a little more variety as Avanti West Coast send their 221s up there in the peaks, though even then as you say an hour roughly covers everything!

Nice to see Shrewsbury on your channel. In terms of lines, its the terminus of the Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury and Shrewsbury to Chester lines, and it's also on the Welsh Marches Line.

the transport for wales train at 6:28 going to Crewe, the station announcer said , Chester and Crewe. impossible i say. it's either crewe or up the Gobowen line to Chester surely

shrewsbury to crewe mainline was closed so west wales to manchester was diverted up to wrexham, chester and back into crewe on the chester to crewe line before going back to west wales

The Cambrian Line is to Shrewsbury but most services are extended to Birmingham via the Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton Line and a section of the West Coast Main Line.

No Avanti West Coast? Hmm! That will have to be a station for Tornado to come back to now just to see services from them too! 😂 The working with the 70's was a bonus though! Yes Colas 70's with DB red wagons included as well! My assumption is that with it having been an engineers train, the DB red wagons could end up with any locomotive from any freight operating company.

When it comes to engineers trains they always have a mixed bag of wagons from different operators, very rarely will you find one with a solid consist from one operator

I live Shrewsbury locally. At the station good few times each month and love it. Only seen one Avanti train once and mainly in the morning. Depends on timetable. I once saw a TFW HST which I was baffled but it’s a lovely station

No such thing as a TfW HST. They do operate Class 67-hauled Mark 4 sets though, so probably one of those.

TfW do have a few *150s* that were ex-Anglia a *long* time ago like 2005 that ATW had acquired, and a few *153s* that came from Greater Anglia more recently around 2019/2020, but as Siôn said, it wouldn't have been the 158s. The 24 "158818-158841" 158s are ex-Arriva Trains Wales, Wales & Borders Trains and Wales & West, so going back to long before Greater Anglia even existed. Before 2007 and Machynlleth depot and the full acquisition of the 175s, it was 40 158s (158815-158854) and I think some of those were ex-Central Trains (the operator that ran on the Cambrian Line before October 2001) but the ones that left went to Northern and EMT.

TfW don't have 3 car 158's only ever in pairs of 2's

It would make sense for them to run 3 car trains just to bolster the capacity of their services

@@Tornado922 they can only do that on the "conventionally signalled" part of the network though, as the Cambrian (Shrewsbury to Machynlleth/Dovey Junction and Aberystwyth and Pwllheli) line has ERTMS/ETCS signalling and can only take 158818-158841 (to be replaced by 20 of the 2-car 197s) in terms of units, plus the Class 97 locos (or a 37 if on the back of a 97).
