Brian's Lawn Maintenance

Күн бұрын

Today we're using the Toro MultiForce Dethatcher setup on my moms property to dethatch and power rake her lawn. This attachment and accessory is brand new to us and by the looks of it, Toro is really on to something.
We were able to dethatch the lawn in under a half hour and pull up a good bag full of grass/thatch layer. The Toro dethatcher and powered bagger are a powerful duo for sure, and I can really see this setup making us a chunk each and every spring.
Do you guys offer dethatching service for your clients, or is it part of your spring cleanup? Love to hear what you guys are charging per 1k/sqft! We have 2 more jobs on the books today, that vlog will come out this week as well!

This was the first attempt at us doing a dethatch with the new setup, and surprisingly went really well. If you guys saw on Instagram stories real time on Friday, we knocked out two more dethatching's back to back and they went great as well. What are you guys getting now days for a dethatching? Do you guys price it per 1k/sqft? Love to hear what you guys are doing!

Our spring cleanups are mainly all dethatchings. We price base on time some lawns get more thatch than others. When you pick up the dethatcher if you back up a little bit before picking it up it wont throw those chunks onto the sidewalk and is easier on the tines.

I've been asked one single time to dethatch a yard in the past 18 years. I live in Florida so mostly it's St. Augustine. I actually bought a small walk behind Sunjoe electric dethatcher to make my first attempt. My customer knows it's my first attempt. I also just scaled his yard two weeks ago for spring. I've never done that before either. 18 years I've been doing this.

Get quite a bit of dethatching up in Minnesota after all the snow kills some grass in the winter. Got a similar setup to yours with the front dethatcher and a powerflow bagger, very streamlined, best way to go that I can tell, at least at a cost effective price.

Hello Brian, we are a small new company (wife and I) mostly doing spring/fall cleanups, garden demolition, design, installation and some mulching but no hardscape or lawn cutting as of yet. Fall leaf cleanup is in demand here and I am wondering what kind of set-up you'd recommend to make fall clean ups more efficient. Currently we only have a F150 we use to haul equipment and debri but am considering getting a trailer and a multiforce. Will the multiforce pull a small leaf vacuum?

Great video Brian, we offer dethatching separate from spring cleanups. The thing I like about the Toro grandstand multi-force is you don’t have to get off the machine to pull the dethatcher up off the ground, it’s just a push of a button. And that you can bag and dethatch at the same time saves a lot of time and money.

That's a very nice setup on the Toro. I use a manual 60" dethatcher on my Lazer Z. I just include it in most of my cleanups. It's a good up sell that is justifiable. Customers always love how their lawn looks when done.

I dethatch all my accounts that are irrigated and fertilized. We get a lot of snow up north (about 4.5 hrs north of you) and the grass just gets so matted down from snow loads all winter. It really helps loosen up the lawn and gives it a bit of a kick start to wake up for the season. It also helps to cleanup any remaining leaves that are stuck to the ground from fall.

@@KevinBakin47 so far it looks like it will be a much earlier start than last year. Mowing season didn’t get going until the last week of May in 2020 due to all the below average temps. This year we are above average and I’m struggling to get all my dethatching done before the grass gets tall.

As someone who just rented a tow behind dethatcher and had to come back and clean it all up by hand afterwards, this looks awesome. I raked the front by hand and got smart on the backyard and used the zero turn with the deck at 4.5” with the pto on to make a manageable pile in the back. Live and learn.

We don’t do dethatching around here I don’t offer that as a service in my experience it removes more good grass than bad. You also have to haul all that crap away too! About the only grass I know of that could use that is zoysia grass and we don’t have any hardly full lawns of it here in Missouri. My lawn company we do aerations and slice seedings. I don’t mow lawns either just do lawn applications and trees. If I was going to do it that would be the setup to use beats raking everything up after you use the walk behind dethatcher.

So I always try to sell it as an extra on top of the spring cleanup, BUT, alot of the time, I'll do one pass with it whether their paying for it or not. The reason why is because it loosens up all of the leaves and little sticks and saves alot of blowing time. Makes it easy to just quickly blow the debris into a pile and collect.

My wife and i offer dethatching as its own service. Not included with clean ups. We do some in the fall and some in spring. Honestly in all the years i have been doing it it doesn't seem to make a difference whether it is done in the spring or fall. The only issue in spring is sometimes it takes a lawn longer to dry out for it. We do however try and avoid doing them on the same lawns every single year. Most lawns don't need it done that much if they are being properly maintained and it can actually do more harm than good if done to often.

I have a lot of people calling ,"asking for bag up the grass clippings" thinking they will be able to pull one over on me. They think if they just pay for a one time clipping charge that will pull the thatch up along with the new clippings. Then they get pissed off when it doesn't work. When they should have just asked for what they really needed in the first place. I can always tell when it is going to be a case like that. And it happens with leaves also, when I get there on a leaf job and it looks like 3 to 4 years of build up woven in the grass and and they get butt hurt when I tell them they need dethatch instead of leaf clean up (raking).

They’re back logged bud. You and everyone else is waiting for the same bagger. We were ahead in the queue, and regardless of whether we paid for it or not, it doesn’t change the fact. Sorry for your frustration but at the same time you’re not the only one out there waiting on something in this current economy.

@@BriansLawnMaintenance Great video Brian. Yes, that is a JRCO dethatcher that works with the multi force. JRCO aerator and leaf plow also are designed to work with it.

Fall? There’s no thatch in the fall in NY... you can see the thatch in the spring and that matted down look from snow.

Well the yard looks terrible because you mowed while it was wet . Really bad tire marks and ruts on the grass .

Well on the front left section, but that is because of bad drainage. Fun project to install a french drain this year!

Did not seem to be pulling up much dead grass and when you showed the bagger it was mostly green when it should have been a majority of dead grass. Don’t see that as much difference with the cheep drag behind, it’s definitely not as good as a power rake or slitter. Check out some videos on the Bluebird Dethatcher and you will see a huge difference, this is just a toy in comparison.

Dethatch is so outdated and bad for the environment. It's like taking food away from the lawn. Thatch is good for the ground and keep the grass from burning up.

Leaving a healthy layer of thatch is good for the lawn, but our lawns are extremely matted in the subdivisions we work in, and dethatching works wonders for them.
