They may be under a lot of external pressure but you can't get to this level without a lot of motivation and self decipline. I think some them are just shy and don't like to show emotions in a foreign training hall and especially in front of a camera. Athletes like Lu Xiaojun have talked about how much they truly love the sport, and how they enjoy looking incredibly muscular. I don't think Chinese training is as torturous as you think it is, and the mental health of these athletes are well taken care of.
