Toronto in the 60's was the Bohemina Capital of Canada where the flower children of that day hung out in coffee bars and clubs. Many of todays Seasoned Youth fondly remember that time.

2024: I started going to Yorkville in 1964 when I was 16. Loved the Ugly Ducklings. I guess most of us are gone now - I'm glad there is this video for a permanent record. Peace and Love ☮☯

I was born at the old Mt. Sinai hospital, the building in the backdrop of the opening. It was an old age home for years before becoming home to a high-end perfumery. I had my tonsils out there when I was five, I always remembered the wrought iron work on the etairs, funny the things you remember.

Bill, thank you, this brings back the memories of my early adulthood as well. Some places that I had forgotten but remember fondly. It was an exciting time for me.

Photos of Yorkville in the 60's are always welcome, especially with 60’s music. It would be good to see then/now photos of the identifiable locations. Some buildings are still recognizable. Others have disappeared. Of course, what can we expect after 50 years?

The guy sniffing the white flower at 33 seconds in is none other than David Depoe, a member of 'The Company of Young Canadians' and the de facto 'Mayor' of Yorkville. Depoe, son of a CBC broadcaster, had trained in the Maritimes for the CYC and was installed in Yorkville where he was to activate the disenfranchised for social voice and change. What followed was the Yorkville 'riots' of 1967 (really more of a sit down strike ending in a series of arrests, ie: there was to my knowledge little to no property damage) as 'hippies' and friends occupied the streets. The aim was - of all radical things - to close the small two or three block area to car traffic. But the TO city big wigs would have none of it. That's commissioner Lamport(e?) in the background. All of this was fortuitously filmed by two NFB crews - resulting in Robin Spry's documentary 'Flowers on a One Way Street' - which I believe was broadcast on TV at the time and Mort Ransen's meta-documentary 'Christopher's Movie Matinee'; the latter was shut down midway though production because the Globe and Mail implied the film crew was part of the agitation...the NFB panicked and recalled Ransen to Montreal where he cut the footage he had into a free form account of 1960s youth and the moment where the film was axed. And for those who don't know, the CYC was a program created by the Pearson government - a kind of domestic CUSO - where young people - some just out of high school - were sent around the country to foment Saul Alinsky style community advocacy in poor or socially/racially marginalized communities.
